Obviously mild spoilers in the review!

I was drawn in ... seemed as good as normal to me.

MsAlignment · 16/09/2026 20:21

I’m just back from yoga so will watch with some green tea.

The stuff with River's dad was a bit annoying last season but it was good til he turned up. I think the comedy was still there!

MsAlignment · 16/09/2026 22:04

Oh my - way better than the Guardian review suggested. I felt genuine threat all the way through. And it’s beautifully filmed.

(I was very disappointed Jonathan Pryce missed out on the Emmy he was nominated for, for this role.)

This is a bit spoiler-y (and also includes a major mistake, which I’d hope the paper will correct) - but it’s rather entertaining!

Is it possible to watch this on any other streaming service apart from Apple? 🙂

TragicMuse · 17/09/2026 13:06

We really enjoyed it! I’m enjoying the dive straight into WTF is going on? Who? How?

I’m concerned about Standish now knowing the truth.

And I just love how slippery everyone is! The constant drive to get the jump on someone, the crossing and double-crossing.

I don’t need it to be deep, I just enjoy being entertained!

Madcats · 17/09/2026 14:17

DH was out last night so I’ve had to restrain from watching Ted Lasso AND Slow Horses. I’ll try to sort a sharetoken from the Torygraph review…

CrossPurposes · 17/09/2026 15:57

Pretty major spoilers in that Guardian review, I thought! Do not read if you have only seen episode one which I assume is all of us.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/09/2026 16:08

Absolutely brilliant episode.

watching Ted Lasso straight after showed how much dross this show is 🤦‍♀️

Xiaoxiong · 17/09/2026 16:15

We loved it!! Proper belly laugh when Ho got a dart in the bum. I was a bit sad about Struan though - I was feeling sorry for him already with his sad sack karate class and desperate sales pitch, and he didn't deserve that fate.

I had read some reviews and thought Sid was turning up at some point, maybe I missed her.

Also agree that this show is so good it makes others a bit shit by comparison. I thought by season 6 it would have jumped the shark but it seems to just be getting better and better. We're also watching Vigil but this is just so much better.

CordwainerBird · 17/09/2026 16:20

I liked it. Trying to quickly read the books so I am up to speed with those as well. I’ve been rewatching for a few weeks so have all the previous seasons quite well in mind.

I think River is going to unravel a lot.

MsAlignment · 17/09/2026 16:41

I was sad about Struan too. He felt real, and the violence towards him and the second victim felt very real; not comedic, or cartoonish.

Is Kay White ever mentioned in the books? I couldn’t remember and I wasn’t sure if we were meant to know her name or not.

PrivateCapacityFanny · 18/09/2026 09:21

Not going to read the Guardian for spoilers but I thought pretty good, the music was used differently but otherwise couldn't tell there had been any changes to production people.

More divergence from the books (esp Standish) but I'm going with the flow

SomethingFun · 18/09/2026 09:28

I love it! I ignore the guardian for stuff like this - they do have some strange ideas sometimes about what constitutes as entertainment 😁 I’ve read all the books and this one is a corker of a story imho.

RalphtheMouth · 18/09/2026 10:56

Thought it was great - I was avoiding the Guardian review but saw the headlines of it saying it was getting harder to enjoy. Totally disagree. Lamb in the funeral laughing was very funny.

AlwaysExtraHot · 18/09/2026 18:03

I think it’s been going downhill since about season 4, but keep watching for Diana and her winter coats, Jackson, and the seedy, grimy, somehow beautiful London.
Yet to start season 6. I might let a few episodes accumulate so I can binge.

The silliness with the paint pot was a low point.

I'm really puzzled by Guardian reviews sometimes. I've found things that were brilliant (and also noted to be in other reviews) to be given two or three stars, and some real wanky dross to be given five. Maybe I'm not cultured enough for the Guardian, although their readers would probably feel quite smug reading that. 😀

I thought it was pretty good for a first episode.

PrivateCapacityFanny · 18/09/2026 20:54

I was thinking if River does become James Bond then that might be a good excuse to end it - the last book, although I did enjoy it, was spiralling out of control - Lamb that is.

Better to end on a high than, as series' so often do, as diminishing returns.

You not alone - I’m not sufficiently cultured for Guardian reviews either. I find them a bit po-faced.
Haven’t watched the episode yet, saving it for a less stressful week.

MsAlignment · 18/09/2026 21:23

There are other reviews!

‘seedy, grimy, somehow beautiful London’ describes it perfectly! We watched it last night and I said it DH how much I love it because…London!
