Which dogs are the smelly ones?

Having read a recent thread about how to keep upolstery clean when you have dogs, I want to ask what dog you would choose as the least smelly.

Are shiny coats smelly? Or particular breeds? Are there some that just don't smell?

I have one stinky dog, and one who doesn't smell at all.

Guess which is which 🤣

All dogs are smelly. Disgusting creatures!

OtherS · 29/12/2025 11:57

Old spaniels really smell. At least in my experience they're fine until they get to about 9 or 10, then turn into these really shaggy, dishevelled, farty, dribbly stink bombs. Unfortunately, you tend to be pretty fond of them by then, so you put up with it.

Golden retrievers don't smell (unless they've been rolling...), and have teflon coats so are quickly clean and dry. This does however mean the dirt goes onto carpets, furniture etc - and they shed horrendously so your entire house and wardrobe will be yellow and hairy.

Would guess short hair would be less smelly though, we had a rescue once who was part whippet and don't remember him smelling at all. Or my grandparents' lab. My dad's leonberger absolutely stinks.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 29/12/2025 12:42

I think that's true of most old dogs tbh @OtherS. Once they get past a certain age, they all get a bit whiffy. Lucky we love them, eh?

unsync · 29/12/2025 12:57

My Staffie was smelly, but that was because he farted a lot. Just bear that in mind too. His paws smelt like popcorn though.

I have seen you post them before and I love them i am sure they not stinky at all .

Our cavapoo smells, because he has very yeasty ears. It's a constant battle.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 29/12/2025 13:09

I have a White German Shepherd and she doesn't smell. She also has some kind of magic self cleaning fur, because mud just seems to evaporate off her.

My GR looks clean, mud just seems to drop off him but he does smell

SuperGinger · 29/12/2025 13:19

We had a lab and jack russel growing up and they just smelt of dog, it wasn't bad but there was a distinct smell. I loved kissing our labs ears. I always think animals smell nicer after they've been sunbathing, cats as well as dogs.

pixie1345 · 29/12/2025 13:36

German shepherds smell

It's not always true that dogs with longer coats smell @Dearg , I suspect it might apply to long haired water dogs with an oily coat, but Pyreneans have a thick woolly coat and they don't smell.

I agree @CoubousAndTourmaIet , my Romanian rescue has a thick, longer coat but no smell at all but my Boston cross can be quite wiffy and she’s very short coated.
The smelliest dogs in my experience are labs, spaniels, JRTs, most very wiry short-coated dogs are the smelliest.

My retrievers never smelled, although I may have missed it as they loved to roll in things like slurry which possibly masked their natural scent... The things you put up with for the love of a dog, eh 😂

And the leonberger always stank, even as a baby. Never tried to move away from a puppy until I met him! The change in the poor spaniels was remarkable though, from sleek and shiny to smelly yeti, seemingly overnight. Same thing happened to me though so I can't really talk!

Sorry but as a non dog owner I smell my friends houses with dogs and they all smell of dog from labs, to cockerpoos, various doodles, spaniels, collies etc they all smell of dog but they can’t smell it but to me it’s so strong.

Same. All dogs smell.

we have a cat. I can’t smell him but I bet guests can.

Pyreneans are like that. It's embarrassing sometimes, returning from a walk through the woods with a sparkling white dog. They actually walk around puddles... My partner tells everyone they're Teflon coated 😂

Yorkie stinks but Saint does not.
However, as a fellow giant owner I could be a tad biased...🤔

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 29/12/2025 14:26

Poodles are a good shout. They have hair instead of fur, which is why they’re good for people with certain types of pet allergies, and perhaps why some of them have “less” smell. But you still need to groom them regularly, clean their ears, and brush their teeth. The amount of dog owners who don’t brush their dogs’ teeth (imagine how your mouth would smell if you ate dog food and then never brushed) seems quite large.

TimeForATerf · 29/12/2025 14:28

DS’s wonderful black lab makes my car absolutely stink. He’s lovely though, I think you need a big house and lots of hard floors to have a lab. Carpets just soak up the stinkiness.

OrsolaRosso · 29/12/2025 14:34

I hate dog smell, and was once put off a house I was viewing due to the overpowering smell of dog.
A friend has a large labradoodle which is very smelly, but she admits she doesn't bathe it very often.
My sister, on the other hand, has a Viszla, and he doesn't smell at all.

mugglewump · 29/12/2025 14:35

We used to have a working cocker ,who didn't really smell apart from her paws which smelled like popcorn. We now have a golden retriever, who stinks in comparison. We keep throws over all our furniture, which we wash weekly to avoid the house smelling of dog.

I have a greyhound and he seems pretty smell-free. Apart from when he farts -
they can be so bad that even HE leaves the room.

Haha. I concur, having two of them. The sweetest dogs imaginable and no smell from their coats. Very flatulent though!

All dogs smell. And roll in poo and dead animals, eat horse shit, wallow in mud, throw up on the carpet.

Best to be prepared for the reality imo!

Ours won’t even walk on damp leaves!

Heyhelga · 29/12/2025 14:55

All dogs smell it's just dog owners are nose blind to it.
