if I had the time and the money to be obsessed with myself like they are in that film I'd have either no kids or plenty babysitters

I'm fed up hearing the media going on about this stupid film as if we are all interested in it

bag'o'shite if you ask me

Oh Masseuse, I didn't know you were a fan of SATC! So we share 2 out of 3 obsessions

I think that by series 5 the character of Miranda got really complex, I got totally moved by her giving a bath to her Mil who suffered from dementia (I think), such a compassionate gesture.

I saw the first movie on Sky, and though I found it entertaining, it didn't really have the depth of the series (also because US mayors can't be as daring as HBO)

Rockbird · 27/05/2010 21:32

I have never seen it, or Friends, the Housewife thing, the Glee thing or any of them. Life is too short.

TheMysticMasseuse · 27/05/2010 21:41

Yes Franca I had forgotten about that. It was a powerful and anything but shallow scene.

I wish I could convince you to share my third obsession

Never watched the series

Saw the first film thought it was rubbish, sorry

Mingg · 27/05/2010 21:54

The first film wasn't all that but the series is well worth watching

zazen · 27/05/2010 21:58

I liked Northern Exposure.

never watched SATC, AB or DHW

zazen · 27/05/2010 21:58

AB? UB - just shows how much i know about it... off to read about Happy Valley now..

Lauriefairycake · 27/05/2010 22:02

loads of it made me sob in the series and the film - I thought there was so much of it was really touching

I'm going on my own tomorrow to watch it - and I'm having popcorn benandjerrys

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 27/05/2010 22:18

there are a few of the episodes that everytime I watch them, I cry.

  1. The one where Mirandas mother dies. It gets me everytime where Miranda cries in the dressing room.
  2. The one where Big has his heart operation, it just gets me
  3. The second to last one (the bit where Big is asking what he should do, and the girls tell him to go get Carrie)
  4. The last episode, not where Carrie and Big are reunited, but other little bits; where Magda kisses Miranda after she bathes her MIL, where Charlotte is sobbing over knowing they were going to get a baby, and the joy where all four of them were together again.

The film I think was a little too long, but, I went to see it on my own and I really enjoyed it (the first one). Again, there are some really special points I like in the film, the pure helplessness on Carries face when Sam gives her breakfast, and I love the bit where Charlotte confronts Big.

I am going to see the second one tomorrow with DH. Looking forward to it, almost as much as watching Eclipse

BloodyBen10 · 27/05/2010 22:47

Never watched the series, which were apparently SATC at its best, but saw the first film with some girlfriends. Yawn. Thought it was clothes- and man-obsessed drivel. Not interested in the sequel. Sooo much more looking forward to Toy Story 3.

fishingboat · 27/05/2010 22:57

love love love it, can't wait to see it makes me laugh everytime... it's about 4 girls and true friendship!!!!!! can't get enough of it bring it on!!!!!!!!! xxxxxx

EmmyVonN · 28/05/2010 05:26

Four spoilt Americans in the 'exotic' middle east - I suspect it's going to irritate me.

The series was fun. The first film a disappointment. It just meandered and seemed more a platform to show off fab clothes and glam NY living. There was no story, nothing to hold my interest. And SJP is annoying.

I sound grumpy. But it is 5.20 in the morning and the birds are so fecking noisy.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/05/2010 07:21

Just over 12hrs to go

fishingboat. You have summed it up excalty!!!

All about friendship

I'm seeing it with my girlies - sorry some of you are going on your own

ChiefBrackenStomper · 28/05/2010 08:37

I don't get their version of friendship. The episode I remember which really put me off was when Carrie needed a deposit for her flat but realised she had spent it all on shoes (something like $40,000). She then had the nerve to had a go at Charlotte for not lending her $10,000 to put towards a deposit. The episode ended with Charlotte bending over backwards to apologise and beg Carrie to take $10,000 of her money which I can still remember being horrifically cringeworthy to watch.

I can understand maybe getting a bit annoyed if my own family wouldn't help me out in Carrie's situation but seriously, I know where they'd tell me to go if they that I'd blown it on clothes and shoes.

Futhermore, I'll never understand a 'friendship' that sets conditions and expectations based on MONEY. Carrie was totally willing to sell up her friendship for Charlotte because she couldn't get her way.

The SATC women just remind me too much of my own friends who I gave up on when I apparently "prioritised" my son over them for not being able to go out for drinks after her was born. How on earth is that empowering? The friends I've kept love me unconditionally and are worth far more than $10,000.

MrsChemist · 28/05/2010 09:54

I've watch a few episodes by accident and it just irritated the shit out of me. I refuse to watch the films, no matter how entertaining my friends say they are.

nursie999 · 28/05/2010 12:27

I loved the series. It was fun, and everyone of my friends could see parts of ourselves in the girls. We used to have SATC evenings with cocktails. It lost its way a bit in the last series, but I stuck with it. Glad she got together with Big, but John? Eh.
I'm glad we never got to know him that well, because I suspect we wouldn't like him that much. He'd get a terrible slating on MN!

I was incredibly disappointed in the film. Sort of an extra long episode but not a very good one. And I may get struck down for saying this, but I HATED the clothes.

paulaplumpbottom · 28/05/2010 13:15

I'm not keen. Carrie gets on my nerves. She is an awful friend. How often are her friends talking about their problems when she makes sure the conversation back to hers. On many occasions she just tells them straight out that she is too busy to be dealing with their problems. Am I the only person who sees how awful she is?

expatinscotland · 28/05/2010 13:34

Carrie's a cow. Look how she treated Aidan. My sister forced me to watch some of the series once.

And she was totally desperate, too. Would drop her friends any time for some dick.

paulaplumpbottom · 28/05/2010 13:42

Expat did we just agree on something?

expatinscotland · 28/05/2010 13:47

I believe so, paula .

She was completely self-absorbed, immature and a crummy friend.

And she treated Aidan like crap.

I thought Charlotte gave her her engagement ring to use towards the deposit?

ArcticRoll · 28/05/2010 13:50

The series was great but the first film was awful and the sequel looks even worse.

Francagoestohollywood · 28/05/2010 14:17

As I said, I loved the series, but Carrie managed to get on my nerves a few times.

But Aidan was boring as hell.

expatinscotland · 28/05/2010 14:18

Yeah, but if he was boring, then dump him! Don't sleep with him and then cheat on him and string him along.

petisa · 28/05/2010 14:20

Lol at noisy birds Emmy, I thought it was just me who is grumpy about them! I have noisy Spanish birds here, shouting outside my window every morning and waking my dd early. The're so bloomin' cheerful about spring, aren't they?!

I've decided to download all the SATC series and watch them, as I only saw a episodes the first time round, and at 7 months pregnant and running around after my toddler all day I feel entitled to some light entertainment!
