Potential storm Wednesday 10th- Thursday 11th [title edited by HQ]

For a few days now GFS has been consistently showing a storm heading for northern Scotland mid week next week. It has varied in intensity and location somewhat, but for this time out it has been quite remarkable in its consistency. ECMWF agrees with the genesis of the storm, but has a different location of centre and therefore also strength.

A deep low pressure is forecast to develop somewhere between Iceland and Northern Scotland. at present it is shown as a complex low with a wide influence. For most of us it looks to be a windy and perhaps quite wet day but at present it looks relatively nasty for those in Scotland, with subzero temperatures and perhaps severe gales, leading to the potential for blizzards.

Its still someway off and so I do expect the details to change. If it comes further south as per the current ECMWF then there could also be a snow risk to hilly parts of northern England too.

Bit of snow showing up here on uksnow, including a few showers not too from where I am (Leicester) up Nottingham way.

Namelesswonder · 11/12/2014 10:03

Just heard on the news that 100 vehicles were stuck on the A68 last night (at border between Scotland and England) due to snow drifts. Had to be dug out by snow ploughs. What a nightmare!

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 11/12/2014 10:06

We've had hailstorm after hailstorm after hailstorm where I am on the NW coast. Horizontal hail at times as the wind is so strong. Its the gusts that get you as they're quite powerful.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2014 10:06

Ineococous, its not due to move out until today, slowly easing off.

Yay Peri!! Xmas Grin

Poor souls Nameless. What a nightmare for them.

Oh thanks OYBBK, this has been one of the longest storms I can remember here.
Hailing again, it's basically been a series of hail showers with thunder and lightning with very short gaps in between for the past 48 hours or so.

BlackeyedSantaStuckUpAChimney · 11/12/2014 11:16

reports here

GingleFox · 11/12/2014 11:42

Wind has eased considerably here, and sea not nearly so massive (still wouldn't fancy being out in it though). Several ships and fishing boats passing first thing this morning, presumably now playing catch-up. Power cut 9-11am due to lightening strike on the mainland.

It's now more like a typical windy day here, with occasional hail battering the window.

Stay safe folks.

BBC has a report here (check out the footage of lightning striking a wind turbine Xmas Shock)

warnings
Very late warning for snow and ice today, more like latest observations! Extended snow warning area for tomorrow.

I LOVE SNOW Xmas Grin

mankyscotslass · 11/12/2014 12:26

Woohoo we are under tomorrows warning now! Not holding my breath though. Xmas Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2014 12:41

Just catching up :)

met office warnings

it seems that the met office still feel that it could gust to 70+mph along the south coast and 50-60mph inland. Time to tether those trampolines --unless you are hoping for a new one for Christmas]]

It almost is behaving like a winter version of a hurricane (note that I'm not saying its a hurricane!) with so much convective weather buried in it.

This stunning photo popped up on my Twitter feed.

The cloud formation is glorious - it looks like a painting.

Peri: the snow actually lay here in Leith. What's it like in other parts of the City? Almost makes me want to take the little girls into town to play!

GingleFox · 11/12/2014 14:36

What an amazing photo Wooly. Where was it taken?

TheWoollybacksWife · 11/12/2014 14:46

Gingle no idea where it was taken - it was a retweet by Simon Mayo. The photo is credited to Ken Prior.

CruCru · 11/12/2014 15:03

We had gales overnight last night and the night before in the Isle of Wight (close to the Needles). Driving back through the New Forest, lots of trees have come down or have branches bent off. The M3 was closed for a bit while they cleared up some trees off the motorway. Got to London - nothing.

HesterShaw · 11/12/2014 15:40

What an absolutely stunning skyscape. Anyone a cloud expert? What's that all about? OYBBK I'm looking at you mainly.

hoochymama1 · 11/12/2014 17:28

Amazing clouds, Wooly looks like a Van Gough painting...

youarekiddingme · 11/12/2014 17:47

AMAzing photo

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2014 18:54

It looks like the worst of the winds will be pushed back a little til close to dawn on the southeast coast - 60-70mph I think though perhaps higher in isolated spots, 50-60mph to the west of the IOW around 3am 40-50mph inland, again some areas could see higher gusts if a squall line develops along the cold front.

So not terrible, but some damage and disruption possible. More snow over night for parts of the north Midlands, southern northern England.

Beautiful picture!

Icy and white here now. Just had little cub scouts at my door ringing a bell and singing, so sweet and Christmassy.

Newbiecrafter · 11/12/2014 20:39

Bbc breakfast had a report this morning with a guest from the Cloud Appreciation Society, and I think they showed that picture on there. I can,t remember where it was taken, but I'm pretty sure it was somewhere in the british isles.

Very stunning!

BeHoHoho, that sounds so lovely and Christmassy!
