Potential storm Wednesday 10th- Thursday 11th [title edited by HQ]

For a few days now GFS has been consistently showing a storm heading for northern Scotland mid week next week. It has varied in intensity and location somewhat, but for this time out it has been quite remarkable in its consistency. ECMWF agrees with the genesis of the storm, but has a different location of centre and therefore also strength.

A deep low pressure is forecast to develop somewhere between Iceland and Northern Scotland. at present it is shown as a complex low with a wide influence. For most of us it looks to be a windy and perhaps quite wet day but at present it looks relatively nasty for those in Scotland, with subzero temperatures and perhaps severe gales, leading to the potential for blizzards.

Its still someway off and so I do expect the details to change. If it comes further south as per the current ECMWF then there could also be a snow risk to hilly parts of northern England too.

Today was worse than yesterday here in my bit of NW Scotland. Hail storms and thunder all day. Lost power earlier but back on now. Wind of 144 mph was recorded on St Kilda yesterday!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2014 22:15

Welcome back fuckweasel :)

slight upgrade in warnings but over all the very strong winds won't be long lasting and they re at a time when most will be indoors safe and sound.

Yey now looking like snow will be minimal here in North Yorkshire / Co. Durham. Please tell me kitten I'm right (or rather the BBC and the weather page I follow on Facebook is)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2014 22:33

It doesn't look too bad I think biscuits, south North Yorkshire seems more likely to get it. But snow turns on a knife edge. A degree here or there makes all the difference.

I'm right opposite IOW! Already have DS with tonsillitis in bed with me so not going to matter with wind now as unlikely to sleep well anyway!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2014 22:40

I always find forecasting around Portsmouth/Southampton a bit tricky. the IoW does strange things to your wind. Upstream or downstream is much easier.

Just seen some photos of snow on UK weather forecast on facebook. And a video of the sea at Torquay, wow. Meanwhile Preston is doing its usual of um, rain. And wind Hmm

youarekiddingme · 12/12/2014 06:33

Well you were pretty spot on! 3am very high winds and rain passed by over a few hours!

rocketeer · 12/12/2014 06:43

Yep, all calm in Portsmouth apart from the rain. We get a lot of weather warnings but they never really amount to much, we have the hill one side and IOW the other protecting us. I always take the warnings with a pinch of salt!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/12/2014 07:47

It was about 4am when I noticed the very strong winds, but I may have slept through the worst of it Grin

Snow and hail in chorley!

HesterShaw · 12/12/2014 15:17

Wind of 144 mph was recorded on St Kilda yesterday!

DH told a tableful of Christmas revellers last night that there had been a 144 ft wave off St Kilda yesterday. There was a doubtful silence and people resumed their conversations.

I think this was the actual fact he was getting it confused with,

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/12/2014 15:22

144ft wave Grin
mind you 144mph gust may well have been met with a doubtful silence too. That is extraordinary.

He also regaled everyone about how we never get hurricanes in Britain. We may have hurricane force winds but we don't get hurricanes as such because by the time they get to water this cool, then the winds are losing energy.

There was only one person who showed any interest. Sometimes I despair of him, I really do.

HesterShaw · 12/12/2014 16:03

regaled with not about Blush

SE.
Storm woke me up again in the early hours of this morning.
Felt really mild until the sky cleared in the afternoon
Gone down to 3 degrees now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/12/2014 20:15

It sounds like he and I would get on very well Hester Grin (though it's not about wind strength it's about tropical characteristics!)

He's always asking me what "Mumsnet Weather Lady" is saying about the latest storm.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 16/12/2014 19:10

Just popping in to see if you have all voted on the Christmas names thread!? No hints or anything, but our resident Weather Guru is up for nomination!!

Vote HERE. Or the Weather Gods will be out to get you Xmas Grin

WandaFuca · 16/12/2014 20:43

I couldn't figure out how to vote on your link, Chipping. (I think you linked to the results page, though it could just be my browser mucking things up - again.)

I had a look on Site Stuff, and this link worked for me: www.mumsnet.com/Polls/christmas-namechange-2014

So I duly voted for our Weather Guru. Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2014 20:59

Sorry about that. Not sure if it's because I'd already voted or just because the iPad and I are still trying to work each other out Xmas Grin.

Get voting the rest of you!! Or else do not be complaining you aren't getting the weather you want! Xmas Grin
