I think they are pretty invisible

I think they are pretty invisible

And irrelevant

@WinnieTheW0rm we couldn’t be further from the Dutch model if we tried! They’ll be no slimming down - that was a nonsense lie. He pretends to reduce costs in public while stuffing his wallet in private.

Well, it's minus 2x working royals (quit 2020) with no suggestion anyone else will take on those roles (indeed new CoS appointed to fit who is a working Royal, rather than getting Princess Beatrice to start doing duties)

We'll have to wait and see what else he does - I expect he'll be on the throne for 20 years or so; he doesn't have to do everything in the first year

Batatahara · 04/09/2023 16:34

I don't want a slimmed down monarchy, I don't want one at all. If we have to have one, I don't massively care if it's 10 people or 5

maddiemookins16mum · 04/09/2023 16:37

Loved The Queen, like William and his family. Charles, I’m very meh about. He just seems too tetchy for me.

Hopefully William will be King within 10 years.

minipie · 04/09/2023 16:40

I think the personality of the monarch is irrelevant. The whole point of an inherited monarchy is that it’s luck of draw. You get the eldest child regardless of whether they are any good at the job or not.

This is one of the many reasons I think it should be abolished.

Novella4 · 04/09/2023 16:40

The whole point about the ‘slimmed down ‘ monarchy was that at no point did he say he would take less money from the taxpayer !
In fact , he has had a nice 45% pay increase .

What exactly was the point ? To manipulate people into thinking he will
be different when in fact he will do nothing. More of the same

The arrest of the peaceful protesters at the coronation was a particularly low point .

MultichildrenDad · 04/09/2023 16:43

I was surprised to feel orphaned after the Queen died. I live in Moscow, and signing the book of Condolance was deeply moving, adding a short piece - addressed to her. A chapter closed. Charles is not my King. Camilla is not my Queen. All in all, couldn't give a stuff now.

BadgerB · 04/09/2023 16:45

Autumn Crow
People often say this but why would it have to be? Why not Floella Benjamin? Professor Brian Cox? Prof Jim Al-Khalili? Prof Dame Mary Beard?

Do you think successful, intelligent people like that would WANT to be a figurehead? Would they have to live in Windsor Castle? Would their families have to help?
Would foreign Heads of State be impressed (as they often seem to be by Royal bling)

On the whole I think those who would apply for the post would be more in the "Failed Politian" mould

You are right .

Ive been on these boards too long arguing with royalist sycophants ( who half the time aren’t even in the UK !)

TicTacNicNak · 04/09/2023 16:48

When they mention the queen on the news I still think of Queen Elizabeth and feel shocked when I realise they're referring to Camilla.

I agree with your first paragraph - but that is the reason I think it should be kept!

That, and the history, the uniqueness of the British Monarchy. They mostly try their best
And, yes, they are very rich. They would still be very rich if they were private individuals

CPLawyer · 04/09/2023 16:52

Dislike the RF but prefer C&C to W&K who come across came and phoney. At least Charles and Camilla don't pretend to be charming. They're unapologetically themselves. I also happen to think Camilla dresses quite well despite the fact I don't think she is particularly attractive and I am more than half her age 😅 Not sure how I feel about the fact that her multitude of designer bags are likely at the expense of us tax payers.

Me too.

Also when they say the Princess of Wales, I think Diana first then realise they mean Kate. Ditto Prince of Wales, I think Charles them realise they mean William.

I'm not a fan of the royal family but I dread to think who this nation would elect as a head of state....President Blair or Johnson!!?

It's a damned sight easier to get rid of an elected head of state than an unelected hereditary bunch of buffoons. I have never been pro-monarchy but I could at least respect the fact that the Queen was a product of her time and a country still struggling to emerge from war and poverty. I don't believe she did anything special, but people believed that she stood for something I guess. And longevity made it her an institution rather than the symbol of the country.

But what she stood for, in the end, was unfettered and archaic privilege. This is 2023, not 1823. It's time for them to go. Not because of who they are - I don't give a damn about how "likeable" they may or may not be. Because of what they are and what they represent.

skippy67 · 04/09/2023 16:58

If they were to disappear tomorrow, it would make no difference at all to my life. Or anyone else's despite what royal "experts" and "commentators" would have is believe.

derxa · 04/09/2023 17:02

With Sir Keir Starmer coming into power, there will be no abolition in the foreseeable future

ChaToilLeam · 04/09/2023 17:04

Just abolish it. Floella Benjamin for President!

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 17:05

@BadgerB ”try their best”? In what way? Define try their best? They don’t have to try and do anything and if it’s their best - well I’m utterly underwhelmed.

WellThisIsFun1 · 04/09/2023 17:05

I don't really feel he's done anything, has he completed any engagements, state visits???

Perhaps I just haven't seen the news on those days if he has, but I feel he's done diddly squat over the past 12 months.

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 17:06

@ChaToilLeam ooh good choice 😄❤️

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 17:07

@Ascendant15 absolutely.

so lacking in imagination. Look what other countries do: it's a figurehead not an executive.

How about Floella Benjamin? Doreen Lawrence? Tanni Grey Thompson?

Wheresthebloomingsummersunshine · 04/09/2023 17:10

Has KC3 got a pulse?

I second Floella B for President - she's awesome!

Brefugee · 04/09/2023 17:14

i hadn't realised so many people would be for that! i've been suggesting either her or Tani Grey Thompson for years!
