Well, the moment has come

The 19th December - when many kids break from school has appeared in the GFS charts.....

I'm going to do my best to update this at least once each day, but bear with me if life interferes a bit. My usual disclaimer: I'm only an amateur and I get things wrong. I dont say this out of false modesty but because its true and for important forecasts and for making decisions please refer to the met office.

Also at this range the forecast will be complete crap anyway and will change daily. As we get closer to the Christmas holidays other models will come into range and things will start to become more accurate - hopefully!

So:

Friday 19th (GFS) - The day starts off cold with temps around freezing. Some precipitation but it looks to err on the wrong side of frozen (ie not). Europe isnt looking cold for this time of year and so we are looking to our north and north west for the cold at this point.
That's as far as the model goes Xmas Grin but later in the day I would expect it to end up in single fig temps. Might update this on the next model run.

Place marking Grin
We are hoping for a return to snow for this year, last year was the first time since DH moved here in 2003 that there was no snow at all Shock We are in the Lincolnshire Wolds Smile

hoochymama1 · 04/12/2014 22:01

Noooo, the single snowflake has disappeared for Monday in north derbyshireSad

Envy At people in kent, the most snow we had was when we lived there.

But snow must be sooo hard to predict

Thanks for doing this kitten.
Biscuit andBrew to keep you going.

ravenAK · 04/12/2014 22:06

Marking place (would quite like a couple of snow days for Yorkshire next week, if anyone's taking orders).

(Waves to hoochy)

PacificDogwood · 04/12/2014 22:50

There's snow forecast for the Scottish Highlands this weekend, isn't there?
Here otoh, in Central Scottish suburbia the frigging bulbs are poking out of the ground! Shock

I'd love to have a white Christmas or any snow at all as there was NONE last winter. Not good enough, St Peter!

Thank you for the thread, OYBBK, I'll be riveted to it as ever Grin

Fairenuff · 04/12/2014 22:53

Joining the gang. Hoping for lots and lots of lovely snow. Exciting!

TurnOverTheTv · 04/12/2014 23:05

My children are desperate for snow! The keep saying 'Ask the Kitten lady' I obviously quote you far too much in weather situations Grin

TopazRocks · 04/12/2014 23:09

We're a little north of where Pacific is I, and the BBC gives us 2 flakes for PM Sunday. It certainly feels cold enough here. Smile I quite like snow if I don't have to walk far or travel/drive in it. But think even without snow, I'm going to wear my fur lined boots from tomorrow. Brr!

Bartlebee · 04/12/2014 23:32

I love your Christmas thread, OYBBK!

At least it's properly cold this year. I remember arriving home from work last Christmas Eve lunchtime to find my children sitting on a bench in the middle of my entirely flooded garden..

Calmthefeckdown · 04/12/2014 23:38

Aaaaah! OYBBK's Christmas snow thread. Now it's really the countdown to Christmas

IsawMommyFolknSantaClaus · 04/12/2014 23:57

Hmmm, well just send it over Herefordshire then. Don't want anyone else's plans scuppered.... Xmas Wink
Just do it so I can't get out if you wouldn't mind?

Waves to santy

Well, it's warmed up a bit. Which is nice, as my lovely MIL flies in from the UK on Sunday. Currently just after 5pm and -13. The clearer night skies are leading to some good Northern Lights. If you happen to be looking in the right direction and at the right time!

bigbluestars · 05/12/2014 07:02

Really hoping for snao. My niece and her OH arrive from Sydney on the 16th to stay over christmas. She has never been to a cold country in winter or ever seen snow. She is very excited- I really hope it snows. Otherwise she will have to take a trip to Aviemore.

duckbilled · 05/12/2014 07:34

Excited!!!! Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/12/2014 07:37

Morning all :)

Friday 19th (GFS) This morning it shows it as very wet and mild !! The only snow would be over Scottish mountains. What a difference a day makes in Model Land.

Saturday 20th (GFS) Coldish and damp with temps in low single figures away from the SW.

early Sunday 21st (GFS) Cold and damp, snow showers over hills away from the SW

The issue is a very irritating and stubborn Azores high bringing up milder air from the south and low pressures to our north bringing colder air from the north west. We are in the battle ground area so we end up with this no mans land over us with a muddle of influences.
