I think the rainfall situation is starting to get quite concerning. Down here we've had very little rainfall for the past two months and there is nothing substantial that I can see for the coming week (maybe next weekend?.....) It is the same across many central and south western areas too.

see environment agency report

In my own garden a lot of plants are showing signs of lack of water - some already losing leaves! We've had a number of fires locally too. I love this weather but its not how it should be!

Beautiful smell of fresh rain here in Wiltshire - DH thinks I am nuts for wanting for it.

Meglet · 07/05/2011 08:48

Rain, pah Sad. Stuck in the house.

But my water butt is full up for the first time in weeks.

Mirage · 07/05/2011 08:56

Slight rain overnight in Leics-not enough though.

The person down the lane from me decided in the week,to burn a load of wood in his field.Unsurprisingly, the grass caught fire and the fire was headed for the tree line.He had to fell one tree to stop it spreading and the surrounding ones are singed. How dim can you get?

ProfYaffle · 07/05/2011 09:01

Still no rain in Norfolk Sad Really hoping we get some as forecast tonight I've got seedlings desperate to go in at the allotment but can't smash my way through the soil.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2011 09:23

oh gosh Profyaffle - think you should do.
Mirage - what a silly silly person!

have had 9.5mm so far. Unsurprisingly roads are struggling a bit as its running straight off. Never rains but it pours eh?

Yes very slight rain here (Hinckley) overnight and a tiny bit this morning. Nowhere near enough. Very let down by promise of thunderstorms that never happened - a fair few flashes of very, very distant sheet lightning but nothing like a proper storm. Meh.

74750447 · 07/05/2011 22:50

Shock at the puddles outside of tesco tonight, was up to my ankles.
Thunder and lightning for a few minutes, other than that it's quietened down to a bit of rain
the grass must be thankful, the brown patches especially :o

Ponders · 07/05/2011 22:55

I'm in Lancs, we've had a few light rainfalls in the last couple of days but just had a very satisfying downpour for 30 mins or so

If it went on for days & days I would be moaning about it of course

[no pleasing some people] Wink

ProfYaffle · 08/05/2011 07:17

We had a small amount of rain over night (I was dreaming of puddles so must have heard it in my sleep!) but nowhere near enough, hope we get some more over the next few days.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/05/2011 07:25

Well our koi pond is two inches deeper this morning (which since it's 20 x 20 feet means it must have rained a lot overnight.:)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2011 08:41

12mm for us. The met office did issue warnings for heavy rain late in the evening (but wasnt on the pc then!)
lubey - storms can never be promised I'm afraid - it takes a lot of things to come together to produce them. We were very close last night but I think they were killed off by a dry air slot. (might be wrong on that - I'm lurking in weather forums to see any discussion that emerges)

bbc report on the effect (or otherwise) of the weekends rain on the fires. Seems to have had very little effect in Berkshire and Lancashire.

Al0uiseG · 08/05/2011 08:54

A few drops, that's all!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2011 10:03

oh dear aL0uise.
Have to say, for the SE it does look predominantly dry for the rest of the week. In fact right across the UK the picture is one of showers rather than rain and as ever the nature of showers some may miss out entirely.

OP posts:
ProfYaffle · 08/05/2011 10:06

Very true kitten. I'm glued to www.raintoday.co.uk which shows all the showers doing a little shimmy around our town and missing us out altogether.

Ponders · 08/05/2011 11:19

oh I do like that site, ProfYaff, thanks Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2011 12:16

raintoday are a great organisation :) they've got very good mobile apps too - the one weather app I'd rate as worth paying for.

brambleschooks · 08/05/2011 16:09

Torrential rain and wind in between bright sunshine. A bit of everything today.

ProfYaffle · 08/05/2011 18:14

I got it from one of Kitten's old threads Smile Still no rain here, I'll be getting the pick axe out tomorrow to dig a trench for my seedlings (seriously)

Mirage · 08/05/2011 19:24

Not enough rain here in Leics I'm afraid. It rained overnight but not very much,my water tank had about 2cm more in it when I checked this morning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2011 11:57

Unsettled would be a good description for the north (and perhaps at times in parts of the Midlands) for this week. Mixture of sunshine, showers, sometimes heavy and quite convective. Pretty dry in the south with probably only occasional light showers mid week.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 14/05/2011 22:29

well we have certainly had our share of heavy showers over the last few days, but it dries up really quickly.

I'm not sure how it will imprpve water levels here.

But I have got VERY wet every time I visit DM in hospital. It seems to wait for visiting time, then the heavens open. Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/05/2011 22:35

Thats rather typical!
nothing down here since last weekend. We had 2 drops this afternoon with some distant rumbles of thunder and that was it! Didnt even record a trace.Theres nothing really in the forecast at all in sight. In fact some models are showing it getting stupidly hot in a weeks time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/05/2011 22:36

(btw I hope your mum is ok?)

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 15/05/2011 09:21

Thanks OYBBK, she had a fall at ours, she has broken her arm, cracker her pelvis in 3 places and also cracked her sacrum vertebrae.

She has bone densityissues caused by long term use of steroids to control her Lupus. Sad

She is out of hospital and in a care home now until she is more mobile. She is not a happy bunny!

Skies are grey here, looks like more rain. The privet hedges seem to have grown over night!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/05/2011 12:36

oh blimey manky - thats a bit brutal - your poor Mum :( must have been really scary for you. I hope she recovers quickly.
