Well, the moment has come

The 19th December - when many kids break from school has appeared in the GFS charts.....

I'm going to do my best to update this at least once each day, but bear with me if life interferes a bit. My usual disclaimer: I'm only an amateur and I get things wrong. I dont say this out of false modesty but because its true and for important forecasts and for making decisions please refer to the met office.

Also at this range the forecast will be complete crap anyway and will change daily. As we get closer to the Christmas holidays other models will come into range and things will start to become more accurate - hopefully!

So:

Friday 19th (GFS) - The day starts off cold with temps around freezing. Some precipitation but it looks to err on the wrong side of frozen (ie not). Europe isnt looking cold for this time of year and so we are looking to our north and north west for the cold at this point.
That's as far as the model goes Xmas Grin but later in the day I would expect it to end up in single fig temps. Might update this on the next model run.

We're expecting a storm next week, and possible wintry showers/snow (snow is v unusual for here - Outer Hebrides).

Any info on this OYBBK (will you be NCing to Reindeer this year? Or another festive animal?)

Smile

Ooh I'll be watching this thread with my fingers crossed.

Thank you kitten Xmas Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/12/2014 07:49

Ginfox - its on one this thread I've been keeping an eye on it ready to start a thread when the certainty firms up. Will take a look in a few minutes.

I'm going to keep my own name this year because it muddles things a bit when I'm a different name.

Dontpush. I use wetterzentrale

Friday 19th - (GFS) Very similar to today in terms of weather (but not synptics). Relatively mild in the SW, temps in the low single figures for elsewhere. Quite possibly damp and grey.

Saturday 20th (first thing) - (GFS) Wet, temps 5-10C. Quite windy. Thank goodness this is just in fantasy forecasting time!

Ginfox, the storm is still in todays models and so now has its own dedicated thread here

Moose, my DBro is in Canada and it was -19, wind chill -29, in the middle of the day last week!!!

We are going skiing this season (mid term break) for the first time, so we are guaranteed to see snow. But I would really love to get some here too at some stage. (We all have plenty of ski gear that got well christened in the 2 consecutive snowy winters a few years back - it's just never seen the slopes!).

I love the way our whole country grinds to a halt when it snows. We just put on our gear, snowsocks on the car, make sure we have enough for our needs not Armageddon, still go to work and get on with it. In fact, our street has a tradition of holding a BBQ on our Green as soon as it is covered in a blanket of white. But we are a bit nuts in that way (and live next to a French family!!) Wine Xmas Grin

Thanks kitten!

hoochymama1 · 04/12/2014 11:35

Hoo, hoo! bbc weather give us one snowflake for mondayGrin

Cindy34 · 04/12/2014 12:41

Travelling on 20th, so wet is ok as long as no flooding - think had that as a problem last year. Knowing my luck it will be a deep snow day and travel will grind to a halt.

wol1968 · 04/12/2014 13:26

White Christmas in Hampshire? Hmm Unlikely I think. If we can't have snow on Christmas Day I'll settle for a nice clear crisp frosty day. Which might be better for my parents as they'll be driving to ours that day, all being well.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 04/12/2014 13:35

Thanks for this thread Kitten

SantyClaws · 04/12/2014 14:18

Waves to Moose. A comfy -7 this morning in southern AB.

Weather dude on the radio this morning announced Saturday's +5 forecast with the such excitement you'd have thought he was saying "santa's coming" !

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/12/2014 14:50

Will do a proper update tomorrow am, but the latest gfs is doing a little tease for the 20th at present (if you live 'up north')

let it snow let it snow let it snow! (place marking)

IsawMommyFolknSantaClaus · 04/12/2014 18:22

I'd like to put in a request for a Fuck Load of snow on the 13/14th in the Worcester area. Enough to make a person unable to travel to/from there will do it. So I don't have to go there, see?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/12/2014 19:10

I need mine to hang on until the 20th as dh will be travelling. Then it can come in feet and feet and if we can't have a turkey as a result so be it, I'm willing to sacrifice that!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/12/2014 19:11
