Which dogs are the smelly ones?

Having read a recent thread about how to keep upolstery clean when you have dogs, I want to ask what dog you would choose as the least smelly.

Are shiny coats smelly? Or particular breeds? Are there some that just don't smell?

My Border Collie doesn't smell in general, only if she's been in something if that makes sense? She's never been keen on the whole rolling in fox poo thing, so that's not an issue, she never chooses to do anything smelly and her actual body and fur smell fine (she usually smells of fresh air really as lies outside 'checking' everything for hours).

She also has zero interest in our beds or sofas, but they can all be trained that way (she's just never bothered). She's such an easy dog, perfect breed, asks for nothing, always happy - and definitely not whiffy (or maybe I just can't tell!). Sheds like a bugger though.

I have a greyhound and he seems pretty smell-free. Apart from when he farts -
they can be so bad that even HE leaves the room.

😂😂😂

Same!! Breath stinks too needs more teeth out.
invest in throws and wash blankets weekly and bedding and dog often. No issues then.

Had golden retriever lovely dog she never smelled once. Kept clean and brushed. Friend had Jack Russell bit smelly though.

Firsttimemummy9724 · 29/12/2025 19:49

I have a springer cross weimaraner and she doesn't smell at all, so much so people haven't even noticed we have a dog sometimes because she doesn't leave much to any fur either eventhough she is allowed everywhere but the bed (because she's too big)

I have two German shepherds. One occasionally smells, the other never does. They both eat the same food, both live the same life.

Goddessoftheearth · 29/12/2025 20:03

Feed a good high quality diet and very few dogs will stink. I have a spaniel who doesn’t smell at all. My parents have a lab who doesn’t smell. I previously had a German Shepherd who also didn’t smell. All these dogs have (had) minimal baths - fox poo sessions and muddy walks aside - but are fed really good diets. My spaniel also has probiotics which helps with smelly ears.

Spinger spaniels absolutely stink, their coats and their wind.

Ours doesn’t - he’s not smelly at all, either coat or wind. If he’s eaten something that’s not his normal dog food (so kitchen scraps) he will fart and it does stink. Feed a good diet = non smelly dog!

Jumpers4goalposts · 29/12/2025 20:16

My lab isn’t smelly… but his farts stink. My dax is long haired and doesn’t smell. They are not quite young though. I think if your worried about a dogs smell though you probably shouldn’t get a dog.

All dogs smell if you don’t bath them

I very rarely bath mine unless he’s rolled in something unmentionable or uncovered in mud and he doesn’t smell bad, he just smells faintly like a dog which he am happy to accept as I chose to spend my life with a dog.

All dogs smell. And roll in poo and dead animals, eat horse shit, wallow in mud, throw up on the carpet.

Best to be prepared for the reality imo!

My staffy used to eat my cats shit!.. and yes her breath stank!

Redragtoabull · 29/12/2025 20:58

Not a dog owner but no matter what type of dog lives in a home I visit, I will know they have a dog before the front foot is opened, not because of barking for the wiseguys out there lol. We have 2 house and litter trained bunnies, I'm very consciencous as although, our female doesn't smell at all, the male can go from smelling like a new born baby, to car air freshener, as he smells right now, or pure marijuana, the latter being so potent, you'd think someone had been smoking a blunt in here

RanchRat · 29/12/2025 21:09

I have a lovely Goldie, I would say she does not smell, but suspect we all whiff a bit doggy.

Hounds

Our Scottish Deerhound does not smell at all and I brush him regularly

Ilovesunshine22 · 29/12/2025 21:25

French bull dogs!

Incelebration · 29/12/2025 21:27

If you want a dog that doesn't smell, doesn't eat disgusting things and doesn't roll in disgusting things, get a cat. They don't bark either. The only thing my cat smells of is biscuits.

lilybit2025 · 29/12/2025 21:37

We have a dachshund and she has never ever smelt. We wash her once a month and we regularly wash all of our sofa covers, blankets, bedding etc and everyone who comes over wouldn't know we have a dog as it has never smelt. They aren't a smelly breed at all.

Also to add, I'm a clean freak, I hover the entire house daily so no fur is ever sitting in the carpet. Obviously this isn't necessary but I know that is a must if you want a dog smell free home.

Dogs smell. So do cats. Etc etc.

Aghhhhhhhhhh · 29/12/2025 22:02

All dogs stink, doesnt matter the breed. Any none dog owner could walk into a dog owners home and instantly smell dog. Dog owners become nose blind to it.

I have nothing against dogs, but like any animal they do stink especially when they've been on a walk in the rain or had a bath, carpets/furnishings often have that 'wet dog smell' from it.

If you want a dog youll have to accept that means having a smelly house im afraid.

Curryingfavour · 29/12/2025 22:14

I have a Lakeland terrier ( like Cath Kidston Stanley 😍) who smells when wet or when he needs his ears cleaned .
I keep my house really clean but some items of furniture that are old , and that my dogs liked to sit on , definitely smell

Joystir59 · 29/12/2025 22:16

Cocker spaniels smell. I think mine smells wonderful but it's probably a marmite situation.

We never bath ours. Too much bathing ruins their coat because it strips away the natural oils. They get brushed daily in moulting season, otherwise a couple of times a week. No smell unless wet, when they smell a bit sheepy.
I do have a clean breed that isn't given to rolling in shit or dead stuff, however, and that probably helps.

Joystir59 · 29/12/2025 22:17

Our dogs don't go on the furniture so only their (washable) beds and blankets smell.

DramaAlpaca · 29/12/2025 22:22

I don't think my springer smells, but he almost certainly does. All dogs do. My lad's natural whiff is minimised by being sent for a swim in a nearby lake at least once a week.

The worst one I've encountered? A friend's basset hound. Oh my word, the pong!
