Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

Charles got the tone of his speech absolutely spot on. He was emotional but clearly laying out his path as King.

Imagine a whole life training for a job and then finally getting it in your 70s when your peers are slowing down and enjoying retirement.

I'm also glad that William and Catherine have had almost 5 years of quiet family life before being thrown into the deep end. A huge change for the entire family.

What do you mean by good decision? The title only goes to the male heir to the throne. It will go to Prince George next. It cannot be given to anyone else.

It doesn't have to be given. It merges with the Crown when the current holder ascends. It stays with the monarch until they pass it on. They can choose when to do so. Typically it would be to the heir apparent.

I thought he did a really good job, came across as very congruent

I think I will like our new King more than I anticipated I would.

Yes! He should do the CBeebies bedtime story. Also a Winnie the Pooh audiobook.

He read his own book “The Old Man of Lochnagar” on Jackanory in the 80s. Not sure if there’s any video footage of it about.

DreadingWinter · 09/09/2022 18:57

He was excellent. I've met him informally and chatted to him about our DC. It comes across how much he loves his. He's going to modernise the monarchy and be a great King.

toomuchlaundry · 09/09/2022 18:58

@PolkaDotMankini he did do Jackanory, read a book he had written

SoupDragon · 09/09/2022 18:58

what a lovely speech.

i could not imagine having to do that 24 hours after my mother's death.

loved the line from Hamlet - one of my favourite quotes.

Unforgettablefire · 09/09/2022 18:59

I've warmed to him, I always thought he was standoffish but seeing him so humble and speaking from the heart like that it's made me warm to him.
I think he'll do ok.

Limer · 09/09/2022 18:59

Brilliant speech.

Delighted at the immediate appointment of the new Prince & Princess of Wales.

lazarusb · 09/09/2022 18:59

Great speech but I don't know how he got through it. My dad died a few months ago and I spent the day after crying down the phone to insurance and pension companies etc.

I'm glad that he showed emotion and love. Must be hard to become King at the age of 73.

MarshaMelrose · 09/09/2022 19:00

You could see the cuts in the speech where they'd edited. I wonder if he choked up in parts and he had to redo it.

Mumsnut · 09/09/2022 19:01

i don’t know though

She’d sooner be sung to her rest by flights of corgis , I reckon. Led by Susan

onlylarkin · 09/09/2022 19:01

@lazarusb I agree. My father died last spring and I was not near as composed.

ShaunaTheSheep · 09/09/2022 19:01

Catherine is a fitting choice to be the next Princess of Wales after Diana, I think.

I thought it was live? Was it recorded?

ChrisPriss · 09/09/2022 19:05

God save the King

asblindasabat · 09/09/2022 19:06

what happens to Diana’s title? (I know she’s not alive) but she has always been known as Diana, Princess of Wales. Does she lose that now since Kate has got it?

PAFMO · 09/09/2022 19:06

It was very well done.
DD said to me earlier, imagine you can't even sit at home and properly cry for your mum because you've got to get out there and take on the job.
I think him and Camilla are going to be great.

MarshaMelrose · 09/09/2022 19:06

I didn't watch it live. I watched in on the PBS YouTube channel. And you could see little jumps like it had been edited. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Heaven wouldn't be heaven unless you get all the dogs there

No, it isn't removed posthumously.

toomuchlaundry · 09/09/2022 19:07

Having to get used to hearing God Save the King

honeylulu · 09/09/2022 19:07

I thought he pitched it perfectly. Full of warmth and love but not mawkish. I agree lovely soothing voice. Loved the references to the commonwealth, his charities and that he did not try and avoid mentioning Camilla - declared her his darling as well as consort. And ending with Shakespeare and a gentle smile.

Tierne · 09/09/2022 19:08

Was it me or did he look like he was about to cry in the last second? That was a beautiful speech. I love how he addressed his mama directly. I cried

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/09/2022 19:08

A beautiful, heartfelt, loving and humble speech.

It moved me greatly.
