Potential storm Wednesday 10th- Thursday 11th [title edited by HQ]

For a few days now GFS has been consistently showing a storm heading for northern Scotland mid week next week. It has varied in intensity and location somewhat, but for this time out it has been quite remarkable in its consistency. ECMWF agrees with the genesis of the storm, but has a different location of centre and therefore also strength.

A deep low pressure is forecast to develop somewhere between Iceland and Northern Scotland. at present it is shown as a complex low with a wide influence. For most of us it looks to be a windy and perhaps quite wet day but at present it looks relatively nasty for those in Scotland, with subzero temperatures and perhaps severe gales, leading to the potential for blizzards.

Its still someway off and so I do expect the details to change. If it comes further south as per the current ECMWF then there could also be a snow risk to hilly parts of northern England too.

Shipping forecast (inshore waters) is warning of violent storm and "phenomenal" seas in next 24hrs. I'm curious to see what that looks like.

Meanwhile, it is flipping windy. Local forecast predicting gusts of up to 70mph this afternoon. I've just been out to check there's nothing liable to blow away. Not expecting to get back outside til sometime Thurs.

All battery lamps/torches ready, fire laid ready in case of power cut and loss of central heating.

Getting wilder here. Electricity lines are really blowing about. I bought 2 led lanterns today, just in case of a black out.

howyalikedemapples · 09/12/2014 15:27

Am in Fife too justmuddling, tis very blawy! Am lokking forward to some snow though, we are quite high up (for Fife ha) and seem to get it when other places roundabout may not. Out to do animals shortly, thermals on i think!

JustMuddlingBobBobBobbingAlong · 09/12/2014 15:31

howyalike, I'm the opposite, 2 minutes from the beach. Probably no snow for me. Boo, hiss. Sad

WankingInAWinterWonderland · 09/12/2014 15:43

I have tied the trampoline to the fence, hopefully it shouldn't escape next door Hmm

weegiemum · 09/12/2014 15:50

It's pretty wild here in Glasgow now!

Dh has just phoned to say he thinks he should stay over at work tonight as it's unlikely he'll get back in the morning (he takes a ferry to work!) and his surgery have spent this afternoon arranging alternatives for medications that need to be refrigerated as SSE have said there are likely to be power cuts in the area.

It's got a lot colder in the last wee while here, my Polish cleaner is complaining about the cold!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 16:36

Have to say Ginfox, I rather wish I could be there. I'd bring sloe gin! Good luck though. Hope you can stay warm.

Good luck to your dh weegie. I hope it doesnt get too rough for him and that his patients appreciate it!

Its quite windy down south now

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 19:00

So far it is all looking as forecast.
It looks increasingly likely that it could be pretty stormy in the SE corner in the early hours of Friday. I think there will be some disruption to cross channel ferries.

It's wild out there!

Ginfox · 09/12/2014 19:28

You're welcome anytime OYBBK! It's really bloody noisy outside now. Don't know if we'll get much sleep tonight.

Roseformeplease · 09/12/2014 19:36

Schools closed here (North West of Scotland) for tomorrow. Head announced it today (I am a teacher) and we all kept straight faces until the door closed and then got excited. Best case is school closed but a windy, wet day with power.

We have an open fire, a gas cooker, torches and books. We are ready. DD has worked out how many films we can watch before draining the batteries on our gadgets. DH is cooking a warming curry.

As bad as Bawbag would be bad, though, as that kept us off for 3 days and I have exam classes to work with and the school Christmas production to put on.

Itsfab · 09/12/2014 19:42

It is windy all ready here tonight.

HesterShaw · 09/12/2014 19:43

Good grief, stay safe Scots! Shock

I've only seen phenomenal seas once since I have become obsessed with interested in the weather and oceans. They're talking about eighteen metre swells. That's fucking massive

Ginfox · 09/12/2014 19:46

All council premises closed here tomorrow (Western Isles). Buses running a Saturday service but expect disruption. No ferries. Advice is to stay at home and keep an eye out for your neighbours.

Feel a bit sorry for the kids and teachers - a cheeky day off school, but can't go outside and possibly no power. And we don't really get snow days either.

WankingInAWinterWonderland · 09/12/2014 19:48

It must be bad, my teenager actually wore his jacket out tonight. Xmas Shock

HesterShaw · 09/12/2014 19:50

badRoly for once the weather here is only a bit windy as opposed to extremely windy. The Inshore Waters forecast is only Very Rough occasionally High as opposed to Very High to Phenomenal.

Ginfox · 09/12/2014 19:50

Hester we can add Fucking Massive to OYBBK's storm scale. My own scale is based on the volume I've got the TV at so I can hear it above the wind in the chimney or hail on the window.

skolastica · 09/12/2014 19:52

Scotland west coast - wind speed currently 40mph

dementedma · 09/12/2014 19:56

Shite. Due to fly from Edinburgh to London tomorrow. Are flights being cancelled?

WankingInAWinterWonderland · 09/12/2014 20:00

I'm scared of the wind, I'm such a wimp. Just seen the weather 60+ winds and scattered snow showers for tomorrow

meglet · 09/12/2014 20:17

It's gusty in North Hampshire.

I walked back from the gym frowning at the weather thinking "OYBBK predicted this last week" .

Stay safe everyone.

skolastica · 09/12/2014 20:23

gusting to 52mph - am alone and looks like I'm going to be spending the night watching the weather station updates, as long I don't lose either the phone or the electric.

grumpyoldgitagain · 09/12/2014 20:25

Getting quite windy here now on the east coast

Sat in the centre of Hull waiting for my slightly drunken DW to appear and the van is rocking gently with the wind and the lampposts are swaying in the breeze as well

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 20:27

You see schools are sensible up there. On the very rare occasions we get such severe weather everyone expects to carry on as normal down here and then get bewildered and frustrated when they can't putting lives at risk.

Demented you'll need to check with the airports.
