Potential storm Wednesday 10th- Thursday 11th [title edited by HQ]

For a few days now GFS has been consistently showing a storm heading for northern Scotland mid week next week. It has varied in intensity and location somewhat, but for this time out it has been quite remarkable in its consistency. ECMWF agrees with the genesis of the storm, but has a different location of centre and therefore also strength.

A deep low pressure is forecast to develop somewhere between Iceland and Northern Scotland. at present it is shown as a complex low with a wide influence. For most of us it looks to be a windy and perhaps quite wet day but at present it looks relatively nasty for those in Scotland, with subzero temperatures and perhaps severe gales, leading to the potential for blizzards.

Its still someway off and so I do expect the details to change. If it comes further south as per the current ECMWF then there could also be a snow risk to hilly parts of northern England too.

Ironically the original title of the thread said Tuesday/Wednesday! I should have asked mn to change it to Tuesday-Friday, only the worst of the winds aren't expected til tomorrow and the Friday feature wasn't showing in the models at the time. Never mind.

Something just flew past the window. It sounded plastic :o

I agree about the sense thing. People seem utterly startled in many parts of the south when the weather actually impacts on their daily lives. They blame those in power for not doing....God knows.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 21:03

We just had a proper whistly gust. Just the one mind.

And a shrieky one! Grin must be the wind direction.

Its getting quite breezy here in Northern Ireland too (County Antrim). I sent dh out to tie everything down outside. Hope it doesn't get any worse, I hate it so much.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 21:28

Nicky it's potentially going to be a rough day or so.

This is bizarre weather, one minute it's gusty and horrid then it all calms down again.

nicky2512 · 09/12/2014 21:38

O No! Its calmed down a bit for now but rain is on very heavy. Just checked local forecasts and looks like the worst winds will be here by early hours of tomorrow. Ear plugs for me tonight and probably ds in bed with us when it wakes him!

pepperrabbit · 09/12/2014 21:57

Marking my place (as a southerner!)
I'm preparing my smug "I told you so" face for DH, who has refused to replace the fence all summer when no one else needs fence panels and will now probably have to spend the weekend fighting for finding new panels with everyone else! The fence looks like this /// at the moment, and if the storm hits Thurs night it will look like this _
(Disclaimer - I'm perfectly capable of ordering fence panels myself but he can get a discount!)
Hope everyone stays safe tonight.

RudeBarbandCustard · 09/12/2014 21:59

Gusty wind and rain in North Wales, but nothing too bad yet.

Have moved the car out of the shadow of the old oak tree with threatening branches just in case...

FurryDogMother · 09/12/2014 22:01

Right now (and has been for most of today) it's mad on the west coast of Ireland - howling wind and lots of rain interspersed with heavy hail. We've battened down the hatches and shan't be going anywhere until Friday (luckily, we can do that).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 22:09

I'm going to bid you all good night. I hope that you all manage some sleep.

Starting to get fairly lively on the IOM now & there were some impressive seas earlier. I can't even picture what a phenomenal sea state would look like, I've only seen high, & that wasn't today.

Naoko · 09/12/2014 23:04

The forecast for tomorrow looks a bit exciting here on the North Wales coast . I was going to tidy up the garden this week because it's a mess of branches and leaves from next door's massive tree, but I think I'll just leave it till this calms down, I'll only have to do it all over again otherwise.

Other than that, I have a driving lesson tomorrow. That might be a little interesting.

fuckweasel · 10/12/2014 00:12

NW Scotland; relatively calm here. Some squally wintry showers throughout the evening. Though we are not facing west. Supposed to hit us in the early hours.

Ginfox · 10/12/2014 02:04

It's quietened down outside just now. Calm before the s

Ginfox · 10/12/2014 02:06

Ahem...

Calm before the storm perhaps?

(thanks to dd2 for hitting send too soon)

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 10/12/2014 02:36

Naoko i would probably clear up the garden, less missiles to be thrown by the wind.

Was wild earlier but it had calmed down. Having driven in the really bad storms last year and facing the same journey tomo I can't say that I am overly thrilled but as it was safer to be driving than in the house the journey will be made. And I shall be hoping that either the wind is not as severe as the other storms, or the new roof that was required after those storms stays put better than the last one.

Was nice to see snow sunday night /monday although utterly grateful it was too warm for it to stay.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 10/12/2014 03:19

It's still shrieking and whistling here (SE). No chance of sleeping, that's for sure!

Ginfox · 10/12/2014 03:32

It's here! What a noise. Already had a brief powercut, and doubt we'll get through without another one.

Good luck everyone. See you on the other side!

skolastica · 10/12/2014 04:19

41mph average wind speed with gusts to 50mph in the last hour. thunder and lightning. west of scotland, argyll. by the sea.

CormoranStrike · 10/12/2014 06:16

I was woken just before six by what I think was thunder, or something enormous blowing over.

We've had snow or hailstones, not sure which.

It's miserable looking and gusty and brrrrrrrr.

I am just west of Edinburgh near the Forth.

Igneococcus · 10/12/2014 06:16

There was thunder and lightning just now too, also in Argyll, right at the coast.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2014 07:18

Morning all. Sounds like some of you have had a rough night.

You can find peak gusts here with the Cairngorms recording 108mph.

Things will continue in a similar vein throughout today, very slowly easing off into tomorrow. increasing threat of snow in lowland areas in Scotland as we go through today.

Thursday night into Friday is the south's turn with the SE coast seeing gusts of 70mph+ and inland gusts of around 50mph (so a fair bit windier than last night which saw a peak of around 35-40mph)
