if I had the time and the money to be obsessed with myself like they are in that film I'd have either no kids or plenty babysitters

I'm fed up hearing the media going on about this stupid film as if we are all interested in it

bag'o'shite if you ask me

friendships rather.

SanctiMoanyArse · 27/05/2010 18:22

I loathe sex & the city

Tried to read a freebie book by same author once- painful!

Am also not giving a damn about cheryl cole, katie price, kerry katona etc etc etc

they have no relevance to my life, nor I to them

sungirltan · 27/05/2010 18:41

love satc!

have the boxed set and everything.

fruitstick · 27/05/2010 18:47

I don't really get it either, although I don't hate it.

What I never really understood was why it was supposed to be so empowering and life affirming when they just spent their entire time talking about men, how to get them etc. Their careers etc seemed to be incidental.

Maybe it's because I never really did the whole dating thing. I much prefer Desperate Housewives, at least once they've got their men they all stop whining!

southeastastra · 27/05/2010 18:48

it was quite groundbreaking when it came out

Francagoestohollywood · 27/05/2010 18:55

I agree that their careers seemed incidental, and that they spent the whole time moaning talking about men.

But they also talk about sexuality. Female sexuality, which was rather groundbreaking (though I agree with SGB that it was mostly heterosexual).
And they talked about friendship, and female solidarity (or not), and loneliness.
And it was also about the uplifting power of chattering.

CantSupinate · 27/05/2010 18:56

I tried to watch it once (about 35 minutes).

I couldn't get over how much SJP looks like a horse. I'm not sure which end of the horse, either .

The rest seems like spoilt whinging vain New Yorkers and their spiritually empty and banal lives I say that as an avowed atheist, too ; constant endless permutations of the same theme.

And at least Desperate Housewives was funny!

SoLongAsItsHealthy · 27/05/2010 18:57

I think a lot of usually intelligent women left their brains at the door when this series came out. Men and shoes and spoiled brats. I'm sure women didn't do this fake fawning over shoes before this programme? Suddenly we all started pretending we lived for cocktails and high heels. Largely because the media pushed the agenda, I know, and we women do as we're told. But it really saddened me how many bright girls latched onto this silliness. As if it was somehow important... Kind of embarrasisng actually. What I think they really enjoyed was the bonding of a groups of girls who loved each other. But it became all about the bollocks instead. Literally...

Quite enjoy it repeated on Fiver with a glass of Baileys late at night thought

Tootlesmummy · 27/05/2010 18:59

Can't stand it and get bored by all the hype. Kim C is a mess and needs to tone down her look in the program and in real life. Sorry to all those die hard SATC fans!

Francagoestohollywood · 27/05/2010 19:07

Yes, that female bond. When the series started I had just moved to the UK and it made me miss my friends even more.

As for shoes and cocktails, well yes. But it was just good old escapism, especially after a day spent wiping small people's arses and not having a minute break.

cherrymama · 27/05/2010 20:04

Absolutely LOVE it...the clothes,the setting,the friendships,the men,the humour....everything!

And BTW you can like these things AND be intelligent - I have a degree, a very responsible job and am currently reading and enjoying Tolstoy - it's just a bit of fun!

baloothebear · 27/05/2010 20:11

I love it because I have been single for ages and it really is a film for us feisty singletons. I love the clothes, friendships, dating horror story lines and more fashion! It's kind of shallow but lots of fun and great escapism. I also love Carrie Bradshaw.

i'm not sure that happily married women would get it really.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 27/05/2010 20:13

Even if I had the time (which i don't), I'd never go to see this load of tosh.
I've read somewhere the actors themselves don't get on in RL, so it would all seem false to me.
Yawn.

Give me a good action film anyday - Prince of Persia with the yummy Jake G...(whatever his name is)
Or Clash of the Titans - all the men in leather shorts, phoarrrrr

baloothebear · 27/05/2010 20:13

Correct me if I'm wrong btw! I started watching it after my first serious relationship ended and I have been an addict ever since!

Mingg · 27/05/2010 20:39

You are wrong - I am happily married and love SATC

CheerfulYank · 27/05/2010 20:51

I do think it's shallow, and I'm happily married and don't care a bit about shoes or clothes, I don't sleep around (didn't really before I was married either.)

But.

I have a group of ridiculously close female friends, and I like watching someone who has the same.

And Aidan. ;)

SolidGoldBrass · 27/05/2010 20:53

Squeaver, that review was genius!

expatinscotland · 27/05/2010 20:54

It's about white chicks with money.

A parallel universe for me.

Can't say I've ever seen the appeal.

The trailer looked a pile of wank, though.

SoriaMoria · 27/05/2010 20:54

Must say solong I'm an intelligent woman and I loved shoes way before satc. Although I've grown out of drinking cosmos now... Is this starting to sound like a self help group? Hello, my name is SoriaMoria and I love shoes and medieval history...

Iwantscallops · 27/05/2010 20:57

I love it. It's complete escapism.

Best moments are Miranda on the bathroom floor after putting her back out, Samantha wanting to get into the swing and Carries clothes in Paris.

Iwantscallops · 27/05/2010 21:01

How could I forget about Harry wandering around Charlottes flat in the nude!

DawnAS · 27/05/2010 21:02

Nope - not the only one, never seen it!

TheMysticMasseuse · 27/05/2010 21:04

it wasn't purely heterosexual. Samantha was in a relationship with a woman and Miranda experimented.

Nor I agree with the "all fluff and no substance" part. When Carrie broke up with Aidan- it was really painful and you could see that. Miranda becoming a mother and struggling with it- very honest, down to the excess weight and dodgy hair and engorged breasts and feeling left out. Charlotte's fertility challenges- heartfelt. And even Samantha, despite being a charicature (sp?), had her painful moments- shagging Richard in the bathroom while Smith was outside was plain sordid and quite heartbreaking.

And it was (still is) a rare show which showed women being really there for each other, and having fun, and not competing with each other. And what's wrong with chatting away? As Franca says, that's uplifting in itself.

the latest series became a bit self-celebratory and went quite OTT-but it was still ironic and funny. The movie was shallow and empty and should never have been made. I am ignoring SATC2.

CheerfulYank · 27/05/2010 21:09

Also I cried my eyes out at Charlotte's last bit in the last episode.

"That;s really our baby...I know it is. That's really our baby!" tears!

lilac21 · 27/05/2010 21:09

I've never seen a single episode and have no desire to do so.
