Well, the moment has come

The 19th December - when many kids break from school has appeared in the GFS charts.....

I'm going to do my best to update this at least once each day, but bear with me if life interferes a bit. My usual disclaimer: I'm only an amateur and I get things wrong. I dont say this out of false modesty but because its true and for important forecasts and for making decisions please refer to the met office.

Also at this range the forecast will be complete crap anyway and will change daily. As we get closer to the Christmas holidays other models will come into range and things will start to become more accurate - hopefully!

So:

Friday 19th (GFS) - The day starts off cold with temps around freezing. Some precipitation but it looks to err on the wrong side of frozen (ie not). Europe isnt looking cold for this time of year and so we are looking to our north and north west for the cold at this point.
That's as far as the model goes Xmas Grin but later in the day I would expect it to end up in single fig temps. Might update this on the next model run.

I never knew you did threads like this?! Beyond happy now. Thanks OYBBK ThanksBrew

HellKitty · 05/12/2014 08:08

I'm so glad I found this! A dad at DC3s primary a few years ago would do this as a hobby. He told me one christmas how the snow would last until March - I scoffed but he was right.

blibblibs · 05/12/2014 10:45

Keeping an eye on the 20th, we're moving house that day and have a fair old journey up the M1 so hoping the rain and snow stay away until after that weekend

Flingmoo · 05/12/2014 10:49

Can't believe I never knew about OYBBK and her meteorological talents before the London meetup, now I'll be following eagerly Xmas Smile

NotAnotherPackedLunchBox · 05/12/2014 11:05

Thank you OYBBK for this thread Thanks I really wanted a christmas tree emoticon Grin
I'm going to be riveted this year. Hoping for lots of snow but not until the 22nd so all the family manage to assemble before getting snowed in together.

Titsalinabumsquash · 05/12/2014 11:08

Woohoo! I love OYBK weather threads Smile

If you'd be so kind as to arrange a white Christmas for us on the south coast, you'd make a pregnant lady happy...

Wait, you do control the snow right?! Wink

RustyBear · 05/12/2014 11:16

We're having Christmas at the top of a Cotswolds hill, and DH will want to leave at the merest hint of a snowflake, so I'm hoping it will hold off till the 27th! After that, it can do what it likes. (it will, anyway, I know...)

imustbepatient · 05/12/2014 11:17

Anyone and everyone who wants snow can have it, as long as there is no snow / ice on or in the region of Heathrow until the 23rd!

We are flying to the Antipodes and I will personally get out and shovel snow / hair dryer ice / beg and plead with ground staff if that is what it takes to get our plane in the air!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/12/2014 12:57

Of cours Tits, I'm compiling my spreadsheet of orders right now Xmas Grin

On behalf of all Xmas day parkrunners, please can we have no snow until 10:30 on Xmas day Grin. A dry, bright start would be perfect.

mankyscotslass · 05/12/2014 13:43

About an hour ago we had a hail storm that then turned into sleet!

Just west of the Pennines.

PacificDogwood · 05/12/2014 13:45

I just started a thread in chat, my first snow of the year fell this morning but unfortunately only lasted about 2 minutes.

TwentiethCenturyGirl · 05/12/2014 14:12

Shameless place marking. I love a good weather thread. And on that note, I'm off to do a little snow dance Xmas Smile

SantyClaws · 05/12/2014 14:19

We're getting a Chinook wind over the weekend and will warm up to +8 next week.... No more snow for us for a little while

GloriaSmud · 05/12/2014 16:26

DH's spending the day visiting bits of the Peak District and rang about 2.20pm to say that he'd driven through a sleet shower.
For when the snow really starts, I like going to uksnow to see what's happening in the rest of the country.

hoochymama1 · 05/12/2014 16:41
