Weather warnings for saturday

from the met office

They are very broad based at the moment because as is ever with thunderstorms, you can have all the right conditions for them but actually predicting whether and where they will trigger is a big challenge.

Warning is for torrential rain as a result of thunderstorms which may also bring hail and strong wind.

Woke up at midnight but no rain or storm and couldn't get back to sleep. At 2 am I took a light sedative which did the trick but feel rather fragile atm.
18 degrees outside but it's the mugginess indoors which is the killer.
Oh well, out for dog walk in a mo.Sky is mostly blue.

That lack of sleep doesn't sound great digerd, I hope you are ok.

I was up from 1 until about 430. It's too muggy here to sleep. Our 'storm' was 4 flashes and 2 rumbles of thunder.

That wasn't very useful was it?!
I was deeply asleep having a lovely dream about owning a very cool zoo when my neighbours woke me up :(

Dog walk at 6am was fine and then back home had windows and patio door open since then.

What were your neighbours doing to wake you up? - curious nosy face.

Another one who's had a bad night but mine was down to a wretched cold and sinusitis. (A cold in summer ~ why, just why?!) Warm, humid and 23.3C here.

OYBBK ~ think you mentioned a possible funnel cloud over Coalville way yesterday, I found on youtube. After seeing the churning clouds above our house yesterday, (if the film is of a funnel cloud), I'm not surprised it might have produced something!

Well, despite the fact that it rumbled on for a good couple of hours here, I've been out of the shower for 20 minutes and I am need of another! Still, Kitten's warning looks good for me, it may be a bit cooler tonight if we get there.
Dd went to Latitude yesterday (up the road from here) and said that the lightning was incredible, although she did get a tad wet: read drenched! Grin

That's a funnel cloud Gloria, you can see it rotating :)

Digerd neighbours were shouting at their kids outside. They don't seem to realise that most of aren't awake at that time.

OYBBK - we're off to the Anniversary Games at Horse Guards Parade this evening. The forecast says rain there, although not here where I am in Surrey. Do we really need to bother with rainwear?! The thought of putting on a waterproof in this heat is a bit yuck.

Ooo an OYBBK weather thread, love them!

Dont know if you are around, but I've got a question - we are supposed to be going to an outdoor event this afternoon in Nottingham. The Met Office site says the weather will be awful, lots of rain all afternoon. But the Weather Channel and Accuweather give a completely different foreceast - in fact the Weather Channel says 0% chance of precipitation.

How can they be so different and is there any way of working out which is likely to be more accurate? Hope you dont mind me asking Smile

I'm about for a little bit then I won't be around very much in the day time for a few days.

lightning map shows very little at the moment. What a difference a day makes.

folly, it all depends on whether any storms form. If they do they could be torrential. If they don't you will be dry. I'm afraid I can't be more helpful. At the moment it looks like the odd one might be starting to pop up.

Schilke, you might catch something, but if I were you I'd wear quick drying clothes and take an umbrella and not worry about it too much.

Thanks. I think we might just go for the get wet option! It might be a nice relief to have a small shower....fingers crossed it's not an unexpected downpour Grin

That would be a pain! But a good choice I think. Who wants to carry coats and stuff around?

I am off to a garden party in North Norfolk. Fingers crossed!

Report
dawndonnaagain · 20/07/2014 15:22

Well, I am soaked. We didn't get to the garden party, I have never seen rain like it. We got as far as dropping ds off at a friend's house and then it poured, monsoon like. We run the 2 metres up the drive and in that time even our undies were soaked. At one point you couldn't tell where pavement ended and road began, and the thunder was literally (and I really do mean literally) shaking the house.

The two worst storms I have ever experienced were in East anglia. One was in Bury St Edmunds, and the other was near Sandringham. I've also experienced my hottest UK days there too.

My parents are on hols in SW France. A storm at midnight saw rain pouting through the door and down the bedroom walls of their gîte!! They woke to blue skies. Hopefully all's ok!

I don't think the rain was pouting as in sulking, I think it was pouring as in with glee.

Torrential monsoon like rain just started in east London. No lightning though.
