Which dogs are the smelly ones?

Having read a recent thread about how to keep upolstery clean when you have dogs, I want to ask what dog you would choose as the least smelly.

Are shiny coats smelly? Or particular breeds? Are there some that just don't smell?

IME labs smell a lot. Whippets don’t smell at all.

BeQuirkyMintScroller · 29/12/2025 08:17

I understand it as the coats with oil in them have more of a scent. Labs being the main culprits!

I have a poodle and she doesnt shed or smell. She needs thrice weekly brushing though.

Hounds

Ylvamoon · 29/12/2025 08:18

Chinese Crested Dogs don't smell doggy at all due to luck of hair and skin care products.

My cookerpoo doesn't smell either- very short Poodle coat.

We had a Whippet with the smelliest feet imaginable!

I had a border terrier that absolutely stank. Lovely little dog but an absolute stinker.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 29/12/2025 08:20

Bedlingtons are ok, and my JRT/Frenchie cross was too.

My two dogs have been allowed everywhere in the house as they simply weren’t dirty, bar muddy feet immediately after a wet walk.

Washing and brushing helps.

Spaniels stink

onetimeonlyipromise · 29/12/2025 08:26

I have a greyhound and he seems pretty smell-free. Apart from when he farts -
they can be so bad that even HE leaves the room.

Simonjt · 29/12/2025 08:27

I think its breeds with an oiler coat, although bullbreeds are an exception, they aren’t overly oily like a labrador, but are very smelly as are golden retrievers.

Next door have a poodle, there isn’t the slightest whiff of dog in their home. We have a Shiba Inu, they also don’t have a doggy smell either, if he has a bath you get the very slighest smell when he’s wet, but only if you give him a good sniff. From the amount of shedding you’d think we has 36 dogs in the house.

curious79 · 29/12/2025 08:31

My friend has a miniature dachshund and it has stinky breath - which you notice when it’s in your lap - and our sofa stank where it had been curled up

my aunt and uncle keep their dog impeccably - think lots of grooming and bathing fur a terrier type thing- yet their car stinks to high heaven of dog

personally I’m yet to experience a dog that doesn’t stink a bit

Spaniels stink

Mine really smells especially if he is stressed.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/12/2025 08:36

I have podencos (a sight hound breed). They have short coats and don’t smell much (apart from the farting..)

Blueuggboots · 29/12/2025 08:37

Hounds smell. We had a beagle. She was smelly.

birchtree23 · 29/12/2025 08:38

I have a vizsla as don’t get messy and I’ve washed her about 4 times this year 😂

Dearg · 29/12/2025 08:39

Dogs with longer coats smell, as do those with longer ears. (E.g. spaniels.)

All dogs, including labs, retrievers and spaniels, will smell better if they are regularly groomed, rinsed off and dried when muddy and have their ears maintained - cleaned and trimmed of excess hair.

I am a lab owner, stress increases the smells, but I have been told mine smell lovely, which I think is down to decent food and care.

Coffeeishot · 29/12/2025 08:43

My aunt always had labs and I never noticed them smelling was just a neutral dog smell but not overly stinky.

vanillalattes · 29/12/2025 08:49

I really think it depends on the dog. As a dog walker I walk loads of the breeds mentioned on here and none of them are particularly whiffy with the exception of an elderly cocker spaniel.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 29/12/2025 08:50

It's not always true that dogs with longer coats smell @Dearg , I suspect it might apply to long haired water dogs with an oily coat, but Pyreneans have a thick woolly coat and they don't smell.

RaraRachael · 29/12/2025 08:51

Son's greyhound doesn't smell nor does he fart much.

We had Scotties that always stank but they were mainly kept outdoors and my granda had a poodle with foul breath but maybe it was just that particular dog.

DogsAndFilms · 29/12/2025 08:53

I have a bedlington. She does not smell at all, ever.

Daisydoesnt · 29/12/2025 08:54

Two cavachons here. They don’t smell at all and neither do they shed. And they never fart! The perfect dogs IMO ❤️

Changing the subject slightly, I always feel a bit sorry for/ affronted on behalf of dogs whose owners never clean their dogs’ teeth, but then complain their breath smells. Of course it would! Can you imagine what your breath would be like if you never brushed your teeth?!

Our two relatively senior dogs’ teeth are brushed every night, and their breath doesn’t smell at all.

Kyogo67 · 29/12/2025 08:55

We have a pug that smells despite regular grooming etc. Vet told us v common with pugs and French bulldogs to suffer from this yeasty smell

Silverbirchleaf · 29/12/2025 08:55

I don’t think our lab particularly smells.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 29/12/2025 08:59

My labradoodle only smells when his ears need a clean or he is wet or ill or had flea treatment recently.

But all animal
Beds need washing. I have cats too so keeping upholstery clean is hard.

Either no animals on upholstery or clean wash the sofa a lot. Blankets help with cats

Dog is only
Allowed
On my leather sofa.
