I find it hard to believe that a year has gone by. 😱 Time flies.

I actually think Charles is doing OK. The problem may be that he is now elderly, having served the longest apprenticeship in history. I can't see him doing much real modernising. He'll leave that to William and Kate, who are themselves already middle aged.

So modernisation will be a slow process.

I like Camilla and think she is right for Charles in a way that Diana just wasn't.

I'm on the fence about whether or not a Republic with an elected head of state would be better. I've nothing against it in principle, but I am very much a "devil you know" person. The monarchy is the devil I know.

Has KC3 got a pulse?

I second Floella B for President - she's awesome!

Floella is a staunch monarchist.

LubaLuca · 04/09/2023 17:18

I'd sort of forgotten we have a monarchy. I used to have a passing interest in the Queen because I quite liked her, but I've never been interested in the rest of them. So that means I'm less positive about them now.

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 17:19

@derxa she won’t need to be in charge of the abolition, just step in once the role is free 😄

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 17:21

@BadgerB Ireland have had some inspiring Presidents. It’s unlikely to be a celebrity but certainly doesn’t have to be a “failed” politician.

samuelclemens · 04/09/2023 17:21

It just seems a bit weird to me, especially with all the dramas that have gone on over time… they really are just this big dysfunctional family like any other big dysfunctional family. They’re just humans with all their dramas and problems etc. it seems odd having them paraded about, photographed in crowns and whatever, it could be literally anybody. There is nothing special or different about them.

AutumnCrow · 04/09/2023 17:21

Yeah, Floella Benjamin could be the 'continuity candidate' - a seamless transition from monarchy to the modern UK and all that. She accepted a peerage from the Lib Dems whose policy is to the abolish the House of Lords so she's used to handling a bit of cognitive dissonance Grin

YouJustDoYou · 04/09/2023 17:22

meh? At least it's not Migrain and Prince Whinge

What makes you think she would want this? It would be an onerous task and maybe she enjoys her life as it is.

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 17:23

@WinnieTheW0rm the phrase “working Royal” is an utter nonsense as none of them really work. He has no intention of slimming down the monarchy, tomorrow next year or next decade. Why would he? He loves all the pomp and bullshit - the coronation showed that in spades. 🤬

DivingForLove · 04/09/2023 17:24

@derxa i think you’re taking the suggestion a little too seriously 😂. It would obviously be up to individuals to decide if they wanted to stand for election or not.

ThatWriterInTheCorner · 04/09/2023 17:29

I thought the Queen did a good job and served the country well, but I would still prefer to abolish the monarchy. Even if she'd been completely mediocre (as I suspect Charles will be), we'd still have been stuck with her. Also, there was an alarming period of time when we were all one bad polo accident away from having to crown Prince Andrew.

I can see benefits to having an apolitical head of state, but you only get those benefits if the person who gets that role isn't a complete wanker. And hereditary monarchy is not a good way to deliver non-wanker candidate.

No shenanigans with her

Carpediemmakeitcount · 04/09/2023 17:38

Don't care they are benefit scroungers we pay for everything they have and we can't get a decent healthcare system or education. They have the best care, food and education etc from us. We are mugging ourselves off.

seafronty · 04/09/2023 17:42

Every single person who owns a bit of land with an associated title should have it taken off them and handed to the state. They've benefitted from the privilege for years. Time to work now peeps. Every single member of the Royal Family needs to be stripped of all titles and privilege and paid the national living wage by the state until they get themselves a job. That goes for clothes horses and sweaty perverts alike. Let them set up a go fund me and see how many of the Daily Mail frottagers really like dipping in to their pocket. Ditto the house of Lords.

Lollypop701 · 04/09/2023 17:44

I like the royal family as an entity, I like the pomp and history. It’s only been a year and the change from QE is still new.

lots of really rich people preach about climate change and take private jets, tell us to isolate but have parties … Rita Ora anyone? It’s the rich not just royal.

Sorry I’m 50 and I’m keeping them… although the 45% increase was in bad taste. chop off my head now!

rollonretirementfgs · 04/09/2023 17:45

I feel like the monarchy died alongside the queen. Charles seems so insignificant in comparison

Agreed

Carpediemmakeitcount · 04/09/2023 17:51

I was on Tiktok last year out of curiosity and I found myself watching a live. He was American and I posted about the Queen's death and his response was she means differently to the rest of the world and he was speaking about colonialism. It's not a history to be proud of and because of that history has made us weaker. The monarchy don't care as long as we the public pay them.

What do you do?

Cascais · 04/09/2023 17:58

Love it/them

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/09/2023 18:00

Exactly the same way I felt when the late Queen was around - I'd prefer they were gone

CurlewKate · 04/09/2023 18:04

Same as I always have. They are useless, expensive, immoral parasites that perpetuate unearned privilege and are rapidly becoming a laughing stock.

Supersimkin2 · 04/09/2023 18:08

Some old Sloaney shagger as Queen is peak cringe.

Alycidon · 04/09/2023 18:08

The same as I felt a year ago - they are a waste of money and many of them are shameless layabouts (looking at you, Kate).
