I'd vote them out in a hot second.

Riapia · 04/09/2023 18:28

So long as he stays in his palace and maintains a low profile, only appearing for special occasions I’m all in favour.
He just needs to keep his mouth shut and wave at the right time.
It’s the alternative of having a president that fills me with horror.
When given the opportunity to choose a leader people aren’t known for making a wise decision.
Take a look at some of the president’s in various other countries.

ThePoshUns · 04/09/2023 18:29

Charles hasn't really done much.
The talk of slimming down hasn't materialised and his apparent allowing of Andrew back into the fold is a mistake and for me a nail in the coffin

Agree Boris was a terrible choice he was the other end of Trumps arsehole.

@Riapia thats such a sad outlook. What we need is good political education and critical thinking in schools. This current government won’t ever contenance the idea because the peasants would be horrified if they knew the way they behaved. With good political education and a sound constitution we could make proper grown up decisions about our leader.

Is Charles, an elitist hypocrite, the best we can expect from our leaders?

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 18:59

@derxa why the hell does it matter what @seafronty does for a living? What a weird question! I’m a teacher - does that make my Republicanism more or less worthy in your eyes?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/09/2023 19:05

I feel exactly the same about it as I always did. It's an anachronism. The 'But who would we get as head of state?!' comments make no sense. We'd get who we voted for. And they wouldn't be in post for life!

CurlewKate · 04/09/2023 19:12

@Supersimkin2 "Some old Sloaney shagger as Queen is peak cringe."

Yep. Let's blame a woman.

Barbadossunset · 04/09/2023 19:13

seafronty · Today 17:42
Every single person who owns a bit of land with an associated title should have it taken off them and handed to the state

Interesting. Will this land grab be done via an act of Parliament or force? If force, who will be those seizing it?
What will happen to the land? Will it become collective farms like under Stalin (that went well).
How will you prevent people from using their titles? Maybe a Stasi type system whereby family and friends denounce them?

Barbadossunset · 04/09/2023 19:16

Seafronty some more questions:

Is it only titles people who have their landed confiscated? What about untitled landowners who’ve lived in the same estate for years?
If it’s all landowners, how much land can they own before it’s seized? Will they get any compensation?
Sounds like you’d get on well in Zimbabwe.

Think Charles was a bit of a shagger

beeonmybonnett · 04/09/2023 19:17

I wonder how Diana would have been as queen consort? And yes I mean if hypothetically she was still alive and if her and Charles hadn’t divorced.

Comedycook · 04/09/2023 15:25

I'm not a fan of the royal family but I dread to think who this nation would elect as a head of state....President Blair or Johnson!!?

330m people in America and Trump was the best they could come up with…

I’ll stick with Charles over that sort of person any day.

As I said on an another thread, they'll be coming for my wee farm next. What experience do 'the people' have in running an estate like Chatsworth. It's like Communist Russia. Intellectuals being forced to work the land in Communist China. Recent destruction of farming in Zimbabwe etc.

Barbadossunset · 04/09/2023 19:22

None - but it would be worth it to people like Seafronty to see it fall into rack and ruin for the pleasure of booting out the owners.
At places like Chatsworth there’d be excellent looting opportunities. There’s a secret staircase down to a large safe - a room really - there; would it ever be discovered?

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 19:24

@derxa that really is a ridiculous comment - to conflate wanting a democracy and a republic with communist Russia is next level nonsense 🙄.

seafronty · 04/09/2023 19:30

Hiya pal.
I don't want to see it fall in to ruin in the slightest. I just don't want parasitic hereditary privileged land barons to continue their feudal capers.

https://twitter.com/andywightman/status/1696273049232785662?t=BUESNc5cnUbTy2Ya8oV64g&s=19

The crown is the 3rd largest land owner in the UK. Why? How many of them is there? Buckingham Palace had 52 bedrooms. If they are so useful for tourism let's keep them all in the same place and turn Windsor in to an absolutely banging public owned mega hotel. They can't get friends and family discount of they want to stay.

Honestly, consign every single royal parasite to the bin.

Barbadossunset · 04/09/2023 19:33

Seafronty you haven’t answered my question. Will the ‘feudal barons’ have their land taken by force? Who will run the estates?
A vast amount of farmland is owned by overseas owners including those from undemocratic countries in the Middle East. Will they also have their land seized?
Re number of bedrooms: how many bedrooms can a person have before they become ‘parasites’?

Barbadossunset · 04/09/2023 19:34

just don't want parasitic hereditary privileged land barons to continue their feudal capers.

Can you enlarge on these ‘feudal capers’?

Hawkins0009 · 04/09/2023 19:35

with all due respect to all

unless the public have eg a detailed academic level or have studied the royal family in depth to fully understand what the royal family contributes to the country as a whole, then what would be gained from asking the public in general about their views on the royal family when chances are it will be either, like dislike or somewhere in the middle ?

seafronty · 04/09/2023 19:37

Hiya pal. I don't give a shit if I haven't answered your questions. Happy to help. Thanks.

Dabralor · 04/09/2023 19:38

Don't want to get rid of them, because it was be a massive arse to replace it all with something else better.

I would however like to bring them in line with the rest of the public sector:

39hr/week contracts
Performance management
Set days holiday per year
Specific job specification (beyond wearing coat dresses and saying unfunny jokes that the public are obliged to laugh at)

DivingForLove · Today 19:24

@derxa that really is a ridiculous comment - to conflate wanting a democracy and a republic with communist Russia is next level nonsense 🙄

I think Derxa was referring to seafronty’s wish to seize landowners’ property which is what happened in Russia and the Soviet Union

CurlewKate · 04/09/2023 19:45

"What experience do 'the people' have in running an estate like Chatsworth"

Well, those of them who have studied estate management might have a bit of an idea. You don't seriously think Peregrine manages it personally, do you?

minipie · 04/09/2023 19:49

I don’t really understand why we would need to replace the monarchy with a President or similar, if we got rid of them.

I know in theory the monarch acts as a sort of “last resort” check and balance on the government. But frankly it’s been clear for a long time that the monarch won’t intervene. Remember Boris’s completely illegal proroguing of Parliament to avoid discussion of Brexit plans? The Queen went along with that despite it being unlawful.

The supposed “check and balance” from the monarch doesn’t exist. They know their own position is too precarious and relies on being non political.
