Which dogs are the smelly ones?

Having read a recent thread about how to keep upolstery clean when you have dogs, I want to ask what dog you would choose as the least smelly.

Are shiny coats smelly? Or particular breeds? Are there some that just don't smell?

My chihuahua never smells and i bath her once a month

PeopleTheyAintNoGood · 29/12/2025 10:37

They all smell. I'm a dog owner and love my pets, but they all smell.

muddyford · 29/12/2025 10:39

I've never bathed any of mine except when they've rolled in something dreadful. Male Labs and spaniels. They smell of clean leather. They have all been neutered. Beds washed monthly in a specialist wash, coats groomed three times a week.

Loopylalalou · 29/12/2025 10:42

I don’t think it’s the breed so much as what individual dogs get up to. Rollers in yuk particularly!

Shelaydownunderthetable · 29/12/2025 10:45

I’ve had two hounds and neither of them have smelled.

I have a greyhound and he seems pretty smell-free. Apart from when he farts -
they can be so bad that even HE leaves the room.

I second this 🤣

As a non dog owner I have never been in a house with a dog that didn't smell to some degree. All dogs smell, owners just become noseblind.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 29/12/2025 11:04

I do understand the nose blindness and I'm sure our house smells of animals because we have cats as well as a dog. But different dogs do have a different smell and some are worse than others. My relatives dogs - boxer, beagle, Lab, all had a more strong doggy (and farty) odour than our PMD do. An aunt had a couple of terriers and they were very stinky, like a sour sweaty smell.

When ours have been out in the rain, they smell a bit sheepy, like a wet jumper, but when they're dry they don't smell much at all. They also aren't farty but that's down to the food.

PInkyStarfish · 29/12/2025 11:07

Hands down the smelliest dogs are St Bernard’s! I’ve never met one that didn’t stink to high heaven.

Melsy88 · 29/12/2025 11:08

I don't think all dogs smell. My dog doesn't smell and is a shihtzu/Maltese mix. Friends with poodle mixes have houses that don't smell.
Worst smell was a border terrier I looked after once. Took days to get rid of the smell after he'd gone 🤢
Golden retrievers all seem to smell too, but not as bad as that border terrier!

thornbury · 29/12/2025 11:14

Our maltipoo doesn't usually smell at all. He gets brushed daily and bathed every 2 weeks.

chattyness · 29/12/2025 11:18

They all smell, some more than others of course. I think that dog that aren't neutered tend to smell stronger than those that are. You just have to keep up with grooming and laundry really in order to keep it down.

IME labs smell a lot. Whippets don’t smell at all.

My lab (middle aged) doesn't smell of anything beyond biscuits/naan bread*. My friend's lab (middle aged) doesn't smell. Friend 3's lab DOES smell (middle aged).

Goldies almost always smell. They can't really help it with those thick coats.

*When he gets wet he does smell, obviously. I wipe him down. I shampoo him maybe 5x a year and brush him regularly when moulting. I wash his bedding and any dog related blankets / throws once a fortnight or more in dirty weather/moulting season.

But I bet you haven't met a fully corded Komondor. Hands down the stinkiest at shows we used to go to. And they were "clean" show dogs. I cannot imagine what the working ones must smell like, suffice to say the predators probably turn tail and run as soon as they get downwind 😉

Hoppinggreen · 29/12/2025 11:25

My GR generally smells bad but he isn't allowed on the furniture

MartinCrieffsHat · 29/12/2025 11:28

They all smell. Labradors and Golden Retrievers smell particularly doggy.

pictoosh · 29/12/2025 11:34

Golden Retrievers are the smelliest dogs I know of...they shed waxy, pungent hair all the time too...sticks to everything.
I'm not against them in any way, they are handsome, intelligent, good-natured dogs as far as I can tell...but to own them, is to really love them because they are mucky and will make your house smell strongly of dawg.

PuppyMonkey · 29/12/2025 11:36

Another one here with a stinky golden retriever. He dribbles a lot and licks himself so I think a lot of it is just his saliva etc. He has some nice dog wash and he can smell nice for about half a day before the whiff comes back. He’s not allowed on furniture and he doesn’t sleep in bedroom or etc, he’s got a nice spot in the conservatory.

VanGoSunflowers · 29/12/2025 11:38

Actually saying that, my lab’s coat smells lovely and I don’t think my house has a doggy smell (I’ve asked people who come over who would definitely tell me if it did!)
I do pretty well with keeping on top of cleaning and I give him a bit of a wash after a very muddy walk or one that has involved rivers or lakes!
BUT my car definitely smells of dog. But then he’s always in it after a walk when he is minging and I haven’t cleaned it for months 😂
And his farts are rancid!

80smonster · 29/12/2025 11:40

All of them. Poodles definitely smell.

pictoosh · 29/12/2025 11:41

Have known lots of lab and spaniel owners in my time (grew up in the country) and have never particularly noted an overly doggy smell in their homes.

intrepidpanda · 29/12/2025 11:43

All dogs smelll. I can smell if someone has a dog as soon as I walk in.
However the 2 houses I struggled to even stay in for a few minutes had yorkshire terriers and Scottish terriers.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/12/2025 11:43

Every golden retriever I've ever known has been smelly. They get worse as they get older though, so youngsters aren't as bad. My Patterdale isn't especially smelly, she has an extremely close coat so she doesn't really have that 'doggy' smell. She does, however, usually smell of fox poo, hedgehog poo, cow poo or whatever was available to roll in.

pictoosh · 29/12/2025 11:48

Oh aye - Westies are really smelly. Forgot about them...they were very much an 80s dog weren't they? Everyone's granny had a westie. Again with the waxy coat...and they always seem to have that stinky brown stuff around their muzzles, which makes me gip even though I want to like them.
Wouldn't have one.

LauraHopkins · 29/12/2025 11:49

My friend has had a couple of English bulldogs and, holy moly, they ponged. I could smell the doggy smell standing outside her front door.
