Another storm and there is an Amber warning at the moment for Northern Ireland but I think there should be one for Cumbria/Lancashire as well, looking at the wind charts for tomorrow.

What is the defining point of bad weather being named a storm? Eunice was named very early on (4 days ahead maybe?) and Franklin just the day before. Does it have a certain feature or is it just the forecasted severity of the weather?

GFS model (run Tue 22 Feb 18:00Z) seems to be keen on Snow for Thursday (24th Feb 2022) in a lot of the UK. Other models, such as ICON, seem to me to be suggesting rain.
Have gone back through a couple of GFS model runs and they seem consistent in Snow. So what do you reckon... might there be a snow band that comes through most of the UK, dumping white stuff all over the place, or maybe it would be high ground only?

RampantIvy · 22/02/2022 22:06

I have just driven back from a friend's house and the council have heavily gritted all the roads (South Yorkshire).

@CaveMum

Er, Gladys looks like a big girl Confused
WTAF! Please, no more.

Side note - someone needs to up their game re naming the storms. They’re all fairly nice names. They need to sound more menacing (or, in my case, more sweary).

dementedma · 23/02/2022 13:23

Weather is dreadful here in Dundee today. Strong winds and lashing rain

Perihelion · 23/02/2022 14:10

There's a snow and lighting weather warning for Scotland for later today...not seen that combination before in a warning.. and another wind warning for the East coast

LilyGlobe · 23/02/2022 17:19

BBC is forecasting snow for the south coast tomorrow, metoffice isn’t. Which do I believe? I’m travelling quite a distance tomorrow and if it’s going to snow, then I’d rather rearrange!

CaveMum · 23/02/2022 18:29

Try www.netweather.tv/ @LilyGlobe and then go with the majority verdict!

Hope you don’t have to change your plans.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 23/02/2022 18:34

Crazy, squally wind and rain here now on the NE coast of England. Never. Bloody. Ending.

HighlandCowbag · 23/02/2022 21:30

Been a gorgeous morning here in south yorkshire! Bright blue skies, a slight breeze and fairly mild. Dropped a bit now temperature wise and wind a bit blustery. Dh got to go sheffield to Manchester in the morning,he looked a bit bewildered when I said to take the pick up rather than the car cos snow forecast but woodhead and the m62 both high up....

RampantIvy · 23/02/2022 21:53

I'm on the edge of the Pennines in South Yorkshire, and we had gritters out last night. No idea why because it wasn't forecast to freeze.

Had a lovely afternoon walk in the sun today.

nannynick · 23/02/2022 22:32

@HighlandCowbag BBC Weather is showing 10am heavy snow for Manchester. Yet I expect other weather services may be showing rain. Being prepared for all sorts of weather tomorrow is probably wise.

Are any of the models showing snow anywhere other than Scottish Highlands, other than GFS which is keen for there to be snow all over the place? Is it really hard for the models to predict snow, thus why GFS shows it but others do not?

RampantIvy · 23/02/2022 22:37

We have heavy snow forecast for tomorrow, but it won't stay for long.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 24/02/2022 19:55

Right, so this isn't funny any more. We have a forecast currently of a 'fresh breeze' which seems to have been a default forecast for the last two months now. The wind is absolutely howling down my chimney, my conservatory roof sounds like it's lifting off, and bins are blowing over.

I went out in it today. It didn't settle but it was utterly perishing despite me thinking I was dressed appropriately.

Its miserable!

nannynick · 24/02/2022 21:12

I'm in West Surrey and we had a little flurry of snow at about 1:30pm. Very brief.
We have had snow in March in the past, so still time yet for some white stuff.

HighlandCowbag · 24/02/2022 21:59

It's definitely been a vile day. Have been stuck at the farm 12 hours with a poorly pony. We had a massive snow storm, hail, winds, thunder, sunshine all in the space of an hour.

RampantIvy · 25/02/2022 07:34

Yesterday's weather wasn't too bad in the end.
