Potential storm Wednesday 10th- Thursday 11th [title edited by HQ]

For a few days now GFS has been consistently showing a storm heading for northern Scotland mid week next week. It has varied in intensity and location somewhat, but for this time out it has been quite remarkable in its consistency. ECMWF agrees with the genesis of the storm, but has a different location of centre and therefore also strength.

A deep low pressure is forecast to develop somewhere between Iceland and Northern Scotland. at present it is shown as a complex low with a wide influence. For most of us it looks to be a windy and perhaps quite wet day but at present it looks relatively nasty for those in Scotland, with subzero temperatures and perhaps severe gales, leading to the potential for blizzards.

Its still someway off and so I do expect the details to change. If it comes further south as per the current ECMWF then there could also be a snow risk to hilly parts of northern England too.

Could be rather windy early next week. Something I'm keeping an eye on.

Looks like there are some power cuts in the Western Isles and the north of Scotland here

Pretty mental here overnight & rain hammering down still.
Pitch dark this morning still also, dreading the walk to school , going to get soaked..

digerd · 10/12/2014 08:03

Strong winds woke me up but couldn't be bothered to open my eyes so no idea what the time was. But it has gone and is 5 degrees.
Strange that last evening the temp rose to 11 degrees by 01.30 this morning but then got colder by dawn. Sky must have cleared.
SE.

(Hope no one minds me re-posting the travel sites I listed yesterday)

TrafficScotland's weather section is here and there's a list of current incidents e.g. bridge closures etc here..
ScotRail
Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow Airport.

Stay safe everyone.

Was it actually thunder? I thought I had dreamt it!
Just west of Edinburgh here too, still so dark it could still be night time!

Igneococcus · 10/12/2014 08:22

Hail now.
It was definitely thunder at the West coast inkle don't know about over your side. I got up to watch the lightning for a bit.

Perihelion · 10/12/2014 10:03

Forth Road bridge is expecting the strongest winds at 5pm, with only cars allowed. Slept through thunder, but got a soaking walking the dogs. There's been a lot of rain.......

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2014 10:32

Storm is showing up well here. Strongest wind (from clicking on the storm using the mouse) has been 101km/h off west coast of Scotland, over the sea. Amazing though to see in the middle of the storm, the wind speed goes down to 7km/h.

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2014 10:37

Couple of flight cancellations at Glasgow Airport.

skolastica · 10/12/2014 10:38

Gusts to 70mph in the past couple of hours. With horizontal sleet/hail. Have to fill the coal buckets - don't really want to go outside....

middlings · 10/12/2014 10:41

Can I just put a place marker here as I'm one of the southerners who'll get hit tomorrow night.

I never bother with weather forecasts any more. I just look to see what OYBBK has to say about anything. Ever since you (very sensibly) advised us to delay our trip to Holyhead by a day in February, DH always says "What does that lady on MN have to say about it too?"!

Lampy · 10/12/2014 10:49

I'm at the top of a hill in Glasgow and it's horrible! Was worried one of my windows was going to blow in a little while ago but it seems to have calmed a bit in the past 20 minutes.

The roar of the wind in the trees is unbelievable, sounds like a jet is taking off.

GingleFox · 10/12/2014 11:25

Power went at 6ish (I was up already) and back on 10mins ago. Amazing that people go out to fix the grid in this weather.

Wind strong but doesn't seem worse than storm we had a few weeks ago, so maybe hasn't peaked yet.

Sea looks amazing! Waves are massive, and spraying far above the 40m trig point I can see from our kitchen (usually just laps around the bottom of the 20m cliffs on the other side, even at high tide).

Hope everyone is ok. Will now read thread Grin

Littlegiraffe · 10/12/2014 11:32

I'm on the west coast of Scotland and can officially confirm it is fucking windy Grin

GingleFox · 10/12/2014 11:47

Gloria that live storm-tracker is brilliant, but I am now officially crapping myself!

Perihelion · 10/12/2014 12:22

Wind not too bad in Edinburgh, but just had a wee hail storm with 1cm diameter hailstones battering the windows so loud, one dog started barking and the other was sick..oh and some thunder. Temp dropped so probably hail, sleet or snow for the next lot.

nulgirl · 10/12/2014 12:28

I flew out of Glasgow this morning. Pretty windy and had one aborted take-off due to strong gusts. Once we cleared the clouds the weather was perfect and flight was smooth. Flying home tomorrow night so hoping that worst is over.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/12/2014 12:39

Thought I heard some thunder here in Leith. It's very windy in our sheltered little spot so it must be awful in more exposed places.

It's days like this I'm so glad to be a SAHM. Have no reason to leave the house today. Snuggling up on the sofa with my two little girls.

Stay safe!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2014 12:53

Yay Ginfox, nice to see you back :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2014 12:56

nulgirl, glad your plane was able to escape, I hope the aborted take off wasnt too bad. Where are you flying back from?

Latest warnings

The warning area for thursday night/friday has been refined, I suspect it will be refined further in tomorrows warnings. I have to say the models are not handling this at all well. It's such a small scale feature and the solutions vary from quite windy to severe gales.

Today's peak gusts

weegiemum · 10/12/2014 13:06

Ginfox looks like it's wild up there (we used to live in Harris!) hoping everything is ok!
