Dogs with human names

Martin. I just met a GSD called Martin.

Absolutely love dogs with human names but I think Martin for a GSD might be the best yet. Almost pipped by Gerald the Chihuahua.

Anyone else met any dogs with great human names?

OP posts:

Springer Spaniel called William.

Dachshund (standard) called George.

Audrey a Corgi.

But my favourite was a terrier/57 variety dog called Dave.

HelloCheekyCat · 04/06/2025 10:54

Malcolm the cat
bruce the sausage dog

im actually a bit embarrassed by our cat’s non-human name but she was a rescue & senior so didn’t feel like we could change it

DPface · 04/06/2025 11:00

I had a rabbit called Sharon in my teens. Smile

Also I’m a bit Blush having seen my DS’ name mentioned as a dog’s name several times on this thread!

SanDimasHighSchoolFootballRules · 04/06/2025 11:01

I know people with dogs called Horace, Walter and Bernard.

I love human names for dogs.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/06/2025 11:02

Our neighbours have Barry and Trev.

DramaAlpaca · 04/06/2025 11:02

My lovely, late springer spaniel was Jessica.

And back in the day I had a beautiful cat called Tabitha - a tabby, of course.

Spanador · 04/06/2025 11:15

A man I regularly bump in to on the beach has two yellow labs called Tom & Bob. I don't know why the names suit them so much but they really do. Friends also have a springer called Dave and a bulldog called Steve

Yes, in your eyes we're all anthropomorphising, we all treat them like babies, blah de blah 🙄

Do you not see the fun in calling a cat Trevor or a dog Betty? Do we all have to name them Fluffy and Fido, just to appease the anti-pet brigade?

Why is it that dog haters are devoid of any sense of humour?

Not only that, but they specifically come to threads in the dog section just to tell us how much they hate dogs

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 04/06/2025 11:24

Does anybody know of a family somewhere out there with dogs called Catherine and Philip, and children called Towser and Fido?!

ruralwanderer · 04/06/2025 11:26

There's a Collie nearby to me called Keith 😂

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 04/06/2025 11:26

I also know a Colin.

I always give my animals non-human names, but I think that's because I have five kids and they've all got three names so I've used up all the human ones I like. Oh, no, I did have a horse called Jack, but his breeder chose his name not me.

BingoBling · 04/06/2025 11:27

A neighbour has a dog called Alan.
Some kind of terrier.

YessicaHaircut · 04/06/2025 11:29

A friend at university had a hamster called Gary Barlow. It always tickled me that it wasn’t just Gary, he had a full human name, surname and all! We of course always referred to him by his full name.

Some people are weird and seem to assume that everything is all about them.

See also the people who, whilst scrolling, see a tribute thread about a recently-deceased minor celebrity they've personally never heard of; and feel the urgent need to click on the thread to take the trouble to enlighten all of the admirers of the person about whom the thread was started that they have never heard of them!

From the other side of all this enjoyment, I have a reasonably ordinary (but not frequent) human name, and it drives me up the wall when some badly behaved poodle is addressed loudly by its owner, using my, primarily human, name. So laugh all you want, accuse people of having no sense of humour, but bear in mind that some of us use these names for their primary purpose.
I know that it works the other way, though. Somebody several generations back in my mother's family had twin boys, called Roy and Rex. I can see the logic, but one of those two regal names is more usually a dogs.

MuffinsAreJustCakesAtBreakfast · 04/06/2025 11:33

New neighbours a couple of years ago. For years I thought her husband's name was Paul.

Turns out it's the name of the dog!! 😂

Calliopespa · 04/06/2025 08:34

Every cat should be called Dennis.

my partner's brother lives next door to a cat named Séamus

GetOffTheCounter · 04/06/2025 11:39

Purely coincidentally years ago we had two dogs that were named the same names as our neighbour's two little girls. Matilda and Molly. It took us a while to realise when we called the dogs we would get a bemused 'yes?' from a 5 year old.

Hatty65 · 04/06/2025 11:41

My favourite was Joe (Cocker) and Pearl's a Springer...

Someone on here posted it I think. Also saw a comedienne once who said her friend's dog was called Ronnie Barker which I liked.

Did the penny not start to drop when you heard her encouraging him outside to have a wee and offering him a biscuit for being a good boy?!

Zimunya · 04/06/2025 11:43

We have a dog called Pete. He's a rescue, and was named in the shelter before we got him. I try not to swear in front of DD (adult now - this was ages ago), so used to say, "For Pete's sake!" when something annoyed me. This has caused much confusion with the poor dog :(

ladygindiva · 04/06/2025 11:45

Roger and Barbara 🤣

I thought my friends partner was called Alice. Alice is his dog!

A friend has a Frank. Her DS has a Nelly

They give guide dogs human names. A friend had a Connie. I know someone with an Ava and used to have a friend with a Darcy

We've had Sammy, Milly (was Gillian) and Benji / Benjamin. (was Daniel) We currently have a Molly

And I don't hate dogs. I'm not fond of them, or rather their owners, when their owners insist on... you all good owners know the sort I mean, who think its good fun to let their muddy fur babies jump all over other people, and can't or won't understand that some people don't like it.
Though there's one dog owner like that who has done a good turn in allowing her twouncollared GSDs to attack me, becuse people do understand when I say I am sorry, but since the4 GSD attack, I just can't feel comfortable with dogs.
(No damage done, but hackles up, teeth bared, and acting as a team, very scarey. For about five minutes, the owner not present, until she sauntered out of her garden and called them off. Without any acknowledgement of me, on the pavement the othher side of the public road. The only thing I knew about what to do was from the Odyssey, where Odysseus sits down on the path to deal with his swineherd's dogs. It seemed like good dog psychology, but I was pretty sure these two hadn't read Homer or been trained by a three thousand year old Greek swineherd. I tried very hard not to feel afraid because they would smell that. I went and reported the incident to the police. Subsequently I learned that the owner had a reputation for letting them off lead by the children's play area in the park. I don't know why that hadn't been reported.)
I think the relationships people can have with their dogs can be amazing, particularly the intelligent ones like collies, and I guess that where there is that sort of connection using a name like Rover or Spot would seem demeaning.
