Telly addicts
Badvocthebad · 18/09/2026 22:19

I've read all the books, and the short stories, and this series combines 2 books iirc.
A lot will happen and some of it very sad.
I thought it was great, but I often wonder about Guardian tv reviews...they seem to be watching a different show to me 🤷‍♀️

the80sweregreat · 19/09/2026 06:59

Feel sorry for Standish and how Lamb goads her about her previous addiction. Now she has discovered what happened with her partner too :(
Love that it’s back though . Great tv

The silliness with the paint pot was a low point.

Oh, I didn’t mind that! I thought it was quite Slow Horses in nature.
I meant more that I’ve found Jackson’s taunting of the horses to be less funny and more plain cruel in recent seasons; River seemed to completely change personality; the season where he goes to France and confronts his dad I found incoherent… It just seemed to have lost some of its original tone and effortless brilliance.

Coe is a weird one isn’t he.
I feel I should try the books.

I think he was toned down from the books in earlier seasons actually. He is much much worse in print. The whole point of Slough House is to make the resign because it's so awful.

Lamb prevented her from being charged with treason due to her boss being a Russian spy.
Also have her a job and risked his life to save hers from a rogue tiger team.
Lamb is far more nuanced than the sweating and farting (although I do find that funny - the antithesis of James bond!)
I also found the paint pot death totally in keeping with how sometimes, silly things happen.

MsAlignment · 19/09/2026 11:45

The paint pot book was tonally very odd indeed.

One of the best opening chapters I’ve read in any novel ever (the village - it was the same book, yes?) and then just disappointing from then on. 🤷‍♀️

Ahh, re Standish. Although I do cringe when he brings up her past , drinking and so on. I suppose she knows she is lucky to keep her job and can’t say a lot back

It was a good book...the opening was amazing as you say

Badvocthebad · 19/09/2026 13:59

I'd recommend the slough house novellas.
They go into the bsck stories of some of the SH heracters lile bad sam Chapman and mollie.

So many typos!
Sorry

AlwaysExtraHot · 19/09/2026 18:21

I thought the eulogy, with all the stuff about the department of transport, was very funny 😄

I feel I should try the books.

His back story is in “Nobody Walks” , another Mick Herron book , explains a bit about him.

I got all the books for Xmas and they are great, lots of plot and decently written characters. I also think the series is a love letter to London, I always want to visit when I watch it. I feel like the guardian award stars depending on how much the art fits what is currently acceptable to the American left

I didn’t mind the paint pot - I find all the guns a bit more unbelievable seeing as though it is based here where shootouts are pretty rare.

I feel like there is going to be a conclusion to the series (of books) which I hope is really satisfying - I have high hopes.

If you haven’t watched it, the one with Emma Thompson by the same author is a decent watch too - I can’t remember the name but it’s also on Apple TV.

MsAlignment · 21/09/2026 10:24

@vjg13 - so sorry, had meant to respond! As far as I know it isn’t available elsewhere as it’s an Apple TV show.

Thanks @MsAlignmentI managed to watch the previous ones on a ropey website that no longer exists!

Down Cemetery Road.
IMO that one was a miss, although the casting was a dream.

DuncinToffee · 21/09/2026 10:57

I watched the first episode last night and thought it was very good.

I didn't like Down Cemetery Road.

‘seedy, grimy, somehow beautiful London’ describes it perfectly! We watched it last night and I said it DH how much I love it because…London!

Struan's kids martial arts class was in a place at the top of my road. I was so proud.

colouringindoors · 21/09/2026 21:26

I enjoyed it 😁 don't pay too much attention to Guardian reviews 😉

MsAlignment · 23/09/2026 16:34

Well. That was possibly one of the best episodes I’ve seen from all six seasons.

I’m really liking whatever they’re doing differently - it seems a bit less slapstick. The direction is sharper and the cinematography just glorious.

Also Shirley’s haircut is to die for.

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2026 20:16

I don’t want Standish to drink that posh wine :(
It was good today , they really are horrible the two doing the killing. Lots of dramas have a man and woman like those two :(

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2026 21:04

It is nice to watch a drama that doesn’t look like it’s filmed through plastic. It is so sharp.

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2026 21:59

Great episode

YellingAway · 23/09/2026 21:59

Wow, what an ending, was on the edge of my seat the whole way through.
