Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

We still have a couple of days of nice cold weather then on New Years Day it looks set to warm a bit and unfortunately GFS shows a horrible period of cold zonality with low pressure after low pressure crossing us, bringing in wet, cold windy weather. It removes the possibility of snow for the week of the 4th apart from over northern hills at times.

Hurrah!! Smile

42notTrendy · 28/12/2014 10:30

I'm rather glad about no snow in first week back!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2014 10:56

much as I love dd being at home and the general chilledness, I tend to agree. The chaos would be ridiculous!

Ds1 had mocks the last 2 weeks of term so only went in for exams, having only one the 2nd week. So if it snowed w/c 5th and he couldn't go in that would be his fifth week off. I am not having it!

iseenodust · 28/12/2014 12:13

DS is desperate for snow. It's all over the TV how much there is but it never reached our part of Yorkshire. If you could arrange some in the next 48 hours please that would be most obliging. Thank you.

WhispersOfWickedness · 28/12/2014 19:13

Phew!
I am a little irritated, we drove out of our village today for the first time since before Christmas and as soon as we got out there was snow in the ditches Hmm Got to my ILs about 20 miles away and they had a few cm!! The kids loved it Grin

FatJerseyPostXmasSpud · 28/12/2014 21:03

Still no snow for us though :(

BathshebaDarkstone · 28/12/2014 21:26

I'm also rather glad that there'll be no snow on the 3rd, as we're out until about 1am. Xmas Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2014 22:00

Oh please don't take it as gospel, there's plenty of time for the forecast to switch, look how it did for Boxing Day!

High of 3degrees here today brrrr

GloriaSmud · 29/12/2014 07:32

Chilly here too (Leicester) -1.2C.

FloresCircumdati · 29/12/2014 07:48

-1°C here in Maidenhead, 4° high today.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/12/2014 08:42

A low of -5.5 overnight. Brrrr.
As we move into the New Year it does look to warm up though and nothing snowy shows at present.

"Nothing snowy" Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/12/2014 09:25

Will give more detail later but GFS shows a rather vigorous storm showing for Scotland on New Year's Day.

Still no hint of snow. Freezing with fog at the moment.....

Thought I'd seen some dodgy wind on the charts last week for Hogmany. Hope it's the 1st. Having experienced Edinburgh when all the Princes Street and up town stuff gets cancelled due to wind, I'd prefer the storm to hit later. ( Am also working the 31st )

GloriaSmud · 29/12/2014 12:35

Hope I'm reading the GFS chart right but next week looks more interesting when it comes to snow again but it's a looooong time into the future when it comes to forecasting so will probably all change.

In the meantime ~ England, Wales and N Ireland have had their coldest night of the year.
(Can I just remind posters to feed the birds and give them water in this cold weather. Have noticed a lot of feathered friends in my garden this morning looking for food.)

SpottyTeacakes · 29/12/2014 12:56

Was -3 when I went out this morning. 3 degrees now. Roads weren't gritted and there was a lot of ice on our roads near the river and massive frozen puddles at the side of the road

JillJ72 · 29/12/2014 13:08

-5 at 8am on our shed. Have bought bird food this morning, I expect a rousing chorus of "She's opening the restaurant" when I go out there in a minute Grin

GloriaSmud · 29/12/2014 13:47

Excellent Jill Xmas Grin ~ I'm sure they'll appreciate it!

SpottyTeacakes · 29/12/2014 13:50

Our birds won't eat the fat ball dd made at school Hmm

GloriaSmud · 29/12/2014 13:59

Fussy birds, Spotty ~ they don't know what they're missing out on!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 29/12/2014 15:58

Ddad yesterday "ohh it has left a thin layer of snow"
Me "look again, that is all ice!"

Cars were about an ice thick in ice. everything looked very pretty.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/12/2014 18:16

Looking at New Year's Day weather, I'm unsure whether anything will come of it other than rather a windy day. GFS keeps it as an open wave but the parallel runs do develop it as a fully closed low pressure. No met office warnings yet. I'm afraid I don't see the snow potential that Gloria did, but she will have been looking at the 06z model run and there's nothing there on the 12z run. Oh fickle things these forecasts are!
