Which dogs are the smelly ones?

Having read a recent thread about how to keep upolstery clean when you have dogs, I want to ask what dog you would choose as the least smelly.

Are shiny coats smelly? Or particular breeds? Are there some that just don't smell?

OP posts:

Spinger spaniels absolutely stink, their coats and their wind.

Hollyhobbi · 29/12/2025 15:13

Basset Hounds are the smelliest dogs on earth!

redboxer321 · 29/12/2025 15:16

If your dog is farting a lot, it might be an idea to look at their diet.
Mine farts on occasion but only if she's eaten something that doesn't agree with her.

The ones that aren’t cleaned and groomed and don’t have their blankets washed frequently.

I have a short coated border collie and he doesn't smell.

Oh I had a short coated border collie he didn't smell and he hated the bath.

Our cocker spaniel doesn't smell, as long as we keep her teeth and ears clean, but turn she's not a roller and hates mud.

Abc1weabc1 · 29/12/2025 16:50

I have 2 raw fed staffordshire bull terriers.
No smell at all

DS’s wonderful black lab makes my car absolutely stink. He’s lovely though, I think you need a big house and lots of hard floors to have a lab. Carpets just soak up the stinkiness.

We do have an appropriately sized house for a big dog, all hard floors downstairs and I shampoo the rugs with the change in seasons and air rooms daily. He's not allowed upstairs. It does make a difference. No doubt my house does smell like a dog lives here but it isn't "doggy" like some houses are.

ByronKoala · 29/12/2025 17:32

They all smell but spaniels are the absolute worst in my experience - our neighbours have a pair of Irish Water Spaniels & you can quite literally smell them before you see them!! Lovely breed but I couldn’t cope with that. We have a 3yo golden retriever after a 10 year hiatus from owning dogs and I have to admit that I forgot how much I hate dog smell.. DDog is bathed weekly, blankets and bed washed frequently etc but there’s still a distinct scent.

Any dog owner that tells you their dog doesn’t smell has just gone nose blind to it!!

Old spaniels really smell. At least in my experience they're fine until they get to about 9 or 10, then turn into these really shaggy, dishevelled, farty, dribbly stink bombs. Unfortunately, you tend to be pretty fond of them by then, so you put up with it.

Golden retrievers don't smell (unless they've been rolling...), and have teflon coats so are quickly clean and dry. This does however mean the dirt goes onto carpets, furniture etc - and they shed horrendously so your entire house and wardrobe will be yellow and hairy.

Would guess short hair would be less smelly though, we had a rescue once who was part whippet and don't remember him smelling at all. Or my grandparents' lab. My dad's leonberger absolutely stinks.

I’ve owned GRs for nearly my entire adult life (current one is no. 5!) and I can attest to the fact that whilst not as bad as some breeds, they definitely do smell. Quick drying coat is very handy though since they all seem to be a magnet to water/puddles 🙈

landlordhell · 29/12/2025 17:40

DSis has had a lab and it was smelly and it liked to eat everything g including other dog’s poo!
We have a rescue mixed bread which is a lot like a cocker poo and she rarely smells.

landlordhell · 29/12/2025 17:44

A friend had a Basset hound and it was sooo stinky!

VikingBird · 29/12/2025 17:58

We’ve had:
Dalmation (fragrant)
Beagle (very stinky)
Border Collie (also fragrant - long haired too!) - but sadly his teeth went bad leading to poisonous breath in old age (yes, we did brush but he had a genetic issue)

But - I’d put up with any of it to have the life enhancing benefits of my pups 🙂

VikingBird · 29/12/2025 18:01

Oh - and our son has a (delicate, pretty) Husky - she’s totally stink free!

Jetandianto · 29/12/2025 18:11

It largely comes down to what they are fed. A strict diet of highest quality dry food should minimise the risk of unwanted smells

applebee33 · 29/12/2025 18:12

My bulldog smells like popcorn and not in a good way . He always stinks no matter how well he is cleaned

Sharptonguedwoman · 29/12/2025 18:15

Grooming and the occasional bath help whatever the dog. Rugs, blankets and beds need washing very frequently. Older dogs and those with dodgy teeth do smell.

DiscoDown18 · 29/12/2025 18:21

We regularly look after MIL's westiepoo and his coat and breath smell badly to me but my DP is nose blind to it. I looked after my sister's lab yesterday and she commented that he was very 'doggy smelling' when she came in yet I hadn't noticed. So maybe I only find certain dog smells offensive!

I agree, having just said my greyhounds don’t smell(!), that’s it’s probably true that no dog is totally free of odour issues. However, some dogs are vastly better than others. Especially short haired breeds. And some sighthounds that don’t produce the oils that result in the typical ‘doggie’ smell.

OP - Aside from the coat/breath/flatulence, which can be helped with dental care and diet, keeping the smell out of soft furnishings is a huge part of it. Like washing any bedding super regularly and either keeping them off sofas or having washable covers. I like to think that when people enter our house they aren’t greeted by a doggie smell because we work hard to keep on top of it. I have a very house proud friend with a vizsla and there is honestly no smell whatsoever in their house. And I even know someone with several dogs who is super clean and their house doesn’t smell either. I haven’t met all of their dogs though so can’t say that none of the dogs do up close!

It’s a multi factorial issue 😂 Worth it for the cuteness and unconditional love in my opinion ❤️

wheresmymojo · 29/12/2025 18:24

My short-haired GSD barely smells at all (and others have commented on it specifically so not me being nose blind).

Not just her fur, but her breath doesn’t smell and she hardly ever passes wind - to the point that the occasional time it makes her jump because she’s not sure what it is!

wheresmymojo · 29/12/2025 18:26

TBH I’m very lucky as on top of not smelling she also hates puddles and actively avoids them so stays clean that way too.

However twice a year she sheds for around six weeks and that’s fairly horrendous in a different way…

Talkinrubbishagain · 29/12/2025 18:29

It depends on how you keep them as well as the breed.
Nowadays bathing dogs fairly often doesn’t hurt as shampoos are of much higher quality, and mostly they live indoors.
Keep their bedding washed, and put washable throws on furniture if the dog is allowed on.
What you feed is also important …some dogs react to different things making them smell yeasty (ears and feet) or fart.
Gundogs, some hounds can have folds around the mouth where food is trapped. Daily wiping here.
