The royal family

Why is the Queen commenting on the Roald Dahl controversy?

I thought the Royal Family were supposed to be uncontroversial and unpolitical, so why is the Queen getting involved in this? It is nothing to do with her, she did not have to say anything?

Or have the rules changed and they are now going to be more controversial and political?

Although I do agree with her, the royal family are not supposed to take sides. She is also not very bright. I understand one of the things that Camilla had in common with Diana was they both only achieved 2 ‘O’ levels at school.

And yet she's Queen and you and I are not.

OutofEverything · 24/02/2023 17:29

I don't care if they are going to start sharing controversial political opinions. As long as that rule applies to them all.

I, like many others, will never accept Camilla as The Queen, nor refer to her as such.

I couldn't give two shits what the Palace wants. The public will decide if they accept her, or not. For most people I know it's a definite not.

Our beloved Queen is dead. Camilla is no replacement.

I'd say you are in cloud cuckoo land.

Most people I know accept her as Queen now and think that Charles should have been allowed to marry her decades ago rather than being forced into the disastrous marriage to Diana.

That may have been due to lack of expectations rather than "brightness". Camilla was expected to marry well and have a nice life in the country, rather than build a career. I expect she was probably enjoying herself rather too much rather than studying when she was 15/16. She is very well read and is passionate about promoting reading.

NoSquirrels · 24/02/2023 17:32

So she didn’t actually mention Ronald Dahl at all, then?

What is controversial?

How DARE anyone change the text of a well-loved and massively popular childrens book?

Did they get the authors permission? Bit difficult as he's been dead for years.

The only controversial thing is that this would be permitted by his publisher or his estate.

NoSquirrels · 24/02/2023 17:33

Aaaargh FFS autocorrect. Roald!!

Ah, but Camilla didn't want to marry Charles then. She was in love with Andrew Parker Bowles.

Wasn't Camilla one of three women he was casually seeing as a batchelor?

Plitvice · 24/02/2023 17:36

Bachelor
--and beyond, obviously!!

LadyWiddiothethird · 24/02/2023 17:36

Camilla will always be the Queen Consort! The Telegraph made a mistake calling her the Queen, later in the article they referred to her as Queen Consort.

Ameadowwalk · 24/02/2023 17:36

Mouthfulofquiz · 24/02/2023 15:51

How is she managing to do that from beyond the grave?

Quite.

It's not wrong. She is both Queen and she is Queen Consort. Using both in the same article is just like using Derry and Londonderry in the same article. Both are correct.

Plitvice · 24/02/2023 17:38

I would LOVE to hear Roald's opinion on it from beyond the grave!

SleepingStandingUp · 24/02/2023 17:39

@OutofEverything "Camilla urged writers “to remain true to your calling, unimpeded by those who may wish to curb the freedom of your expression or your imagination....Let there be no squeaking like mice but only roaring like a pride of lions!”.

.that is not a controversial political opinion.

Speaking out against censoring long-published and circulated literature is neither controversial nor political. I would put it on par with encouraging a healthy lifestyle, valuing mental health, or any other relatively benign campaign they are allowed.

No one censored them. The holders of the copyright chose to issue new versions.

Everyone here is obliging them with free publicity.

It was a commercial decision.

Lol- maybe google some of the man's other opinions before you elevate him that much.

Really the thread should end here. The rest of it is just slosh about whether C. is Q or QC.

^ This!

Her opinion was not political, nor was it especially controversial.

And you do know that she never mentioned Dahl at all?

GoodChat · 24/02/2023 17:47

They're doing really well on the uncontroversial front aren't they?

Maireas · 24/02/2023 17:48

Ameadowwalk · 24/02/2023 17:36

Quite.

Because she is alive and well.

She is Queen Consort as opposed to Queen Regnant.
However, it is correct to refer to her as The Queen. Because she is.

Hmm. Wonder if this was a defence of her friend, Jeremy Clarkson?

caringcarer · 24/02/2023 17:55

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 24/02/2023 15:55

  1. Because she can.
  2. Because she's correct.

Absolutely this. Camilla has long had a keen interest in literature belonging to book clubs and advocating libraries and reading, for children. Reading is not political. To sensor and changing books is.

Perhaps you should write to the charity (the one in her name) and tell them you think they made a mistake too. I'm sure no fucks will be given.
