Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

But (with the usual 'if I'm reading the charts right' and it's long into the future when it comes to forecasting) it's looking colder the week after next

It hasn't been that great a day here (Leicester) ~ 'orribly cold and wet. We reached a high of 4.8c and that was at 4.16 this morning(!) but the temperature's dropping quickly now and it's 1.7C. 'Tis going to be a cold night.

Ohh can I get excited about Snow for mine and Ds2 birthday? (Jan 16 + 19)

GloriaSmud · 03/01/2015 18:20

Possibly leesmum. DD2's birthday is the 20th and ever since her birthday in 2013, when she had the first go on the new sledge (bought for Christmas), she's wanted snow again for her birthday!
(Disclaimer once again: it is a long time into the future when it comes to forecasting and will probably change!)

SpottyTeacakes · 03/01/2015 18:37

Miserable day here. I haven't even left the house Grin

mankyscotslass · 03/01/2015 19:43

THe Manchester Evenig News ia getting a tad excited about the end of next week .....here

leesmum · 03/01/2015 19:46

Fingers crosses Gloria funny how our climate has changed...all throughout my childhood I can remember lots of birthdays in the snow...but hardly any now Sad

leesmum · 03/01/2015 19:48

Manky I saw that too ...bit ott for them!

SwedeDreams · 03/01/2015 22:15

My weatherbug app is showing a 50% chance of 'a snowy mix' tonight? In London?

Kitten- has it gorn quite mad?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2015 22:44

Swede I'm not expecting any precipitation tonight for you.
It does look potentially stormy next weekend and GFS does seem keen to bring in colder in this model run, with perhaps snowy weather that following week, funny how things can look different from one day to the next.

Friday, Saturday do still look very windy uk wide. Any wintry stuff the following week looks to be a brief affair.

-2.1C here at the moment. Brrrrr!

GloriaSmud · 04/01/2015 09:38

We also have the added loveliness of fog as well!

digerd · 04/01/2015 10:41

SE.
It rained all day yesterday and then the skies cleared when it was dark resulting in a -1 and misty murks which we still have with a 0 degree.

Been waiting in vain for the mist to lift so can take the dog out in the sunshine. Now trying to decide what to wear as damp cold is nasty Sad

SpottyTeacakes · 04/01/2015 11:53

1.5 here. Brrr

GloriaSmud · 04/01/2015 14:23

We reached today's 'high' of 0.8C an hour ago, the sun came out for a bit, all the ice on the trees melted but now it's clouded over, there's a bit of fog hanging in the air and the temperature's dropped to 0.1C! Even more brrrrr!

catslave · 04/01/2015 17:01

Come to Cornwall! Dd and ds spent the afternoon running about in tshirts in and out of the sea... It is about 12 degrees and overcast. No wonder it hasn't snowed for 3 years. Again, I remember it snowing more than this when I was small.

BlackeyedSantaStuckUpAChimney · 04/01/2015 23:48

w mids fog never really cleared here today either. it was icey all morning and meltd in the afternoon.
no ice last time I looked. at the "electric shed" roof*

*electricity substation in garden, looked down upon from flat

LeftyLoony · 04/01/2015 23:54

It was a bit nippy at the stables today! (3 degrees, right next to Gatwick Airport at 2pm)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2015 09:55

I'm still keeping an eye on Saturday's storm. at the moment it looks like a generally windy day, but much more so in Scotland. Lots of snow for northern Scotland, mild in England and Wales. No widespread snow showing in the models.

Sad

no snow and windy weather.

at least we have had some snow so not quite as bad as last year when dd cried a lot.

Roseformeplease · 05/01/2015 19:32

Storms being mentioned up here (near Skye) for Friday / Saturday. Any more information? We have a potential drive to Inverness on Saturday morning but it can be rescheduled.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2015 21:32

Rose, Fridays doesn't look too bad - gales yes, but it's Saturday morning that looks nasty with severe gales in your area. I should be able to tighten up on timings tomorrow.

Roseformeplease · 05/01/2015 22:29

Thanks so much.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/01/2015 14:28

Things have changed a little today. met office warnings for severe gales both days but it looks like the affected area will be larger on Saturday still bringing northern England perhaps into the firing line too.

We need a snowy January wishing thread, OYBBK. One where we can gather and chant and light candles and stuff in the hope of a few snow days...
