Lenny however needs a rest before he starts searching.

However I think marking the cats as 'reserved' this early in the process is unusual.

It seems unusual to me too. There’s a big gap between expressing interest in a cat & actually adopting it.

There were a couple of adopters early on who were very interested in Kitty. One couldn’t get permission from her landlord (this was a while ago) & one ended up moving abroad for her job, but they were both quite clear that they wanted to reserve her. It just wasn’t happening unless they signed the forms & paid.

YelramBob · 14/01/2026 17:32

Congratulations on your son @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats My landlady's son is a music student in Germany, maybe they know each other? 😅

Totally agree about living with only cats post-divorce - I recommend in-house fighting, petty squabbles and dramas at feeding time when the wrong food is served. And jealousy when another male enters the house. Oh wait, too many parallels there 🤣

jellywithstrawberries · 14/01/2026 19:00

@Breadcat24 without sounding like a creepy lurker which i am😂 after my precious girl passed, i applied to Mayhew (not ure if you're london based) and their process is select one to adopt, have an initial call, matched for adoption, then meet and reserve , video of flat amd final approval to take home. mine took from 22nd to 2nd jan because of christmas, and the gorgeous kitty i have beside isnt the one i originally applied for. but as empress said they match you and also keep you on the 'books' for 6 months so first go. best of luck to you, i have a whirling storm cloud after my gorgeous dainty old lady, but i wouldn't change it for the world xx

jellywithstrawberries · 14/01/2026 19:02

to add , storm cloud wasnt who i originally applied for, but is perfect 🙁😻

Do not understand how the adoption process works!
So far I have applied for

  • A cat from the RSPCA- no acknowlegment of application but the next dat the cat was labelled as reserved on their website
  • A cat from Bluecross- acknowlegment of application saying I would hear in 10 days, but again the next day the cat was labelled as reserved on their website
  • A cat from a small animal shelter- they acknowledge and asked for picture of house and garden
Does that mean 1 cat, 2 cats, 3 cats or no cats?

How frustrating, there's often comments on the Litter Tray about how hard it can be to actually adopt a cat, and here you are with proof- maddening!😡
Got everything crossed that very soon the perfect puss will be on your lap, adorably asleep, when you really need a wee!
Edited as typed 'maddening' twice, but maybe I should have left it!

When I've got mine, & Annie hers from the same place, you call and speak to the fabulous Ruth about what you're looking for. She arranges a time for you to go & visit, & she shows you to the cats she thinks are best suited - in 3 visits between us we've never been introduced to fewer than about a dozen cats!

You can reserve the cat(s) you fall for then and there, but you'll have met them all and spent at least 20-30 minutes with the cat(s) you like then a long discussion with Ruth. The cats go for a final vet check, any due jabs, worming/deflea-ing and claw clipping before you can take them home a week or so later.

oh god there was a gorgeous boy Milo! who i didnt take, i asked for updates and apparently they have found him the perfect home x i hate options! cats arent options

Allergictoironing · 14/01/2026 19:30

It was as much the cats interviewing us as us interviewing the cats. Annie went with a gorgeous pair in mind in particular, the cats took one look and said "NO" to her & nephew no.4 with accompanying hisses & growls. When I first went there, Girlcat claimed me with a soft paw resting on my hand despite them being the shyest cats in the place & me having been 3/4 of the way towards getting 2 completely different cats.

Frederick would like everyone to know that Lithuanian mice are the best mice, especially when given an extra spray of the 'nip.

Stripey (who I always suspected of being an evil genius behind her shy demeanour) has learned how to open tubs. Last night I gave the cats a couple of treats that come in a tube with a plastic sealable cap. This morning the tube was lying open with the cap on the top of the cat scratcher.

I'm accusing her because Snowcat is much less naughty, wasn't that into those particular treats, and also when DH asked her she definitely shook her head.

She has also learned how to open the big wooden cupboard in our living room and we discovered that she has spent the last few days hiding behind the bags of knitting yarn I store in it. Fortunately she doesn't seem interested in pulling out the yarn and playing with it, just sitting on the bags.

It’s always the quiet ones….

@jellywithstrawberries Stormy is gorgeous!
Black cats are wonderful. I have a black cat who is getting on in years now but he is my heart and soul. He is currently giving me evils because why am I doing nothing about the weather. The look of betrayal is something to behold.

Eko on the other hand who is a stripey boy goes out in the rain like it was a sunny day. But he does like to come in, be nicely dried and then off out he goes again.

Gizmo this morning, trying to look innocent.
He'd just knocked over a bowl of sweets and was batting them round the carpet.

He's really not very good at looking innocent 🤣.

There was a cranefly on the wall last night. Kitty stared up at it, patted vaguely in its direction & went to look out of the window. I think chasing sweets would be definitely more her level.

That's because he's generally guilty of something.
🤣

He woke me up at 9am this morning, chirruping in my ear, because he considered that it was time for his breakfast.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 17/01/2026 21:36

Well now, I went to a village shindig last night with my friend's husband (she died in July) and I hope nobody got the wrong impression.

I bet they did, though. This is the very friendly man who kindly takes Linney and me up to the vet's each month.

I like him but do not fancy him. And as Allergic said, who needs all that hassle when you've got a vibrator?

9am? Toad starts whinging at 7!

This morning at some ridiculous time, I was woken up by Frank shoving his face right next to mine until I lifted the duvet for him to come for a snuggle. These cats have no respect for my beauty sleep!

Pixiedust1234 · 18/01/2026 00:11

Perhaps I'd better not mention that I woke up at 10am a couple of times last week. The Stray was curled up on the bed, quite relaxed about not being fed. I have checked by eyebrows, fingers and toes.

EmpressaurusKitty · 18/01/2026 06:10

9? 7?

I get up at 5am 4 mornings a week, Wed & Fri to go to the gym before WFH, Tue & Thur because they’re my in-office days & I like to do 8-4 to avoid rush hour traffic on the way home.

Since Kitty can tell the time but not read calendars, even when she’s on the front of them, she thinks 5 is getting up time every day. Although that does sometimes mean I get her breakfast & go back to sleep.
