Weather warnings for saturday

from the met office

They are very broad based at the moment because as is ever with thunderstorms, you can have all the right conditions for them but actually predicting whether and where they will trigger is a big challenge.

Warning is for torrential rain as a result of thunderstorms which may also bring hail and strong wind.

Disappointed that last night's storms missed us completely (Hampshire). DH and I are now convinced that the "Isle of Wight" effect is really real.

All we want is some rain and some coolth, so even just a bit of a storm would be good.

(But not minimising the effect yesterday's storms had on other people, especially those who lost their homes.)

SweetPeaPods · 19/07/2014 20:41

Is it possible to get thunder without lightning? I can definitely hear thunder but that webpage isn't showing any lightning near me. I thought the storm that was in Northampton would be here by now but looks like it's fizzled out.

Loving this weather and that lightning site is totally addictive!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 21:26

Sweet another cell may be popping up and not picked up yet.

Looks like a weak tornado did hit oxford oxford mail will need to be confirmed by torro members but the picture of the funnel/tornado is quite a good clue if it is confirmed to be genuine.

Thunder and lightning just hitting Norfolk/Suffolk border now

dawndonnaagain · 19/07/2014 22:51

Yes, Emily I too am on the border, sitting in my conservatory watching it. Dd has gone upstairs to film it.

Tansie · 19/07/2014 22:52

So, what happened in Oxfordshire??!

dawndonnaagain · 19/07/2014 22:54

and the rain's just started.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 22:58

It hasn't been confirmed by experts but there is good photographic evidence of a weak tornado hitting part of oxford at around 6:20pm.

wantacatplease · 19/07/2014 23:30

Fun fact for you all: I was there this tornado.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 23:37

You can't leave us dangling like that! We need descriptions, information and anything else you have!

Haha I wasn't sure if this was an ok place to post about it.

I have lived here in the UK for 10 years but I am originally from Texas.

I was 16 at the time, working in a gift shop. We were keeping an eye on the storm as it rolled in as the shop was virtually floor to ceiling windows but none of us knew how bad the warnings were...

all of a sudden a security officer who patrols the shops came running in and told us we needed to go out back to the massive concrete boiler room, basically and the customers in the shop had to come with us...he no sooner said it than the sirens went off...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 23:47

And then what? (Sensible security guard!)

Have pmed you wantacat :)

I had a quick glance outside thinking I'd somehow see the cyclone itself but of course that only happens in the movies! What I remember is it went eerily dark and the trees were blowing sideways, and the noise as we were headed to the back of the shop was weird, like an ever-increasing hum.

Once we were in the boiler room we couldn't hear or see anything. We had to stay for maybe 20 minutes or so.

When we were able to come back out it was surreal looking outside. The sky was green, like dark green, an unnatural green and of course debris and carnage everywhere. It wasn't til the morning we could really see
the damage to the tall buildings in downtown Fort Worth.

One building had its side completely blown off but inside was nearly, perfectly preserved offices except for
paper strewn everywhere.

I wish i could give you a more adventurous tale but that's it I'm afraid!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2014 00:06

Oh my goodness. That is enough adventure for one person. I'm glad you had good shelter.

wantacatplease · 20/07/2014 00:16

Me too! My parents were home so they had to do the typical duck down in a room with no windows thing we were always taught. I'm quite lucky I missed the drama of all that. The boiler room was made of concrete so we
could barely hear anything, just the faint sound of the sirens and rain.

Mckayz · 20/07/2014 03:30

That's an incredible story wantacat!

It seems we might be getting our storm. There's been a few flashes. Though it's not showing up on the map. It's quite far away though as the thunder is very faint.

Valpollicella · 20/07/2014 03:52

we waited and waited but no stormv (London ish)

It's so horrible here I have just woken again. outside is fresh but no "air" inside. no breeze. Ugh.

Was tracking the storms earlier. convinced and looking forward to seeing one but nowt Sad
