Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

It was a lovely speech.

onlylarkin · 09/09/2022 18:24

That was much faster than I suspected.

It was a lovely address to a mourning world.

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 09/09/2022 18:24

Yes, he did really well

I sobbed at the my dearest mama being with Papa, that set me right off. I thought it was brilliant, and couldn't stop thinking how hard this must all be for him, if I lost my mum I would want to be hiding away with family, but onwards he must go

I dont know how people dont cry, how do people stop themselves crying, ive never been able to

Agree this is a good decision - will there have to be an investiture for W. now?

I was under the mistaken belief that he couldn't just announce it like that and there would have to be an investiture for Wiiliam.

But I've just googled, and I was wrong. Even though Charles and Edward VII had an investiture, they don't have to do it.

All they need to so is just announce William is Prince Of Wales and that's it.
It'll be interesting if they still do an investiture as well

Ilikewinter · 09/09/2022 18:25

I agree with the perfect speech.
I missed the first bit, saw from where he was talking about his charities....will he hand those over to another member of the royal family now?

SpinCityBlues · 09/09/2022 18:25

I'm just old enough to vaguely remember Charles's own investiture in 1969.

In the ceremony at Caernarfon Castle the Queen gave Charles the symbols that marked him as Prince of Wales; the sword, coronet, ring, rod and mantle. In addition to the 4000 guests present in the castle, 19 million saw it at home and another 500 million watched around the world. [BBC archive]

A lovely speech. The inherited titles thing is interesting. Will George, Charlotte and Louis now be known as surname Cornwall? Apparently in school they were surnamed Cambridge.

Wales, surely?
That was the surname used by William and Harry at school and the army.

smilesy · 09/09/2022 18:27

I thought the speech was a really lovely balance of the personal and involving the Nation. It had me all choked up because I think he managed to convey his loss whilst at the same time maintaining his dignity. I loved the way he referred to his family and acknowledged how their lives would change too. Good decision to make William PoW

GlacindaTheTroll · 09/09/2022 18:27

"Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest" is an echo of the Catholic burial mass, referenced by Horatio in Hamlet

More recently, it's also Song for Athene by John Taverner which was the recessional at the funeral of Diana Princess of Wales

I'm sure it's part of a hymn as well - I can sing the middle bit but can't remember the title!

Plus there was an echo of it in Doctor Who when the Ood came to sing the 10th doctor to his regeneration

I think they may be known by Wales as that is the senior title. Someone more knowledgeable will come along.

diddl · 09/09/2022 18:27

I also thought it was a good speech.

Straight in there with Camilla being his Queen Consort!

Although I'm sure that that was never in doubt.

I was reading earlier that not only did Charles wait ages to be confirmed as PoW, but then waited another 8 years or so to be invested.

InternetRandom · 09/09/2022 18:27

Makes total sense to declare William and Kate Prince and Princess of Wales straight away. There will be his coronation. Another investiture is too much and would have invited negative comment. They can just get on with it!

I do hope he'll formally declare Edward Duke of Edinburgh soon as it seems that was the wish of the Queen and Philip. But I suppose that detracts from direct succession and the Queen if done today. Ah well.

toomuchlaundry · 09/09/2022 18:27

@bellac11 I have been a right mess in the last 2 days, there is no way I could stop myself from crying. Just have to see someone else crying and it sets me off!

Depends whats on their birth certs surely. I thought William was Wales, which Ive never understood as I dont get why he isnt Windsor

But if the children are Wales they would stay that way surely

justasking111 · 09/09/2022 18:30

William and Katherine lived in Wales quite near us. He worked on the rescue helicopters, saving lives. They were both well liked, an unassuming couple who were afforded privacy by the locals. So I'm glad they are to be the prince and princess of Wales. It seems fitting

CaptainBarbosa · 09/09/2022 18:30

I broke when he said "may angels carry you away" that was me done...😭😭

I'm so happy to have William and Catherine as our Prince and Princess of Wales.

And full credit to Charles for saying Tywysog Cymru. Not the easiest of words Tywysog or Tywysoges.

KassandraOfSparta · 09/09/2022 18:30

bellac11 · 09/09/2022 18:15

Me too, it was the end that got me, and the fact that he had mentioned Harry and Meghan

So William and Kate are Prince and Princess of Wales, then Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, but I got confused about what he meant by 'my scottish titles'

In Scotland, Charles was previously known as the Duke of Rothesay. William and Kate were previously the Earl and Countess of Strathearn. I am assuming that William and Kate will now become the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, in addition to being the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Prince of Wales is created by decree of the monarch, so yes it's done. He has to issue Letters Patent to confirm it, but that may already be done, or will be happening imminently (does it have to wait until after the Accession Council?)

An investiture will follow at some point.

The Queen created Charles as Prince of Wales in 1958, but the investiture was not until 1969
