Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

Who William & Kate?

CormoranStrike · 09/09/2022 18:32

That was an impressive speech, very fitting for his new stealth’s, yet personal and loving

In Scotland, Charles was previously known as the Duke of Rothesay. William and Kate were previously the Earl and Countess of Strathearn. I am assuming that William and Kate will now become the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, in addition to being the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Yes, he mentioned that they are also now Rothesay in Scotland

AnneShirleysNewDress · 09/09/2022 18:32

A wonderful speech and he did well to keep it together.

BreadInCaptivity · 09/09/2022 18:33

Great speech - struck just the right tone imho.

Pleased to hear W&C will be P&P of Wales.

I also thought his reference to H&M in expressing his love for them was good.

I was surprisingly emotional watching it.

catinboots123 · 09/09/2022 18:33

Well I just watched on catch up. I'm thinking i can get on board with King Charles. I never thought I'd be a Chaz stan. Beautiful speech.

He's come along way from wanting to be a tampon.

Vapeyvapevape · 09/09/2022 18:35

A really genuine and heartfelt speech, he appeared very humble imo.

Charles was Wales before the births of his children so they were always Wales. I was just wondering if William's children will now change the surname they're known by in school, which would be rather confusing for them!

The birth certificates wouldn't contain any surname I'd have thought

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/09/2022 18:35

Nanny Borello will have to re sew all the name labels in their school uniforms to Wales now.

Quite nice for William that he returns (with his dc) to that surname.

Im sure Ive seen Williams and it says William Wales, or perhaps thats the marriage cert

MarshaMelrose · 09/09/2022 18:35

Just watched. Crying so much. I think he'll be a great king. He's very in touch with what people think.

So is George now Earl of Strathearn?

"Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest" is an echo of the Catholic burial mass, referenced by Horatio in Hamlet

More recently, it's also Song for Athene by John Taverner which was the recessional at the funeral of Diana Princess of Wales

I'm sure it's part of a hymn as well - I can sing the middle bit but can't remember the title!

Plus there was an echo of it in Doctor Who when the Ood came to sing the 10th doctor to his regeneration

And it was memorably said to Queenie in Blackadder, who was charmed by it the first time she heard it but rapidly tired of similar sentiments.

Clawdy · 09/09/2022 18:37

I didn't expect to hear such a heartfelt and moving speech from Charles, and loved him talking about Harry and Meghan. A very good start to his reign.

Correct, they don't.

I think technically Catherine is still Catherine Middleton but obviously would never be referred to with that surname and would likely be Mrs Cambride at school (once they get the initial formalities over with). The kids are young enough to get used to a change to Wales. At least they won't need to change it again until they marry and get issued with a Dukedom.

bellac11 · 09/09/2022 18:39

The birth certificate is online, and no it hasnt got a surname. I must have imagined it. I thought I'd seen himm referred to as William Wales somewhere.

No. They are issued rather than inherited so likely he will get an Earldom or Dukedom when he becomes an adult or marries.

Nidan2Sandan · 09/09/2022 18:40

He did a great speech. I always felt he was a bit stilted when he spoke publically but this time it just felt relaxed, warm and humble.

I have great hope for his reign, his speech had me choked up.

Whenever they talked about his jobs - helicopter pilot, air force or whatever he did.

I also cried ffs 🙄 Sensible move to declare the Wales' straight away. I think it would have been nice if he had done the same for Ed & Soph (Edinburgh) but I'm guessing that'll come soon enough. I'm glad he gave H&M a mention.

Me too re. Sophie and Edward, but I'm thinking that he is probably following protocol as the existing Duchess of Edinburgh only died yesterday?

Pleased about William and Kate.

And that he showed his love for Harry and Meghan.

Really tearful times though!

TrashyPanda · 09/09/2022 18:41

Such a moving speech.

his love and devotion shone out.

rocketfromthecrypt · 09/09/2022 18:42

It was a lovely speech. Just formal enough, but so poignant and with a dignified level of touching emotion. I love that he acknowledged how his life will change and made it very clear that camilla will be by his side. Strong but soft.

FuzzySock · 09/09/2022 18:42

A lovely address. I was in tears, and loved the Shakespeare quote “flights of angels sing thee to thy rest” ❤️(Hamlet)

PicturesOfDogs · 09/09/2022 18:42

That was a lovely speech.

And as an aside, he has the most beautiful speaking voice. I could listen to him all day
