Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

Charles was Wales before the births of his children so they were always Wales. I was just wondering if William's children will now change the surname they're known by in school, which would be rather confusing for them!

The birth certificates wouldn't contain any surname I'd have thought

There are pix of the birth certificates online, and they do not use a surname. It's Prince/ss XYZ of Cambridge.

I expect they will change to Wales - bet they have staff to order new name tapes and sew them in to three complete sets of school uniform (just days after they'd have finished with the first time round!!)

If they wanted to use a surname, they would probably be Mountbatten-Windsor, like the King's other DGC - it's a variant of the Windsor family name for use by descendants of QEII and Prince Phillip (descendants of others in that royal house are simply Windsor)

No idea why Lady Louise seems to be Windsor rather than Mountbatten-Windsor

I was really teary watching it. His emotion was palpable. I think he will be a good king.

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/09/2022 18:44

William and Harry both used Wales as a surname when they were in the forces. George, Charlotte, and Louis are now Prince(ss) Firstname of Wales so I imagine they will switch to that at some point. They are young; they will adjust.

Whenever they talked about his jobs - helicopter pilot, air force or whatever he did.

Yes William and Harry were both Wales at Eton and when in the military

I wouldn't be surprised if the children continue to use Cambridge in personal settings like school. I think William continued to use William Wales professionally after he became Duke of Cambridge.

Let's face it, the Queen was always going to be a hard act to follow. I'm sure when she came to the throne at such a young age, there were rumblings about whether she had enough experience etc. but she just got on with it and grew into the role, as will he.

It can't have been easy waiting in the wings for so long, and I think Charles will surprise people and do a good job. He has been waiting for a long time to make certain changes, and I think they will be for the better (sliming down i.e. getting rid of Andy).

ZandathePanda · 09/09/2022 18:47

I had a little tear as well. Surprised myself.

lovely speech. V moving. Today it has been 1 year and 5 months since Prince Philip passed away.

I hope they are together again. She must have been devastated when she lost him and although a year and a bit without him must have been tough, I’m glad she didn’t have to spend any longer without him as much as we will all miss her. It’s like a blessing in disguise almost.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 09/09/2022 18:48

A very moving and deeply heartfelt speech.
It had me choked up too.

Puppypads · 09/09/2022 18:48

Oh lord that speech finished me. I've become increasingly fond of Charles and camilla over the years but that was a wonderful, heartfelt, humble and human speech.
God Save the King.
I'm not even British

That was a lovely speech.

And as an aside, he has the most beautiful speaking voice. I could listen to him all day

Yes! He should do the CBeebies bedtime story. Also a Winnie the Pooh audiobook.

Why encourage it.

I didn’t realise I was ??? I was simply preempting the predicate comments .

Pawpatrolwereonaroll · 09/09/2022 18:50

I thought the heir to the throne was automatically prince of Wales. If William hadn’t become POW would there just not have been one?

Mae wastad rhywun i ddweud rhywbeth negyddol.

Bydd Willam a Catherine yn gwneud llysgenhadon gwych i Gymru.

Indeed! I wish them well and I believe they feel a real connection to Wales and I believe they will do well for Wales. Given a chance.

CPL593H · 09/09/2022 18:52

It is a good address. I thought earlier today that what could be considered weakness (showing emotions, Prince Charles sorry King Charles should never play poker) could actually be a great strength. The Queen did it her way, it suited her personality and it worked but there is no law saying that he can't show more vulnerability and also be successful.

I hope the short meeting with the crowds today gave him a boost at a very difficult time.

takemetomars · 09/09/2022 18:52

Fuck me. Made me bawl. Bringing up memories of my dad

That's right. It's in the gift of the Sovereign.

JacquelineCarlyle · 09/09/2022 18:53

That was a great speech - I'm surprised at how well he did. Loved that William is now Prince of Wales & that he shared his love for Harry & Meghan. The last line was especially poignant.

speakout · 09/09/2022 18:53

Does anyone have a link to his speech?

I can't find it.

mum11970 · 09/09/2022 18:53

What do you mean by good decision? The title only goes to the male heir to the throne. It will go to Prince George next. It cannot be given to anyone else.

adriftabroad · 09/09/2022 18:54

What a fabulous speech. I also felt teary.

I feel really optomistic that he will be a great King.

Hopefully no more "Kate Middleton" in the tabloids now, it used to really irritate me. Princess of Wales to you now!

Anonymouseposter · 09/09/2022 18:54

It was a beautiful speech and I do think Charles will be an excellent King.
In Wales there will be split opinion about William and Catherine being Prince and Princess of Wales, some people will object on principle.
There was a lot of unrest in North Wales before Charles' investiture.

Lovely piping - amazing how a single piper can fill that immense space.

Excellent speech. Glad William and Catherine are now Prince and Princess of Wales. Their children will surely be know as Wales now instead of Cambridge. Hoping Prince Edward made Duke of Edinburgh and Sophie Duchess.
