The royal family

Why is the Queen commenting on the Roald Dahl controversy?

I thought the Royal Family were supposed to be uncontroversial and unpolitical, so why is the Queen getting involved in this? It is nothing to do with her, she did not have to say anything?

Or have the rules changed and they are now going to be more controversial and political?

News alert! Camilla is The Queen. And her reading club is called The Queen's Reading Room.

Yes, but it's marking its second anniversary, so it must have got its for some other reason than the rank of its patron (or did it change name last September?)

It's fine to call the Queen. That's what she was called at the Privy Council Proclamation, and that's the epitome of formal and correct

garlicandsapphires · 24/02/2023 15:53

Queen Consort you mean.
Just as Philip was not the King.

No, OP means the Queen. Just as the wives of George VI, George V and Edward VII were called the Queen whilst their respective husbands were on the throne.

  1. Because she can.
  2. Because she's correct.

Really the thread should end here. The rest of it is just slosh about whether C. is Q or QC.

StaunchMomma · 24/02/2023 16:27

I, like many others, will never accept Camilla as The Queen, nor refer to her as such.

I couldn't give two shits what the Palace wants. The public will decide if they accept her, or not. For most people I know it's a definite not.

Our beloved Queen is dead. Camilla is no replacement.

Pretty much everyone I know accepts her as & calls her Queen. I think in general people do now.

ArcaneWireless · 24/02/2023 16:33

Likewise Kinneddar.

The ones left holding on to the two shits they don’t want to give will be as full of it as ever.

Ponderingwindow · 24/02/2023 16:39

Speaking out against censoring long-published and circulated literature is neither controversial nor political. I would put it on par with encouraging a healthy lifestyle, valuing mental health, or any other relatively benign campaign they are allowed.

Well, no.
Charles is the replacement. That's how it works.

I don't know anyone who gives a flying fig. I suspect the Queen also doesn't care that you don't think she's the Queen, even though she is.

No, she isn't a replacement for the Queen. That would be King Charles. Just as Queen Elizabeth was the replacement for King George VI.

DorritLittle · 24/02/2023 16:47

I have never read a thread with so many mentions of The Queen. The word is starting to look strange.

Not sure how she is being political.

weatherthestorms · 24/02/2023 16:48

My first reaction was, Is she back from the dead????

SleepingStandingUp · 24/02/2023 16:55

In her speech to mark the second anniversary of her literary initiative Reading Room at Clarence House, Camilla urged writers “to remain true to your calling, unimpeded by those who may wish to curb the freedom of your expression or your imagination”.
In what was interpreted as her disapproval of the changes made to the text of Dahl’s classic books. to make his stories more palatable and less challenging to modern readers, the Queen Consort said: “Let there be no squeaking like mice but only roaring like a pride of lions!”

so your thread is "Why did Camilla make a perfectly reasonable point in an entirely appropriate context"?

Erm, cos she can? It isn't political.

Justforlaffs · 24/02/2023 16:57

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/02/2023 15:59

Nothing political about sticking up for free speech and criticising this utter buffoonery.

Yep. She’s massively gone up in my estimation actually - quite brave of her to stick her neck out.

3peassuit · 24/02/2023 17:01

Good on her, whatever she calls herself.

ShippingNews · 24/02/2023 17:06

garlicandsapphires · 24/02/2023 15:53

Just as Philip was not the King.

Not at all. Prince Phillip wasn't king because a king outranks a queen. Like Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, wasn't king.

A woman married to a king is a queen , not a queen consort. Like Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Like Queen Alexandria.

The term "consort" was only used for the transitional period after Queen Elizabeth died. It was never going to be used permanently.

EL8888 · 24/02/2023 17:08

I love a good seance about Roald Dahl!

No. Camilla is the Queen.
Has been since the moment her husband became king.

Maireas · 24/02/2023 17:12

The Queen's Reading Room is an excellent charity.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 24/02/2023 17:23

I don’t see why she can’t express an opinion and in any case, I agree with her.

weatherthestorms · 24/02/2023 16:48

Me too. I don’t consider Camilla the Queen

Flossflower · 24/02/2023 17:26

Although I do agree with her, the royal family are not supposed to take sides. She is also not very bright. I understand one of the things that Camilla had in common with Diana was they both only achieved 2 ‘O’ levels at school.

Plitvice · 24/02/2023 17:28

I don't like her but I know for a fact that she is well read and has strong opinions on literature. She wouldn't just say it for effect.
