I admired the Queen and would have considered myself a monarchist but i really dislike Charles. He's associated with too many corrupt people and I think Camilla is a player. I enjoyed the bands and horses but the ceremony reminded me of a Monty Python sketch. There are so many amazing and talented people in this country including David Attenborough, The Beatles etc but we use this mediocre bunch as our figureheads.

sezzer87 · 04/09/2023 15:22

Couldn't care less about it. Pointless.
Loved the queen though.

Comedycook · 04/09/2023 15:25

I'm not a fan of the royal family but I dread to think who this nation would elect as a head of state....President Blair or Johnson!!?

SallyWD · 04/09/2023 15:33

I'm completely indifferent really. Don't feel strongly about him either way.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 04/09/2023 15:38

Too old (and I’m in the same decade of my life so I’m allowed to say that), and he is an old fashioned old man. ( Also a very mean spirited one IMHO). How on earth is he going to do the foreign tours and the late night receptions? Camilla looks knackered by lunchtime.

SapatSea · 04/09/2023 15:41

It's obscene to have them in this day and age. Time to end it.

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 04/09/2023 15:46

Completely outdated system that isn't needed.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 04/09/2023 15:47

I couldn’t care less about them. They could disappear and I don’t think I’d notice.

I never understand this logic. Okay Johnson wasn't our President and so not our HoS, but he was still our representative on the world stage FFS; I'm not less embarrassed of him because he wasn't on the coins. The problem isn't that we would have had someone like that as a HoS, but the fact that we as a nation could let anyone like that anywhere near power.

justanotherparrot · 04/09/2023 15:58

An outdated institution

WinnieTheW0rm · 04/09/2023 15:59

I still support the institution.

And also watching to see what KC does about slimming down.

(The Scandinavians and the Dutch are hardly failed/outdated models)

Greenshake · 04/09/2023 16:01

I would much rather Charles and Camilla than William and Kate. I think Camilla is fabulous 🙂

Batatahara · 04/09/2023 16:01

I've always been a republican but I have some respect for Charles who does come across as thoughtful and who has tried to do something to support the causes he cares about.

William and Kate, I have no time for. They seem to be all about having a lovely life on the taxpayer

Roussette · 04/09/2023 16:11

Fed up with them.

There's no slimming down, there never was going to be, it was just a lie spoonfed to us.

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 16:14

3 posts in and we already have the utterly bizarre “who will we get instead, President Blair?” argument.

We will get who we VOTE for and Blair would be a million times better than Charles because when we don’t want him anymore we VOTE him out rather than just churning through the next mediocre entitled offspring.

🙄

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 16:15

@Batatahara but he doesn’t really does he? The issues he “pretends” to care about like the environment while flying around in private jets and taking 40 min helicopter flights that could have been done by train. He’s a staggering hypocrite.

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 16:17

@WinnieTheW0rm we couldn’t be further from the Dutch model if we tried! They’ll be no slimming down - that was a nonsense lie. He pretends to reduce costs in public while stuffing his wallet in private.

Yes he is a hypocrite about it at times but he was raising awareness of the issue well ahead of when it was commonly discussed. I think he does have some genuinely held views on it.

I still don't want him to be my head of state but I would be interested to chat to him.

William and Kate, especially Kate, have done or said absolutely nothing that suggests they give a shit about anything other than themselves and their children. I had the opportunity to meet them actually and said no because I have no interest in what they have to say, I would much rather chat to almost anyone

People often say this but why would it have to be? Why not Floella Benjamin? Professor Brian Cox? Prof Jim Al-Khalili? Prof Dame Mary Beard?

A President would be a strong, presentable figurehead who represents the best of the nation and is intelligent enough to understand geo-politics and diplomacy. And a bit of etiquette.

They don't have to be a populist former politician. We are not the USA. Or indeed many other European countries.

We can forge our own path without a hereditary monarch as head of state.

AuntieMarys · 04/09/2023 16:22

I'm a member of Republic

AgnesX · 04/09/2023 16:24

Totally indifferent. In the great scheme of things he's not a bad man, in as much as he's not in a position to have much power.

Anyway he's quite old and won't be around for that long.

Cheguevarahamster · 04/09/2023 16:27

Outdated, a complete anachronism in a country that purports to be democratic. It should be abolished.

saveforthat · 04/09/2023 16:27

I was just saying the other day that we haven't seen much of him at all since he became king. I can't believe it's a year.

Roussette · 04/09/2023 16:27

Much as I am really not a Monarchist, I do agree with this. He had his green and eco credentials to build on from decades ago and I think he blew it. He has really disappointed me, I was expecting so much more from him.
Not daft waffle about his Aston Martin that runs on wine and cheese and which he probably drives once every other year.
I thought he'd be different but they're all the same
Greedy

Very interesting thread

Nothing will convince me that the Windsors are wanted any more . The polls are bought and paid for . If they were truly sure they are wanted they support a vote on the matter . A simple yes no recorded when voting for MPs

Even the unreliable polls can those the fact that it’s only the over 65s who have a majority in support .

The queen was just always ‘there’ and some might have found her constant presence comforting . She hasn’t left a mark at all though .
Charles - he has a bit of something about him but he’s tired and exudes an aura of ‘be careful what you wish for ‘ . The image of him in his madness of king George nightshirt and his crown on sideways was so ridiculous. It’s not ‘pomp’ - it a Disneyfied desperate nostalgia for the ‘good old days’ 200 years ago .
Wiliam and Kate haven’t got a personality between them, Wiliam esp seems v cold .
They aren’t interested .
They aren’t going to swing the demographics in any way
