The royal family

Why is the Queen commenting on the Roald Dahl controversy?

I thought the Royal Family were supposed to be uncontroversial and unpolitical, so why is the Queen getting involved in this? It is nothing to do with her, she did not have to say anything?

Or have the rules changed and they are now going to be more controversial and political?

Lol- maybe google some of the man's other opinions before you elevate him that much.

Quite.
It's been amusing this week to read such staunch defence of such a very ambiguous human being. Hey ho.

sevenbyseven · 24/02/2023 18:08

"Queen Camilla" is correct. So is referring to her as "The Queen".

You don't have use the word "Consort" all the time, same as we didn't for Prince Philip, or for every Queen Consort throughout history.

And she's quite entitled to state her views about the ridiculous censoring of Roald Dahl too.

Salman Rushdie (who knows a few things about censorship) put it well on Twitter:

"Roald Dahl was no angel but this is absurd censorship."

Maireas · 24/02/2023 18:19

It doesn't matter whether you agree with a person or not. It's a dangerous route to go down with this kind of censorship. I can't stand the views of certain authors and tv pundits, so I just don't read or listen to them.
I know that cancel culture is a whole huge debate.

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 24/02/2023 18:22

I should say I totally deplore rewriting an authors work without their permission .

Serenster · 24/02/2023 18:26

Look up Thomas Bowdler, “The Family Shakespeare” and the verb coined in response to his actions for an idea of how history regards this kind of activity.

Morals, tastes and notions of decency change over time. Unless you want to continually re-write literary works to ensure they always conform to current tastes, there will always be something to object to in them, if you want to seek them out. It’s a ridiculous notion.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 24/02/2023 18:30

She didn't mention Dahl - it was more of a hint than a comment. Nicely done, Camilla 😀

That's reminded me of Eng Lit classes in the 60s, using very old texts of Shakespeare and Chaucer where the dubious bits had been removed and replaced with a row of dots. Our A level teacher told us that the joke was the really filthy bits were so obscure that the censor missed the meaning and left them in.

Wonnle · 24/02/2023 18:33

We haven't got a Queen no more !

To quote The Smiths album "The Queen is Dead"

FixitJesus · 24/02/2023 18:47

I, like many others, will never accept Camilla as The Queen

hahaha

I always loved the story (probably apocryphal, I suppose; the best ones always are) about the substitution of "trumpet" for "strumpet" in "Othello", to give the line: " She played the trumpet in my bed".

Chaucer was censored at my Catholic school too. We studied ‘The Nun’s Priest’s Tale’ and they censored the epilogue in which the host exclaims ‘Bless your balls and breeches!’. Our English teacher smuggled the correct version into the lesson as she considered the censorship ridiculous, which it was.

A level English was a bit of a revelation, as the teachers didn't hold back from explanations. Hamlet's 'country matters' and offering to lie in Ophelia's lap 😮

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/02/2023 18:58

I, like many others, will never accept Camilla as The Queen, nor refer to her as such

And what you will or won't accept or how you will or won't refer to her makes bugger all difference, love. Certainly not to Camilla, who I suspect is more concerned with her coronation rehearsals and getting her crown fitted than the splutterings of some random.

EdithWeston · 24/02/2023 19:01

What I can never work out is why the wish that she were an open arse and he a poperin pear isn't better known. So I assume there are lots of Bowdlerised versions of Romeo and Juliet kicking around

milti · 24/02/2023 19:32

Like the little mermaid, she’s found her voice - it’s worked as well- Dahl’s
books will continue to be printed as drafted - with woke versions available for the snowflakes

Think it was in the Times today that someone pointed out there are probably millions of copies of Dahl books with the unamended phrases in houses all over the country - are they going to demand all those are rounded up and destroyed?

ArcaneWireless · 24/02/2023 19:40

@BigMandsTattooPortfolio

I love your name. That episode breaks me every time. 😁

entirelyesspresso · 24/02/2023 19:57

It's not political, it's common sense and she's right.

OP has derailed their own thread by referring Camilla as the Queen, they are either ignorant or stirring the pot.

1982mommaof4 · 24/02/2023 20:15

The whole thing is absolutely ridiculous

How is referring to the Queen as the Queen being ignorant?

Lesserspottedmama · 24/02/2023 20:17

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 24/02/2023 15:55

  1. Because she can.
  2. Because she's correct.

Exactly

Flossflower · 24/02/2023 17:26

Although I do agree with her, the royal family are not supposed to take sides. She is also not very bright. I understand one of the things that Camilla had in common with Diana was they both only achieved 2 ‘O’ levels at school.

You can be bright without passing exams. Ben g smart comes in many forms.

GlassBunion · 24/02/2023 20:23

It was announced last year that Camilla would be referred to as The Queen and that the word 'consort' would be dropped.
It was in mainstream news. I don't know why people are objecting to it.
