from the met office

They are very broad based at the moment because as is ever with thunderstorms, you can have all the right conditions for them but actually predicting whether and where they will trigger is a big challenge.

Warning is for torrential rain as a result of thunderstorms which may also bring hail and strong wind.

is any of this headed my way, does anyone know? It's bloody boiling here (West Hertfordshire) and we really could do with rain! We're not THAT far from Oxford.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 18:43

lightning detector gives good location of current storms :)

seems to be going NE ish. looks like northampton is in line. still watching though.

FelixFelix · 19/07/2014 18:45

Kitten I've followed a few of your weather threads but have only been on MN less than a year. Do you mind me asking what you do? I'm guessing you have a weather related job Grin

lovestea · 19/07/2014 18:46

Kitten, please, what is a hook and echo signature? The hail was pea sized. The rain came down in torrents. All my flowers are smashed! Sob. The lightening was all over the place!

Mckayz · 19/07/2014 18:47

From looking at the lightning maps it seems to be heading in our direction!

JillJ72 · 19/07/2014 18:51

Interesting but not wildly exciting! Cumnimb building up above, lower layer of darker cloud moving more quickly below. Looking at lightning radar, looks like it may arrive more towards north side of Milton Keynes, and if so we may be able to enjoy the lightning display from a distance (lightning's not my favourite and my best, but these storms have been quite incredible to watch (with eyes squinting to reduce the "aargh lightning" effect!!)).

Firs photo looking west. Second photo looking southwest.

Felixstowe, I'm just an amateur but storms are a particular interest. Go to various conferences and what not.

hook echo am typing one fingered as eating fish and chips at same time.

Kitten that is impressive!

JillJ72 · 19/07/2014 19:05

Wow have you seen Paris and North on the lightning detector?

FelixFelix · 19/07/2014 19:07

Jill I've just looked now Shock Its moving towards us!

ShineSmile · 19/07/2014 19:07

Kitten, when is this heat wave going to end? It is too too hot Sad

laracroft2001 · 19/07/2014 19:10

Hello

I often read the posts on this board but rarely post. Am always looking out for Kittens posts!

But... That lightning page is sooooo bloody addictive!!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 19:11

It looks as if the heat may build again this week. I've not looked very closely, been a bit preoccupied with the storm set up!

Felix guessing you're meaning UK - heading to Towcester and then Northampton.

The air is very still here, very warm, supremely muggy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 19:12

Stupid autocorrect with Felixstowe Grin

Katinkka · 19/07/2014 19:13

Looks to be one hell of a storm over France and that smaller one heading to me in Hull. I love storms until it knocks out the internet

tenderbuttons · 19/07/2014 19:16

I agree, that storm N of Paris is enormous. not that the lightning strike website has eaten my entire day or anything

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 19:22

Rinse and repeat of last night I wonder?

OP posts:
Mckayz · 19/07/2014 19:26

That lightning website is really addictive.

I've enrolled on an open university science degree and I really hope it will have some weather stuff to do.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 19:30

mckayz, there is or was a pretty good weather module which gives some good basics.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2014 19:33

Bah humbug, they've changed it to non credit giving here shame. It also gave a decent discount to being a Royal Met society member with their very good Weather magazine.

FelixFelix · 19/07/2014 19:42
