The royal family

Why is the Queen commenting on the Roald Dahl controversy?

I thought the Royal Family were supposed to be uncontroversial and unpolitical, so why is the Queen getting involved in this? It is nothing to do with her, she did not have to say anything?

Or have the rules changed and they are now going to be more controversial and political?

The Queen?

Mouthfulofquiz · 24/02/2023 15:51

How is she managing to do that from beyond the grave?

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/02/2023 15:51

Yeah, you know, the woman who's married to the king. She is heavily involved in promoting the benefits of reading for children and is the patron of the BBC's annual short story writing competition, 500 Words.

That is Queen Elizabeth II

garlicandsapphires · 24/02/2023 15:53

Queen Consort you mean.
Just as Philip was not the King.

2013isback · 24/02/2023 15:54

OP means Camilla, I assume. She leads an online book club which held its 2 year anniversary recently and she made a speech encouraging writers to resist censorship - which isn't a particularly controversial or overtly "political" position. As far as I'm aware, though, she didn't mentionDahl.

Do you have a link, OP?

  1. Because she can.
  2. Because she's correct.
SleekMamma · 24/02/2023 15:57

Pussycats has it spot on

ArcaneWireless · 24/02/2023 15:58

Why shouldn’t she say something?

Someone with an agenda could find fault in every book ever written should they feel the need.

All you need is a sticker saying it contains outdated and offensive words, etc and the world can carry on, worrying about things that really do need worrying about.

Manfred Mann should consider updating their song for example. No longer blinded by the light but a whole lot of unnecessary froth.

Nothing political about sticking up for free speech and criticising this utter buffoonery.

Topseyt123 · 24/02/2023 16:00

I don't see why she shouldn't comment. She's right to, in my opinion.

Viviennemary · 24/02/2023 16:00

I must say I also did a double take I thought the Queen?? But of course its Camilla. I think fair enough as she takes an interest in books. Its not really political. IMHO. Just common sense.

quite.

cassiatwenty · 24/02/2023 16:03

Nooooo totally & very different but there's a thread on that already

Totally different. The wife of the King is the Queen (yes, a consort but still the Queen). The husband of a reigning Queen is never the King. When King George VI was alive, the Queen Mother was then referred to as The Queen.

SenecaFallsRedux · 24/02/2023 16:06

News alert! Camilla is The Queen. And her reading club is called The Queen's Reading Room.

Nudity · 24/02/2023 16:07

Queen consort…..let’s get it right shall we?

ScentOfAMemory · 24/02/2023 16:08

She didn't mention Dahl.

OutofEverything · 24/02/2023 16:09

Camilla is the Queen.
Have you not noticed the Consort part has been dropped.

Camille is Queen Consort, sounds about right lol

Samcro · 24/02/2023 16:15
