Potential storm Wednesday 10th- Thursday 11th [title edited by HQ]

For a few days now GFS has been consistently showing a storm heading for northern Scotland mid week next week. It has varied in intensity and location somewhat, but for this time out it has been quite remarkable in its consistency. ECMWF agrees with the genesis of the storm, but has a different location of centre and therefore also strength.

A deep low pressure is forecast to develop somewhere between Iceland and Northern Scotland. at present it is shown as a complex low with a wide influence. For most of us it looks to be a windy and perhaps quite wet day but at present it looks relatively nasty for those in Scotland, with subzero temperatures and perhaps severe gales, leading to the potential for blizzards.

Its still someway off and so I do expect the details to change. If it comes further south as per the current ECMWF then there could also be a snow risk to hilly parts of northern England too.

Morning all. Yesterday evening was v calm, but wind has been steadily increasing all night and is now howling around the house. Expecting 30-40mph winds with 50-60mph gusts today (not unusual for here tho).

We can see the Atlantic and the Minch from our house, and waves were already pretty massive yesterday, so interested to see what it looks like when it gets light. Watched a tiny fishing boat struggling along yesterday. Poor buggers that have to be out in this.

OYBBK am I right in thinking tomorrow's storm will peak during the day? I hope so, always much scarier at night.

oricella · 09/12/2014 07:53

Crikey - just watching the swell chart for the west coast - that looks seriously unpleasant

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 07:57

Morning Gin and morning all! Thought I'd do this thread first today.

So today already the winds as Ginfox says are pretty strong. The will drop just a little today before picking up again this evening. In the early hours over night I think it could be quite noisy with winds picking up between 60-70mph off the west coast of Scotland by dawn. 60mph gusts pretty widespread across Scotland through the day tomorrow, 60-70mph down the west coast of Scotland and northern England, with some areas likely to see 80mph+ I think.

For lowland levels a lot of rain around, but as we go through today and tomorrow becoming increasingly wintry. However its impossible to be specific as it looks currently like a right messy old mix.

I still think that there could be western coastal flooding from this storm with some very large waves.

The storm is slow to clear with gales affecting northern areas well into thursday.

The risk of gales then increases further south thursday night into Friday with widespread gales of 40-50mph gusts, and around the south coast of 60-70mph (especially around Sussex) but these very strong winds arent expected to last more than a few hours and will die down through Friday.

So all in all, quite a lively affair, but not an extreme one (though the wave heights may be pretty remarkable)

Oh, yes - Thursday night. I am flying in it, obviously. I do shite landings all the time, but then again I land in some fairly shite places in shite weather Wink Grin

RudeBarbandCustard · 09/12/2014 08:36

Good Morning. I saw the weather forecast and thought to myself 'I must check in with OYBBK for the full story'!

I'm in North Wales. It looks like we'll get it less severely than the North, but we're still talking about strong winds right? Do I need to batten down the hatches?

My dog freaks out when it's windy overnight.... am I going to have a sleepless night I wonder?

Perihelion · 09/12/2014 08:37

On CBBC news, they've just descibed the possible wave height as being 2 giraffes high.........apart from being perhaps the most random measure of waves, that could be 10m+ Shock

Warming up now and a wee breeze now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 08:44

Two giraffes high Grin!

Rude, yes I would tidy things away, tether your trampoline, that sort of thing. It will be less than some of last years storms but these things can catch us unaware after so many months without a big storm.

Thank you OYBBK

Last year when we had the severe gales, I was telling DH to secure stuff in the yard, and he didn't believe me. He had no idea it was going to be so bad, and it was entirely down to you and your accurate warnings. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

WankingInAWinterWonderland · 09/12/2014 10:30

That's the wind getting up in Edinburgh. I can't turn the trampoline upside down as it has a big safety net, fingers crossed the wind doesn't catch it.

Cindy34 · 09/12/2014 10:52

Backinthebox - no shite landings, they are either a landing or a crash. If the fuselage is still intact, I'd call it a landing.

As the winds are westerly will that mean the south east sees little action?

Perihelion · 09/12/2014 11:06

Grin Backinthebox

Wanking love the name Grin My trampoline is tied to a tree with a piece of rope. That way it may levitate but doesn't go anywhere. IMO the tie down kits with spikes in the ground are shite if the soil's wet.

Aye Edinburgh's getting a wee bit gusty. Why is it always bin day on the windy days. Already there's wheelie bins all over the place and new for this storm, food waste bins.....

skolastica · 09/12/2014 11:22

Stormy Scotland west coast here - sounds worse than it is (slates rattling) as only 25mph with gusts to 30. Strongest gust just after 6.00am at 43mph. Horizontal rain. (we have an amateur weather buff a couple of miles away who has an excellent weather station that puts results directly online)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 11:41

Cindy, its because the storm is way up in the north that the SE wont see action til thursday night/friday. Read my morning update for more info :)

The wind's beginning to pick up in NE England. It wouldn't have been so noticeable if it wasn't for the fact that it was still around freezing point, when I did the school run, this morning, giving a wind chill at -5. My face hurt, by the time I got home!

It's ridiculously dark. Need the lights on to see to do anything sort of dark. Just have the illumination from my laptop, at the moment, but I end up feeling like I'm in a goldfish bowl, otherwise!

Igneococcus · 09/12/2014 11:54

Eeeek, I'm now right at the edge of an amber warning zone for tomorrow, that was still yellow when I looked in the morning.
Miserable here already.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 11:59

amber warnings for those who need the link.

The met office tend to update their warnings once a day around 11am-12pm ish unless they need to do an urgent update to imminent weather.

The warnings for thursday are confined to the storm as it affects the north. Friday there are some snow warnings out and for the gales which will hit the south.

TrafficScotland's weather section is here and there's a list of current incidents e.g. bridge closures, here for travellers in Scotland.

Sensible BBC report on the coming storm. The usual standard of storm reporting from The Express!

badRoly · 09/12/2014 12:28

Blimey! Are we going to miss the worst of it for once down here in sub tropical Cornwall?! Shock

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2014 12:28

ScotRail information is here. Can't see any disruption at Scottish airports at the moment but Glasgow Airport's website is here and Edinburgh's is here.

Perihelion · 09/12/2014 12:38

10.5C in my Edinburgh garden at the moment and only 40mph gusts, but two days of wind warnings and then a yellow SNOW warning for Friday! Grin. Oh weather how I've mssed you Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2014 13:34

oh for pities sake. What on earth is Piers Corbyn on???

Please ignore the Express everyone. Once again they are talking complete bollocks.

justmuddlingalong · 09/12/2014 14:29
