Which dogs are the smelly ones?

Having read a recent thread about how to keep upolstery clean when you have dogs, I want to ask what dog you would choose as the least smelly.

Are shiny coats smelly? Or particular breeds? Are there some that just don't smell?

Golden Retrievers

As a non-dog owner (grew up on a farm with dogs) I'd say all dogs smell sometimes depending on what they are doing and how well looked after they are but what really matters is do you keep your house clean enough for it not to smell of dog? I've known houses that stink to high heaven of dog and others that don't smell at all despite having multiple dogs.

My beddy lurcher doesn’t smell too much, apart from his cheesy biscuit feet, and his farts.’

I have podencos (a sight hound breed). They have short coats and don’t smell much (apart from the farting..)

Oh hi fellow Pod owner.

My fox terriers emit a certain whiff. My Peekapoochi, odour free.

Lots of dog owners are “nose blind” so you can’t tell much from this thread if you want unbiased responses!

In my experience, Labrador’s are pongy. Red setters too. Schnauzers need bathing regularly. Boxers are not too bad but all dogs in my experience, benefit from regular baths!

As dogs get older, bath teeth cause awful smell and so do long uncared for ears. It csn be stomach churning.

If in doubt, assume all dogs smell. If not when young, believe me, they will eventually for one reason or another.

GAJLY · 29/12/2025 09:07

Only the poodles don’t smell. I have a cross and he smells sometimes but has regular washes and grooms.

My experience of Bedlingtons is that they smell.

Work on the assumption if you get a dog it will smell.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 29/12/2025 09:17

All dogs smell - people just go noseblind to it. Some breeds are worse than others - hounds, retrievers etc - and some have particularly offensive orders (such as grease) but all dogs smell.

PeachBlossom1234 · 29/12/2025 09:20

I have a pug and she smells a lot, she’s yeasty and sweaty…..I’ve also noticed that everyone is allergic to her. My other breed is Tibetan Spaniel and they don’t smell, and people aren’t allergic, they do get damp on walks though

Dunnocantthinkofone · 29/12/2025 09:23

All dogs smell. And roll in poo and dead animals, eat horse shit, wallow in mud, throw up on the carpet.

Best to be prepared for the reality imo!

Lavenderosemary · 29/12/2025 09:24

My Chinese crested is smelly unless bathed frequently. My chihuahua doesn't. My collie wasn't at all smelly when she was younger, but shes quite pongy in her older age!

Wishitwasstraightforward · 29/12/2025 09:37

Most dogs smell to some degree. Those which have naturally oily coats more so in general.

Please bear in mind that in many cases this smell is part of being a dog. Even healthy well groomed dogs, on excellent diets, with no teeth or ear issues will smell a bit.

If this causes someone distress then maybe dog ownership isn't ideal for them. Dogs aren't dolls or toys, and most of them also naturally do things which some humans find gross like sniffing each others' bottoms, enjoying mud, producing smelly poo, licking their own genitals etc..

For many breeds frequent baths, especially with grease busting shampoo, are not good for their skin or coat. The oil in Labradors' coat is part of their make up, stripping it out can affect coat health, waterproofing and skin.

scotlands · 29/12/2025 09:39

All dogs smell at times. They shit, fart, burp and pee and drag dirt home on their paws.

LateMumma · 29/12/2025 09:54

Spaniels definitely stink, not helped by their love of rolling in anything long y

nondrinker1985 · 29/12/2025 09:56

Sorry but as a non dog owner I smell my friends houses with dogs and they all smell of dog from labs, to cockerpoos, various doodles, spaniels, collies etc they all smell of dog but they can’t smell it but to me it’s so strong.

crocodilesandwich · 29/12/2025 10:03

All of them , just some are worse than others!

VanGoSunflowers · 29/12/2025 10:07

Silverbirchleaf · 29/12/2025 08:55

I don’t think our lab particularly smells.

Mine doesn’t either. Actually I think he smells delicious 😂 (unless he’s just been in the river or rolled in fox poo)

I don’t know if it’s as simple as which breed all though I could be wrong. I know so many dogs owners, ranging from Greyhounds, to GSDs, to terriers, to labs to Rottweilers and none of them have smelly dogs or smelly homes.

dylexicdementor11 · 29/12/2025 10:10

keep in mind that even the loveliest smelling dog may enjoy eating poo/rotten fish etc and vomit it all up in your bed! I speak from experience- unfortunately . 🤣

OverlyFragrant · 29/12/2025 10:11

All dogs can have smelly ears and paws that absolutely honk.

saveforthat · 29/12/2025 10:13

I think dogs that drool smell the most. Drool smells awful. Our Goldie drooled and of course it gets on their toys bedding etc. so all should be washed regularly.

Balloonhearts · 29/12/2025 10:13

Most don't smell if you feed them good quality food and brush/bath them regularly. I had labs who never smelt. I'd often get comments that you wouldn't know, walking into my house, that I had two dogs.

Buttcraic · 29/12/2025 10:14

I think they all stink and it just depends how hard you work to keep on top of it, and its obviously easier to keep on top of small ones. I spend a tonne of time washing bedding, hoovering, mopping, wiping and have a dedicated room for drying off after walks but probably only just manage to keep it 'bearable'. I bet a non doggy person would dub my house doggy smelling.

PodMom · 29/12/2025 10:20

My Podengo didn’t smell.
my cavachon doesn’t smell
my greyhound didn’t smell, apart from terrible farts.

ime Yorkies always stink, often of piss. I’d never get one due to every one I’ve met stinking so bad.
