I’m so sad and worried
One of my three beautiful cats has overnight lost the use of her back legs and is dragging them
We are seeing the vet this afternoon
She is almost thirteen
Three months ago her right hind leg was stiff and she was a bit wobbly on it. Bloods were run and didn’t reveal and raised markers she was predicted pain relief and within days was back to her normal self.
The last few days she has been a bit stiff again but was still getting up into the cat tree, using her litter tray and eating and walking fine
Yesterday she just went downhill late at night.

My heart is in my mouth and I’m so sad. She is eating today but I’ve had to help her back into her favourite hiding hole . She’s had water and used the litter tray. She’s let me brush her and cuddle her.
When I call her she responded and is purring occasionally plus her eyes are bright. I’m hoping against hope aren’t I?

I’m terrified this is a saddle thrombus / thrombosis

I’m so worried she will need to be PTS today when I take her.

Does anyone have any happy outcomes for this sort of thing. I’ve had her and her sister since they were 12 weeks old they have been my family before I had one of my own 😢

Oh what a worry, no experience I’m sorry. I hope everything will be okay Flowers

ZooKeeper19 · 06/05/2020 11:44

So sorry to hear :(

I heard of kittens having no use and getting better. It may be infection (that may be treatable) or for older cats kidney issues can cause this (again testing will reveal).

Really hope your kitty recovers. 13 is great age but hopefully she has some more years in her to run.

stophuggingme · 06/05/2020 14:57

Thanks for your kind comments and thoughts it’s appreciated

I’m just sat at the vets now waiting
She scratched and kissed when I retired to put her in the carrier she was very wriggly and resistant I hope that’s a good sign but I think I’m hoping against hope

So sorry OP. Our precious cat is currently at the cat hospital having an ultrasound after suddenly collapsing late last night with apparent heart failure.

Here's hoping there is good news for both of us.

Want2beme · 06/05/2020 15:35

I hope she's okSmile

stophuggingme · 06/05/2020 16:27

Well she is home and on strong painklllers
She managed to escape from the cat carrier by clambering out over the side and then skittered in three legs to her otter tray
She’s currently in the dog’s bed drinking water From a little bowl and eating m and a shredded chicken

The vets have given us 48 hours at home to see if there is a marked improvement Asher pulse and HR and other markers were normal. They suspected a fall or some sort of trauma to her spine so if there was no improvement they were pushing for me to consider PTS On the weekend
I am just praying that it isn’t irreversible trauma or damage and it is something that can be treated 🤞🏻She is a beloved part of our family

@Wolfff I am sending good vibes for your lovely cat too I really hope your fur baby pulls through too Flowers

Glad she's home! Fingers crossed she improves over the weekend.

We are still waiting to hear. She has been on oxygen and drugs since last night but had improved a bit when they called us this morning though her lungs were still congested. Waiting and waiting for the results of the heart ultrasound....

Unravellingslowly · 06/05/2020 17:37

Stophuggingme fingers crossed she improves and she will be okay.

Wolfff I hope you hear soon & it’s good new.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2020 18:01

Keeping all paws crossed.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2020 19:51

@Wolff. My cat did really well in medication for heart disease. You'd have never known she was so unwell. It was her kidneys that packed up in the end. Not her heart. If you are in the East Midlands there is a fantastic cardiologist in Derby. I hope you have good insurance, heart disease is very expensive!

Wolfff · 06/05/2020 21:09

@toddlerteaplease

Thanks. We finally got a call and they said her lungs are still congested and she is still on oxygen but apart from heart enlargement they couldn't see a heart defect as such in the scan. They were doing X-rays and bloods. They DK what is wrong.

We are in London. She's at vet chain's hospital. We have insurance but a 20% excess due to her age (10). Already over £3000 accrued fees I think. So over £600 already!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2020 21:20

Is she a posh cat? It can be hereditary. My cats sister has 6 monthly check ups.

Wolfff · 06/05/2020 21:34

No she was a rescue. We got her age about 2. She's a pretty little black cat but a common mog as far as we know.

stophuggingme · 06/05/2020 22:22

@Wolfff sorry you don’t feel like any answers are forthcoming
It’s very hard isn’t it
Little Dolly has now been medicated until 3am by yours truly and I’ve put her in the playroom with a nice bed, food water and a litter tray. I need to keep her separate from the other girls so I know if she’s managing to get to the litter tray and if she’s actually using it
She’s looking balefully at me through the glass. She’s not as bright tonight but I am hoping that the nighttime being a crappy time if you’re off colour is the same for cats as it is us humans
Her sister is pacing the kitchen and dining room now looking for. She went and curled up to her earlier this evening. I felt so sad for them both.
Will try and keep positive but not feeling so right now

Let’s hope that tomorrow brings better news for you and I both @Wolfff

Hoping for a used litter tray in the morning. Though I suspect you'll be up several times overnight to check on her.

penguingorl · 06/05/2020 22:50

Aww, everything crossed for you OP. It's so sad seeing them ill and their siblings confused. We just found out our 3 year old is in stage 3 kidney failure and on top of being heartbroken about him I'm so worried about his brother as they're joined at the hip 95% of the time.

stophuggingme · 06/05/2020 23:03

Thanks @Toddlerteaplease
She’s already used her litter tray
Have set my alarm for 3am for the next round of meds

@penguingorl gosh that’s dreadfully young and so very sad. I’m sorry.
Sending 💐

penguingorl · 07/05/2020 01:06

Thanks so much @stophuggingme Sending Flowers along with positive thoughts for the 3am check and onwards. Having to see our babies go through any kind of pain is just horrific.

stophuggingme · 07/05/2020 04:26

She’s done two poos and a wee
Fought the medicine I got there in the end

I put her in her bed twice she climbed out of the basket and went back into the litter tray. Perhaps the hood makes her feel secure they room is different and big compared to her little nook and cat donut
Hope today brings more resistance and determination 🤞🏻 she is stubborn as a mule so that’s a good sign ....... right? Confused

Thepigeonsarecoming · 07/05/2020 04:32

Fingers crossed for you OP losing a pet is always heartbreaking, you are trying everything you can though. You are an amazing cat mum

stophuggingme · 07/05/2020 04:44

@Thepigeonsarecoming

Thank You so much for that

I will do the best I can for her, even if that turns out to be the saddest goodbye. I looked at her just now before I came back to bed and I think she did look at me as if to say “ I know how much you love me “
Need some sleep but don’t feel like I want to leave her. I need to try though

OP posts:
Thepigeonsarecoming · 07/05/2020 04:47

Whatever happens, she’ll know you loved her x

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2020 06:21

Stubbornness and resistance are a really good sign. If she was quiet it would be more concerning.

stophuggingme · 07/05/2020 23:48

@Wolfff how is your cat doing today?

Dolly has been a minx today. She managed to squirm into the gap between the washer and cupboards in my utility
Came back out ate a can of tuna and prawn and some water then tried to get in the sofa and risked
She’s wobbly but definitely brighter

OP posts:
Wolfff · 09/05/2020 16:57

@stophuggingme

Hope her recovery is continuing!

Mixed few days for us. Discharged from hospital with congestive heart disease (though they can't see it on the scan) and a poor life expectancy. Refused to eat since discharge and has drunk virtually nothing either. Vet told us over the phone to leave her alone to get over the shock of being for 24 hours or so.

DD1 who is a vetmed student spoke to them on the phone and has just gone to get a variety of meds to try a few things at home. It would freak the cat out to go back. Hope something works.
