Another storm and there is an Amber warning at the moment for Northern Ireland but I think there should be one for Cumbria/Lancashire as well, looking at the wind charts for tomorrow.

Awful here in South Yorkshire as well.

Summersdreaming · 21/02/2022 07:09

Just checking Facebook, M60 shut due to overturned lorry, looks like all trains cancelled, trees blocking multiple A roads, flooding, and only a yellow warning?

HarreePotter · 21/02/2022 07:13

@Summersdreaming it's disgusting isn't it how different the reporting is today versus Friday. North south divide is very much alive. It's worse here today than it was on Friday and it's just a yellow warning..

Ecosralayce · 21/02/2022 07:19

really bad still her in S Yorks. Lots of flood warnings still in place. the river Don has breached at multiple locaitons. meadowhall was shut off last night. lots of road closures still in place. and terrible winds bringing more chaos. Thankfully one rout our of our village is still passable so can try to make it to work (NHS)
But yes, this is significantly worse than Friday for us,and we're not even the worst hit area, but no I don't expect well be hearing much about it in the news casue we're only northerners are'nt we!!

Just junction 10 and 11 both ways .
gettingolderandgrumpy · 21/02/2022 07:56

I agree much worse than Friday in north west .

wizzler · 21/02/2022 08:10

Agree with pp that this storm in South Yorkshire is the worst so far. Our park is closed, a fairly main road was impassable last night and from facebook photos it looks like the Don is going to breach

CaveMum · 21/02/2022 08:14

Very blustery here in East Anglia. I have a 5ft fern tree in the garden that looks like it might not survive - it’s got a permanent lean on it now from being battered by the westerly winds.

I’m not a forecaster but looking at windy.com am I right in thinking that big old mass of purple/blue in the mid Atlantic right now may well turn out to be Gladys?

Stay safe everyone.

AlternativelyWired · 21/02/2022 08:28

Awful here this morning and far worse than Friday. My bins didn't even move on Friday yet today they have. Trees are down, roads closed, motorways closed, rail line closed. School open 🤷🏼‍♀️

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 21/02/2022 08:40

It was the main news item on BBC Breakfast this morning, so does seem to be being talked about a bit on there. I do know how it feels though, many in the media seem to think England is only on one side of the Severn and forget we exist completely! Hmm We've not had much more than a slightly blustery day here, which is fortunate as Eunice was really bad here with the worst gusts I've ever seen. I really hope it starts to improve soon for those who have it bad today.

RampantIvy · 21/02/2022 08:41

85 flood warnings in Yorkshire. The Don has burst its banks at Meadowhall.

RedToothBrush · 21/02/2022 08:42

M60 Barton bridge closed, numerous other road closures, loads of flooding, trees down in several places (including one not too far from me).

We had nothing like this last week. It is by far worse.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 21/02/2022 08:52

It was worse here yesterday than Storm Eunice and it’s pretty windy this morning, a couple of times the gusts stopped DDog and I in our tracks 😳
Certainly Eunice was nowhere near as bad as ‘ordinary’ gales that hit us here on high ground during the year.
Little damage luckily, so far.

GloriaSmud · 21/02/2022 08:57

CaveMum I don't think so - that looks like it'll head towards Iceland. Scotland might get high winds on Thursday though - there might be some weather warnings for that, especially for the west coast.

Poor starling trying to feed from my bird feeder just now and carrying on despite being battered by shrub branches and swaying. Brave little soul. Think he managed to get a little bit!

(The feeder is secured with about 60 cable ties to the strongest branches due to our exposed position)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2022 09:08

Gladys might visit on Thursday.

So far for me Franklin has been measurably significantly less bad than Eunice. It will be interesting to compare the overall figures when it is all done. I think one of the differences is that Franklin has bought a significant amount of rainfall. I don't know why this wasn't warned for and I think this was an error.

Another difference is the location and timings of severe winds, which for Eunice was in the day time over densely populated and inland areas which rarely see such high winds. Away from the NW, weve not really seen the extremely high winds that were seen for Eunice.

A third factor to take into consideration is that wind direction can change local wind effects dramatically. So yes, people in some areas will be seeing higher wind speeds than those who recieved red warnings. Impacts may well be greater because we have so many trees in precarious positions now.

I think that one aspect this is illustrating to me, is that people don't take yellow wind warnings seriously enough. They don't just mean windy weather, they are issued because they cause dangerous weather that can impact infrastructure.

Today will see the wind gusts which are generally in the region of 50-60mph gradually die down from the north downwards, leaving a blustery evening.

I should state, that if Gladys is named, it looks like it would be a Scotland affair. Storms are only named if they have the potential to produce amber warnings.

CaveMum · 21/02/2022 09:24

Thanks Gloria. We could all do with a bit of respite now!

larkstar · 21/02/2022 09:26

BBC weather says we are seeing 60mph winds - it has completely snapped my pear tree at the base where it joins the root stock - it was about 7' high and I've had it for 3 years in a 60L pot. Never mind - worse things are happening to other people.

I wonder why that might be...

BBC Breakfast is filmed in Salford.
BBC News is based in London.

Given the number of flood warnings in place from the Environment Agency, i can not understand why there wasn't a higher warning for rain.

Wtf is the threshold for an amber rain warning?!

Met office:
Amber warnings are assigned when there is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, which could potentially disrupt the public's plans. This means there is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts, and the potential risk to life and property.

I know the ground was already heavily saturated, but even then the rain even yesterday afternoon was something else.

Anyone going out in it, in coats which were not suitable seriously was risking hypothermia or cold water shock.

There is an experiment that Bear Grylls does in cold water 'rain' to demonstrate this. The producers pulled it after 15 mins because of the state he was in.

Seriously, I don't get it. I'm used to 'northern weather'. Some of the rain we've had here in the last 24 hours has made some of the tropical downpours ive seen look like a shower.

DH and I will generally go out in all weather. We have good kit. This? Nope.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2022 10:43

I don't understand why warnings weren't issued for rain as I said. I agree with you. Though they don't issue them for the risk of being soaked to the skin. They clearly met their warnings criteria though. There was widespread surface water flooding which caused dangerous driving conditions and flooded railway lines. Note - they don't deal specifically with river flooding - that is down to the Environment Agency.

Look North this morning showed a lot of flooding from many rivers in cities.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/02/2022 11:15

We've had amber warning before for gust of high thirties. Today we were forecast gusts of low fifties.
