Potential storm Wednesday 10th- Thursday 11th [title edited by HQ]

For a few days now GFS has been consistently showing a storm heading for northern Scotland mid week next week. It has varied in intensity and location somewhat, but for this time out it has been quite remarkable in its consistency. ECMWF agrees with the genesis of the storm, but has a different location of centre and therefore also strength.

A deep low pressure is forecast to develop somewhere between Iceland and Northern Scotland. at present it is shown as a complex low with a wide influence. For most of us it looks to be a windy and perhaps quite wet day but at present it looks relatively nasty for those in Scotland, with subzero temperatures and perhaps severe gales, leading to the potential for blizzards.

Its still someway off and so I do expect the details to change. If it comes further south as per the current ECMWF then there could also be a snow risk to hilly parts of northern England too.

For those on the south coast, especially east of the IOW try and get a good nights sleep tonight! If the little storm develops as it looks like at present then the worst of the winds will be around 3am on friday.

We've had all sorts of weather here, windy, rain, hailstones, sleet and thankfully the trampoline is still in my garden and hasn't blown over yet.

Igneococcus · 10/12/2014 13:54

We are now alternating between blue sky and ferocious hail.

GingleFox · 10/12/2014 14:18

Fine thanks Weegie, we're as prepared as we can be.

Just had another power cut, and suspect it won't be the last before the end.

Perihelion · 10/12/2014 15:24

Friday's Snow warning has now moved South and misses Edinburgh.....that's no fucking fair Xmas Envy

Littlegiraffe · 10/12/2014 15:27

I'm glad to hear that Peri, I'm working in Edinburgh on friday but need to get back home (to Ayrshire) to babysit my nephews! (Would love to be a fly on the wall if DH had cope with 3 boys under 5 on his own Grin)

Roseformeplease · 10/12/2014 15:38

Wild, wild night here but an amazingly welcome duvet day for the whole family. Power has remained on, thankfully. The sea is absolutely wild and the weather is relentless - wind all the time with a mixture of hail and rain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2014 15:46

I have to say that I'm jealous of those of you with views of the sea today. It must be really something to watch!

Perihelion · 10/12/2014 15:52

Little griaffe I think it's your duty to get snowed in, in Edinburgh so your DH gets to enjoy an exciting challenge with an added skype call Grin

Roseformeplease · 10/12/2014 16:09

It is pretty incredible but, according to my scientist DH, the "fetch" here is not as good as it is further out. I think in laywoamn's terms that men's that the islands protect us from the open sea and so there is not a huge area for the waves to grow over.

Car parks by the sea closed in nearby village to prevent cars being washed away. Also, the sea churns up and spits out a lot of rock so it can be dangerous. Our house is about 100 yards from the sea, but up a hill so we are safe to enjoy the views.

Roseformeplease · 10/12/2014 16:10

Bloody ipad.

Laywoman's terms

Means that the islands.

Littlegiraffe · 10/12/2014 16:15

I would honestly pay to see the carnage Peri! (May also have to pay sometime to clean my house too though... They're a grubby bunch!)

The winds up again, after a slightly more settled couple of hours there. My roof sounds like it's about to fall in! Shock

Igneococcus · 10/12/2014 16:20

Our power just went, emergency generator at work came on but I bet we are off at home as well.

dementedma · 10/12/2014 17:03

Wild driving to Edinburgh airport this morning but flight got off OK and was fine once through the clouds. Arrived to brilliant sunshine in Windsor but wind picking up here now....

HesterShaw · 10/12/2014 17:39

I think forecasters and journos should make it clearer that 12 metre seas are referring to open ocean swell heights rather than waves that height hitting the shore. And that, like Rose says, if there are islands in the way, then a lot of the power of those waves is even more dissipated before they land (though less so on the western side of the islands of course).

Magic Seaweed must be rubbing their hands with glee again this year. Last year everyone discovered how to screengrab one of their swell charts, and now the tabloids use nothing else, because they are so colourful and dramatic.

youarekiddingme · 10/12/2014 18:58

OYBBK you are a legend!

I'm south coast (opposite IOW!) are we expected to have strong winds tomorrow night/ early morning?

so I know whether to just put DS in bed with me or not from the off!

HesterShaw · 10/12/2014 19:11

Tomorrow night along the south coast looks very windy though not as bad as what Scotland and Nn Ireland have just had David Braine just said so.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/12/2014 23:07

Haven't RTFT.

What I want to know is if I am flying form West Coast of Canada on Friday afternoon our time, will I miss this entirely? I am a really really scared bad flyer and not happy about the thought of this at all. Flying into Heathrow...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2014 23:28

Youarekidding yes, it does look very windy. I'll do an update in the am :)

MrsTP you will be missing the worst comfortably, I suppose there may be some knock on delays purely because heathrow operates at capacity and so it doesn't take much to knock things off schedule.

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 11/12/2014 00:57

Thanks, OYBK. Delays I can cope with. Scary weather, not so much. Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2014 07:35

Morning all :)

Some good news for those in the south - at present the winds don't look to be so strong overnight. As stated previously there has been a huge amount of uncertainty over this feature and still yet things may change. However at present we are looking at gusts of 60-70mph, further inland 50mph and in the London to Birmingham band gusts circa 40mph. I will update later.

Further north, in the north half of North Yorkshire and Cumbria snow is the the story of the day especially overnight tonight.

Bit windy and dark here in Suffolk. Have got firewood and candles stacked in readiness. Will make my curried lamb and lentil stew this afternoon just in case. Grin

Igneococcus · 11/12/2014 08:59

Last night was probably as bad as the night before here West coast Scotland and there is more lighning and hail right now too.
I thought this storm was going to move away at some time last night. It doesn't look like it at the moment.

Perihelion · 11/12/2014 09:13

SNOW Xmas Grin ........( it's not lying yet, but some big fat flakes )

GrouchyKiwi · 11/12/2014 09:17

My two year old is loving watching the snow fall. It's a shame it's too wet for it to lie.
