Dogs with human names

Martin. I just met a GSD called Martin.

Absolutely love dogs with human names but I think Martin for a GSD might be the best yet. Almost pipped by Gerald the Chihuahua.

Anyone else met any dogs with great human names?

I’ve met a staffy named Roy.
and also a Timothy and Susan 🤣

gethighlikeplanes · 04/06/2025 09:36

My neighbours dogs are called Sheila and Agnes. They are poodles (the really big ones) and the names suit them.

ChimpyChops · 04/06/2025 09:36

My dog is Jerry but when he is being particularly sassy he gets Jeremy!

Zuve · 04/06/2025 09:37

My cat was called George. He was a cool dude and good with girl cats. But after he had the snip preferred to chill out in front of the TV or on my lap

Notjustdogs · 04/06/2025 09:38

Sorry for sneaking in with cat stories. We've had Trevor, Sid, and George. My favourite was Phil. We were in the waiting room at the vets and the vet popped her head in and said 'Phil'. The man sitting next to us stood up and without missing a beat the vet looked at human Phil, pointed at feline Phil and said 'not you, him' 😂

I wonder when The Cult of Dogs will end? Human names for animals are part of the problem IMO.

Part of what problem? 😂

Personally I can't stand silly pet names like Fluffy and Cookie. Lots of animals now have human names.

I have a Fiona and a Dave (both Belgian Malinois’) and a Stanley (a Kangal). I also had a Logan (also a Malinois).

I think it goes without saying, I love human names for dogs.

My lovely dog was Mabel.

I had a Mabel too, such a sweet girl and the name really suited her.

I live near a couple of gobby dachshunds called Boris and Betty. They are hilarious.

Every cat should be called Dennis.

😀

brushingboots · 04/06/2025 09:42

I know a chap with a pointer called Steve, and a lady with a spaniel called Alice. So sweet. Meanwhile ours is named after a bridge in Holland so rather the opposite.

honeyfox · 04/06/2025 09:47

When I was a teenager donkeys years ago we had a cat called Emma. Many years after, discovered she was a boy but Emmet never really stuck!

I don't think The Doghouse is the right area of the site for you. There are plenty others. 🙄

I once met a bull mastiff called Matilda. She was huge and had the beautiful manners and confidence of a dog with absolutely nothing to prove, so the name of a queen was the icing on the cake really. Matilda would also suit a cat, especially of the large-and-in-charge lady cat variety. As soon as you heard it, you'd know someone important was in the room 😁

Morningmorning · 04/06/2025 09:51

I know a St Bernard called Margaret which I think is great!

StupidTrolleyThing · 04/06/2025 09:52

I know a Dave, Brian, Eddie, and a Ronald.

sonoonetoldyoulifewasgonnabethisway · 04/06/2025 09:53

I've had dogs called Maggie, Darren, Lucy. I know a dog called Peter.

BunnyLake · 04/06/2025 09:53

I like human names on dogs, especially boy dogs as those names just seem funnier.

My (female) dog has a unisex human name but it’s not a funny one (think Sam type thing).

BunnyLake · 04/06/2025 09:55

I always thought Derek was a good name for a dog.

YouLookLikeClaraBow · 04/06/2025 09:57

I know a pug called Dylan 😁

I always thought Derek was a good name for a dog.

Derek will forever take me back to DH's first year of teaching primary school (about 20 years ago) when he did creative writing with his class, and one of them wrote a piece about "Prince Derek". I don't know why it tickled me quite as much as it did, but it has stuck with me.

But yes, fab name. Along with @sonoonetoldyoulifewasgonnabethisway with Darren - which is the best name ever for a dog. Congratulations!

Oh that’s cute too.

This is such a great thread! 🐶

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 04/06/2025 10:01

Oh phew. I thought this was going to be a thread bitching about dogs with human names, and I was all ready to defend my favourite dog!

When I was a kid there was a dog called Clive at the local rugby club. Clive had an "owner", lets call him Steve, but unlike most dogs, Clive did not declare undying loyalty to him.

No, Clive's allegiance lay with whoever had last given him a crisp. And the allegiance lasted exactly as long as the time until the next crisp. Steve initially found this hilarious, but soon found that he was having to buy packets of crisps just to get Clive to stop staring adoringly at the latest crisp giver and just bloody come home.

The crisp loyalty was surprisingly long lasting as well. Once, Clive didn't notice the latest crisp giver go home. Eventually, he reluctantly went home with Steve. The next day Steve and Clive went on holiday. Clive moped throughout, having been ripped cruelly from the person he loved most in the world. Steve, in a fit of stubbornness refused to give him a crisp for the entire fortnight they were away.

2 weeks later, they arrive back at the rugby club, and Clive is elated. The crisp giver is here! He bounds around for half an hour like a puppy and eventually settles down at his beloveds feet. Right up until the moment someone else gave him a crisp.

On a dog walk a few years ago I met 2 beagles called John and Greg. I thought the youngish lad walking them was having me on but my partner bumped into them months later being walked by a different person. Still John and Greg. Still makes me smile.

annonymousse · 04/06/2025 10:04

I have 2 cockapoos. Their Sunday names are Beryl and Mavis.
