Which dogs are the smelly ones?

Having read a recent thread about how to keep upolstery clean when you have dogs, I want to ask what dog you would choose as the least smelly.

Are shiny coats smelly? Or particular breeds? Are there some that just don't smell?

I've got 2 cockerpoo's...one doesn't smell and the other absolutely stinks 😂

Our Scottish Deerhound does not smell at all and I brush him regularly

Honestly I think that’s unlikely. You’d need to be away for a while and come back really to tell, but in my experience hounds are more pungent.

NormasArse · 29/12/2025 23:00

One of ours is a collie/lab cross. She smells like sweaty feet.

NNforthispost · 29/12/2025 23:01

Cockers have more sebaceous glands (I think) so they’re a bit more oily. Mine is whiffy if she isn’t bathed weekly, and I r groom her every day otherwise her ears would get matted. She’s a beauty though and such a lovely temperament, and very good with other pets and young children.

My friend has a springer and it’s not as stinky as mine would be (if I didn’t bathe her).

Fingalscave · 29/12/2025 23:09

My friend had a poodle then a cavalier King Charles and neither smelled. She groomed them regularly. She then got a golden retriever and it smells a lot and her house absolutely stinks. I've often heard her say her house doesn't smell doggy, so she must not be able to smell it.

My chihuahua never smells and i bath her once a month

Same, I would say she's a medium hair (not short but not super long) and she doesnt smell at all. My other mixed breed dog does a little sometimes, he is part chi

All dogs smell to some degree. My border collie really pongs at times, he tends to have cheesy paws! But his ears always smell lovely 😂

Fatiguedwithlife · 30/12/2025 03:34

Our Patterdale has awful breath but you can only smell that when he pants in your face Envy
his coat is usually okay, unless he’s rolled in something
the collie smells much more doggy
i had tenants in my house with a lab and the whole place absolutely STANK I had the carpets professionally cleaned but even the laminate had absorbed the doggy smell EnvyEnvy

It depends really how sensitive you are to smell.

All dogs smell IMO, some people will always be aware of it in your home even if you aren’t, depends what’s important to you.

abracadabra1980 · 30/12/2025 04:00

I have a Newfoundland and a Labrador. Lab doesn't smell at all - Newfoundland in winter always has that 'dog smell' as her coat is so long and often wet/been rinsed. I thank God for my selection of outdoor taps, including a hot one, every day as shampooing her is quick and easy and then she smells GORGEOUS!

mellongoose · 30/12/2025 05:34

Old springers can really pong!

we currently have a lab with a really wirey oily coat (more like a Chesapeake). He can be smelly if we don’t keep on top of his beds. We have hard floors downstairs (he’s not allowed upstairs) and he’s not allowed on the furniture.

Those saying diet helps. What do you recommend? Ours is allergic to all kibble!

OutOfSynnc · 30/12/2025 06:06

We have a poodle, she only smells when she is wet.

WarmGreyHare · 30/12/2025 06:12

My Vizslas don't smell doggy. Extremely short coat. I imagine the same would apply for most pointers but I haven't sniffed them!
HOWEVER, they are NOT a suitable breed for anyone who doesn't REALLY want one.
Highly needy and sensitive and clingy (I love them, but would not recommend them if the only reason was a short coat)

Barleycat · 30/12/2025 06:19

All dogs smell to me.

I've never had a smelly dog.But I've never had a pure breed either.apart from an ex breeding pomeranian that I had at the same time as one that was left behind by travellers that had parked on the grass verge outside where i lived... My current dog I picked up on the streets of Tunisia and brought to UK.again..non smelly..but I'm very particular with bedding and wash weekly.

We’ve got a Maltipoo, doesn’t smell or shed

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 30/12/2025 09:10

Every house has a smell, whether you have a dog or not. It might be because you don't open windows very often, or you regularly cook strong smelling foods, or use plug-in air fresheners, or have other pets, or a just a combination of the natural smells of the people living there. It's not like every dog household = pongy and every non-dog household = smells of nothing / smells delightful. There's always a spectrum. As a PP said above, it's about a range of factors.

ArcticBells · 30/12/2025 09:10

I had a border terrier to stay for just one night and the house stank of dog afterwards.

I am a dog lover but most owners are oblivious to how much their house smells!

SkaterGrrrrl · 30/12/2025 09:21

All dogs are smelly. Sorry but it's true.

If you visit a friend with a dog, their house smells of dog.

ZenLikeAlways · 30/12/2025 09:56

My lab doesn’t smell bad. My friend’s lab bloody stinks!!!

But human houses smell a lot less than dog houses!

Anybody making regular home visits as part of their job will tell you that this is not true.

Ohcrap082024 · 30/12/2025 10:20

My show cocker can be a right stinker. Long ears, fluffy belly and tail. Loves rolling in all sorts of muck.

dms1 · 30/12/2025 10:39

I have two cocker spaniels. One sheds a lot but isn’t smelly. The other is very stinky & farts a lot. (She’s 15)

GoldenGail · 30/12/2025 11:33

It also depends a lot on what you feed them. I’ve found raw fed ones have far less body odour x
