Was King Charles wrong to take a rose from Charles Spencer's bouquet?

Charles Spencer says as Diana's coffin was lowered into the ground, several people there dropped flowers on the coffin. King Charles took a rose from Charles Spencers bouquet and dropped it on Diana's coffin.

This struck me as it shows a very casual disregard for other people's feelings. This was Charles Spencers flowers, but without a thought, king Charles took mine of the flowers. And remember relationships were extremely strained between the two men.

Sometimes I think the smallest incidents like this can reveal someone's true character. It's like someone being rude to a waiter. The king just acts like no one else matters except what he wants.

The royals wanted Diana's funeral to be a private one and said so publicly. It was the public reaction that changed that. Diana's funeral was not a state funeral.

The Spencers wanted the public funeral. But Diana's mother wanted to see Diana's body and the king refused permission for this. Permission he had no legal rights to give or deny.

You do know a mother privately viewing her daughter's body is very different from an open coffin at a funeral? I am not sure why you are muddling the two.

If he had "no legal right" why wasn't this challenged?

I imagine he was there to support William and Harry.

I don't really care that much about the rose story but actually why did he throw a rose on the coffin if he didn't have one? He was there to support the boys so if they had a rose each then that should surely have been enough? I presume her family would have been given a rose to throw into the grave and her family at the time were her birth family and her children. Maybe they missed him out deliberately so he took a rose and did it anyway. Both of them in this scenario sound a bit petty.

She would have to gone to court in the short 24 hour five days between the body being returned to the UK and the public funeral. I don't know why she didn't go to the courts, but I can guess why a mother whose daughter has tragically died in a car crash did not start a court case to view her daughter's body within five days.

Who knows. It just gets more and more petty.

I can understand Charles being at his ex-wife’s funeral but I’m not sure he should’ve been at her private burial at all, let alone centre stage and throwing a rose on her coffin.

Much as I can’t stand KC, I think being there for his young sons was the right thing to do. I’ve been separated from my kids’ dad for 10 years and would go with them to his funeral. For their sake.

I agree, he was trying to support his sons.

Quite apart from the flower debacle, the AMW debacle has shown all our institutions (courts, Parliament) to have failed to fulfil their constitutional role in keeping the Monarchy in check. They do not say no to the Monarchy.

Livelovebehappy · Today 11:30

I think both men have zero moral compasses, as is the case with many self entitled ultra wealthy individuals. I can believe it might have happened, but maybe context is needed, as it could have been a mis understanding as to who the flowers belonged to. I think Charles Spencer has been so consumed with hatred for the RF since Diana’s death, that some of his memories may have become distorted over time. But I also can imagine Charles saying and doing some of the stuff Spencer says he did.

What next, KC having a second piece of cake at a luncheon in her memory and putting a glass down on a table without a coaster ?

Is there no end to KC’s cruelty to Charles Spencer 🤣

Sad little man

Jesus, what am I reading?
@OneLilacHedgehogGot any more ridiculous grievances to air on here?
I think you need to get out more. Or at least find something more exciting to do in the early hours of the morning.

It really is getting to the realms of ……30 years ago Charles w …walked past and gave me a funny look …..am I right in thinking this is gasp worthy wrong ?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · Today 11:33

The heartbreaking thing is that I'm not sure Diana herself would have approved of the inclusion of this detail, yet I can't judge a grieving brother for being cut to the quick by an action that outsiders might find petty.

I like to think of Diana laughing at the random man in the background saying 'Please ignore me – I am a tree!' in the middle of it all. Perhaps he should be tracked down to find out if plant protocol was followed or not. Poor Diana.

We may be on the brink of WW3, not to mention the rise of extremist politics, the COL, the not-so small boats, climate crisis etc etc. And this is what people are obsessing about.

Tryagain26 · Today 11:34

Why are people still talking and arguing about something that happened 30 years ago?

😂😂 I heard that KC once helped himself to a cup of tea before Spencer got served his!

jeffgoldblum · Today 11:35

So then why did they agree to KC making the arrangements and having the final say?
Surely, if they had wanted to go against KC's arrangements, they could have done so if that was Diana's wishes and backed up by law?

I imagine they wanted kc to pocket the bill for such a large funeral!

Because it was decided that it should be a state funeral. The public feeling at the time was against it being treated as a private matter (the Queen’s first instinct).

It was a state funeral and the government and Royal Household bore the vast majority of the costs (about £3m)

As for Frances Shand-Kidd viewing her daughter’s body. Preventing that was no doubt a felt to be a kindness, she was terribly injured and an open coffin was probably not appropriate.

And that’s saying something.😁

I cannot believe the OP has made a thread about KC showing a very casual disregard for other people's feelings, taken from a book written by someone who has a complete disregard for other people’s feelings! 🙄

Ok, thanks. I wondered if it was to do with the RF paying for it.

But the royals did not pay for the funeral. It was not a state funeral. The British government paid.
The royals only paid for the costs within Westminster abbey. That was flowers, royal family transport costs, their staff salaries who were involved e.g. sorting out royal family members clothes and details of funeral they were involved in.
The Spencers family and her estate paid for the private family service, her burial costs and the memorial.

So the royal family paid for very little.

What next? ….they actually had Diana’s real funeral 3 days previously….this was just a spectacle for the masses!

spreadandsprinkles · Today 11:44

Frances Shand Kidd did not seem to have much contact with Diana when she was alive.
