Was King Charles wrong to take a rose from Charles Spencer's bouquet?

Charles Spencer says as Diana's coffin was lowered into the ground, several people there dropped flowers on the coffin. King Charles took a rose from Charles Spencers bouquet and dropped it on Diana's coffin.

This struck me as it shows a very casual disregard for other people's feelings. This was Charles Spencers flowers, but without a thought, king Charles took mine of the flowers. And remember relationships were extremely strained between the two men.

Sometimes I think the smallest incidents like this can reveal someone's true character. It's like someone being rude to a waiter. The king just acts like no one else matters except what he wants.

You are very confident in your assertions about what happened, aren't you?

If I still held a grudge after 30years, I'd consider I was the problem and get some help for it. I've got various people against who I could hold grudges because of their treatment of me (hello ex-husband, looking at you) but I don't; because I've consciously decided not to, because it's a waste of my life and also because hanging onto resentment and expecting the other person to care after 30 years is not conducive to leading a happy life.

But then I don't have a book to sell.

This ⬆️. It's damaging, destructive and it helps no-one. If Nelson Mandela can come out of Robben Island prepared to talk to his captors, I'm sure Spencer can try to get past this.

Not if his book sales and bottom line depend on his not getting past it.

Fair point!

Maybe if your sister had died young and people like her ex husband kept telling lies about her, you too would hold a grudge?

Spencer was horrible to his sister while she was alive. We saw the letters.

What on earth has KC said about her since her death? Nothing.

TheOvertGardener · 02/10/2026 11:08

I’ve been at funerals where everyone takes a flower from one arrangement and lays it on the casket. Also been at funerals where the ladies each take a flower from an arrangement home.

Looks like the BP statement about grief clouding memory and judgement was spot on.
Spencer should focus on his relationships with the living.

Totally. Imagine dredging this non story up from 29 years ago and imagine @OneLilacHedgehog thinking it would look bad for KC.

I really can’t imagine the gall of him writing a book about his sister. Are her other family members just staying quiet about it?

Edited

They are remaining quiet, although there is a claim that they are unhappy about it (unsubstantiated).

MadeInGrimsby · 02/10/2026 13:01

I fact, the book isn't really about Diana, it's about Charles Spencer. Or rather his eulogy, which he presents as some extraordinary historical event.

At DM's funeral a close friend of hers (who probably saw more of her than I did as she was in Australia and I was in the UK) asked if she could lay some flowers on the coffin. I said without even having to think about it that of course she could, it gave her comfort and an acknowledgement of their friendship.

To obsess (using a favourite word on here) about a flower 30 years later really says a lot about CS. Not much of it good.

He wasn’t even speaking to her. There is no reason to think their relationship would have been repaired over the years.

I watched his interview with Tina Brown and he seems to have backtracked on his comments about protecting William and Harry. “Oh I’m just their elderly uncle.” Isn’t he only 60? Reminded me of that character in Bleak House, taking no responsibility.

Especially a man with many damaged relationships, such as he has!

Harold Skimpole? Always a child, wasn't he?

True, "I know lots about the King that I haven't said"

"No, I'm just saying it"
So unworldly, so innocent!

Yep. When Diana died it had been 5 years and 8 months since their separation had been publicly announced. And 3 years and 8 months since their divorce had been finalised.

I thought that Diana's decree absolute finalised her divorce on August 28th 1996 - pretty much 12 months before her death on August 31st 1997?

I wonder how long it had been since he had a harmonious relationship with his sister. I’m sure no one on Team Spencer will be along to share that, though.

Many years, I suspect. He was still at boarding school when she got married. In the last 5 years of her life, they were rarely in touch, according to Diana herself.

OneLilacHedgehog · 02/10/2026 18:33

Team Spencer is childish.
People saying they believe what Charles Spencer have said think he is telling the truth. And for me the kings statement simply confirmed that Spencer is telling the truth.

I don’t think it’s very nice of you to call a whole group of people childish, even if they do side with a guy simply to side against the king because they like Meghan’s earrings.

It’s been known foe decades that Hes a horrible man, hasn’t it?

I assume the proceeds from the book will go to one of Diana’s charities? Let’s hope so!

Otherwise it does look like a very mucky money-grabbing business.
