Following on from the Boxing Day snow thread we have weather warnings from the met office for snow down part of the east coast and widespread ice. Around Northampton could also see some snow today. Take care over night and into tomorrow morning.

The theme of rather cold carries on through this week, especially away from western coasts. Some central areas could struggle to get above 0C even in the day time. Some sharp frosts. The next few days look dry and cold, with perhaps some freezing fog, especially over any snow fields. At the moment it looks like things might become milder through Thursday with rain moving in. GFS disagrees with this though and keeps things cold.

GFS then keeps teasing with a possibly dramatic return to school snow wise for some. Its a long way ahead but as ever I will keep you updated. However i may not be always able to answer specific questions due to real life so if you need to know urgently please check out the met office

If it's going to be this cold, it could at least try to snow. I don't even care if it settles any more. Just a few flakes would do.

Perihelion · 01/02/2015 17:28

Happy as I've found snow at my friend's house ( elevation 370m ish ) so have been sledging Grin

catslave · 01/02/2015 19:19

No idea what's up with the BBC weather site. We had a yellow warning for snow all weekend and nothing happened. No warnings for this week yet their forecast for our area is all night snow tomorrow Hmm

toomanyeasterbunnies · 01/02/2015 21:07

newbiecrafter By the time it was 9 am it was mostly gone. I was expecting to the dc's to come rushing in to tell me it had snowed. I have a feeling it rained afterwards. Such a shame as there was about 2cm. I am sure my dh thinks I imagined it. :(

Newbiecrafter · 01/02/2015 23:17

Toomany, I was up at 7 and there was nothing here. Curious to know where you are. 2cm sounds like a lot. It's lovely watching snow fall, esp when it settles.

Fingers crossed for February.
Xxx

Newbiecrafter · 01/02/2015 23:20

The weather warnings are odd.

I thought they would be issued in the event of adverse, tricky weather. Not just when it might snow.

We were under a yellow warning and got a bit on Thursday, I think, but it wasn't really warning worthy. I,ve been seeing those and getting excited, but I'm thinking that they are issued just to say there might be snow, not necessarily disruptive, snowed in type snow.

SwedeDreams · 02/02/2015 07:50

Where is kitten! I am so confused! Agree Met office warnings have been a bit rubbish this last week, all this taunting with promises of snow. Then nothing

It's totally bastard freezing here this morning in London with apparently snow tonight- which is clearly cobblers. Today shall be dry I think.

Perihelion · 02/02/2015 08:57

I think the weather warnings have been a bit shite and the Met Office really needs to sort out it's Warning map, but snow warnings are tricky. They aren't promises of snow unless red or maybe amber warnings. Maybe they'd be better with a % snow risk map, but even that would need to be on a local rather than national scale as so many factors are involved that result in whether you get snow/no snow/rain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2015 09:22

Sorry I've been rather poorly and am quite doped up with painkillers tucked up in bed.

Agree that the warnings have been shite. Snow is notoriously unpredictable, after all much of what they have been forecasting is snow showers and predicting exactly where a shower will happen two days in advance is impossible. a warning doesn't need to go out whenever they expect 1-2cm. That isn't severe weather. It needs to be much more targeted. Yes of course councils need to know where to have gritters on standby but they have their own commercial forecasts and don't rely on the public ones.

I have no idea why they have such a huge area for Wednesday for example. Most in the warning area won't see any snow, some will see lots and others may catch the odd shower.

newbiecrafter I am in Caterham . We are at the top of the hill so occasionally we will see snow and the valley will have nothing.

MrsVamos · 02/02/2015 10:27

No snow. Again. Sad

We are under the warning for Wednesday but I don't believe anything they say.

meglet · 02/02/2015 10:29

hope you are much better soon oybbk.

relieved you agree the warnings are weird this year. I thought it was just me being huffy about not getting any snow Blush

WhispersOfWickedness · 02/02/2015 11:12

Hope you are feeling better soon OYBBK Thanks

It must be so hard to predict Confused On Saturday morning, we were supposed to have cloud, followed by a bit of sleet and rain... It snowed heavily all morning Hmm But the week before last, snow was predicted and we got nothing Confused So now I don't know what to believe Grin At the moment, the met office is showing it snowing from 7pm tonight until 7am tomorrow, and our area (Lincolnshire Wolds) is named in the yellow warning, so who knows Confused

GloriaSmud · 02/02/2015 12:31

I think the metoffice website has been a bit shite since they 'improved' it a few months ago. I always preferred the old site with their warnings page as it seemed more 'people friendly'. This one would work OK if a) they didn't slap a warning on for every possible snow flurry (which might be as a result of this new 'improved' site as I don't remember it happening with the old one) and b) didn't put warnings, one on top of another (and I know that didn't happen with the old site) as then it gets all Confused.
And having to click through and decipher the 'weather impact matrix' along with the write up that goes with it, makes it all doubly Confused and time consuming to read as well.
The answer is to go back to the way it was

Hope you get better soon, OYBBK Flowers

43cupsoftea · 02/02/2015 12:49

Hope you feel better soon kitten.
Snow been quite entertaining here in Nottm! Now you see it, now you don't! Just damn cold at the moment!

Perihelion · 02/02/2015 12:58

I also miss the old Latest Observations page they had, where you could see all the readings from the main weather stations for the whole of the UK, for the last hour on one page, scrolling down. That doesn't exist anymore or I've not found it.

Hoping for snow as it's cold and the ground's frozen so it will lie Grin

Wishing you better and some snow to wach from your window OYBBK

FatJerseyPostXmasSpud · 02/02/2015 13:21

We're back up to an amber warning. had some hail today but nothing snowy yet. But apparently it will from mid afternoon....it can at least wait until the school run is over!

SwedeDreams · 02/02/2015 13:43

Sorry to hear you are not well, I hope you start to feel better very soon OYBBK.

I hate most of the weather sites for various reasons, number one being BBC weather which on my mobile merely shows for today, e.g. a grey cloud. And that is it. So helpful. There's probably more detail somewhere but I can't find it

Which do people like the best?

Endler32 · 02/02/2015 14:39

My weather app is saying snow for tonight and tomorrow for us ( dorset, Wiltshire ), not sure how good my app is as I just watched the local weather on tv and they say 'no snow' Sad, I am trying not to get excited as again I will probably be disappointed.

madasa · 02/02/2015 14:50

I have spent the last fortnight snow dancing in the hope of getting a snow day off work but no snow...nothing...nada....despite many warnings.

Now because I want to go away for a few days on Wed I am afraid to book anywhere in case I can't make it.

I wish it would make its mind up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2015 14:54

Thanks guys. I think there may be a little light snow in the south and east over night tonight. Biggest watch area for Wednesday seems to be Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

BlackeyedSusan · 02/02/2015 14:55

get well soon.

cold and dull here. far too much green and grey. no white.

really really want some snow. a proper snow day. cancelled the evening before so we do not have to get up.

FatJerseyPostXmasSpud · 02/02/2015 15:38

Get well soon OYBBK

We had some weird haily/snow/sleet style stuff just before the school run but nothing major

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 02/02/2015 15:57

OYBBK Hope you feel better soon.

We have no warnings in place for just outside Edinburgh until Wednesday, probably a good thing as DS left his winter coat in school.
