Is there any more to be said. I expect there probably is. So I started a new thread. Be interesting to see what their next move is. It's like a game of chess A we getting clarification. I want to know if they'll be doing walkabouts, hospital visits, and so on. Being greeted by dignitaries at home and overseas like they were on their visit to NY and Australia.

i now see Meghan is going to do charity work, last I heard she was going back to acting and was “having talks about her role”. Always seems to be having “talks” about different things but it goes no further????

I realise I am not clear on what constitutes a spare. Now, William is the heir, obviously. Options for the spare: George, because he is the next in line; Charlotte, because William and George are the next in the direct line ie first borns; Harry, because George us a minor.

So it 's everything to do with the direct line and nothing to do with having reached adulthood. Is that right, @IcedPurple ?

There's no official definition of 'spare' so I guess it's up to anyone to define it!

To me, George is not the 'spare' because he is next in direct line. Harry may at one point have been 3rd in line but he was always going to get pushed down once William started having children. That won't happen with George, so to me he isn't the 'spare'. It's a silly term anyway!

The spare is the person who becomes monarch If something happens to the monarch and there is no child next in line. So prior to having kids, Harry was the spare so if anything happened to William he would have been king.

bit like when Edward abdicated and George took over, George was the spare. He was his brother and Edward had no kids.

right now the spare is Charlotte, if George couldn’t be king, ie he dies or fucks off, she would be queen. Once George has kids, it will be the sibling to the first born,

if William died, and Charles, George would be made monarch, but he would habe a regency until he reached adult hood. Ie an adult, which I think should be andrew as the oldest son but an act of parliament would likely make it Anne or Edward.

It is about the Monarch having at least two children, so that his/her children inherit the title and it doesn't go back up the line and sideways.

W was Charles' heir, H was his spare. W has procreated so the title gets inherited down the line, and Charles' heir is now redundant

W, in the same position, has George as his heir and Charlotte as his spare.

ETA it isn't just the Monarch, it is a term used for the second son of all titled men.

I think the regent should be Catherine.
We can’t use Andrew for obvious reasons and although Anne and Edward are popular Catherine is far more so than either of them.
Harry is out of the question before anyone asks!
I’m not suggesting that Catherine should rule as Queen in her own right (she doesn’t share the royal bloodline - and if that doesn’t matter then what is the actual point of the royal family?)
However, she could stand as regent for the short time until George came of age - he will be 18 in five years time after all.

It’s just a turn of phrase, from thr late 1800s. The heir and spare is the full term. It means royals and aristocrats have one kid who will be the successor and one who is the back up. It wasn’t designed for Harry.

She can be, it's up to Parliament. Princess Margaret was the legal regent for Charles, but it was changed to give it to Prince Philip.
