David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

I find it a bit dark, but found the volume even more difficult and had to put the volume up - even then it seemed kind of indistinct at times. Maybe I'm just getting old?!

I can't work out what time period it's meant to be set in. I thought John's phone was meant to be out-of-date and show that he wasn't really into tech, but then the decor, clothes, car etc look like decades earlier, so the phone might be really high-tech for that time.

Its just all cutesy, quirky vintage in his family. Its part of the aesthetic. Its only Lucy's car and his phone that are old and his phone is a visual gag.

Just watched ep 3..
Really enjoying it.
What intrigues me is was this all mapped out before S1 was made?

I find Lucy a very interesting character. John has been her best friend since they were children. They know each other inside out. It's obvious they care deeply for each other. And yet she married James who looks identical to her best friend. Does she not see John when she married James? I wonder if she married James because he's the more outgoing twin, James asked her first or she just wanted a way to keep John in her life. It was implied in the first series that James wasn't always very nice to John so surely Lucy knew that being John's best friend?

Im married to an identical twin and I was at school with them both, they are very different in personality and I dont see my husband when I look at his twin

Thanks for that @1984Winston really appreciate your take as someone married to a twin. I have dated a non identical twin before but couldn't picture the scenario where it is identical twins. I totally get they are different people with different personalities.

I have wondered that too as I've heard there is already a series 3 in the pipeline so as the writer you would think it is all mapped out from the start. I definitely think series 1 was written knowing there would be series 2.

Sad they have got rid of Finch and Evans and I couldn't gel with the 2 newcomers but perhaps they will grow on me. Ziegler referring to Cole as a Evans was perhaps a nod to the old partnership that is missing.

But thoroughly enjoyable tonight. It was like an old friend popping round and despite not seeing them for ages you just carry on right where you left off.

So, Carter is secretly investigating the Sinclair files despite officially being told by Shaw in front of John that noone should be investigating. Is Carter working undercover for someone else or his own purposes? He was James's new partner so was he put with James as part of his undercover work or is this something new?

"Sad they have got rid of Finch and Evans and I couldn't gel with the 2 newcomers but perhaps they will grow on me. Ziegler referring to Cole as a Evans was perhaps a nod to the old partnership that is missing."

I'm wondering why they've replaced those two characters. It could just be that the actors weren't available through being committed elsewhere.

But - the Superintendent went into such detail about her ordering them to redeploy elsewhere, she opened a bit of a plot hole. Her reason was that she didn't want their careers affected by anything found in Holly's stolen files. But if there is anything about them in those files, why would it matter if they were no longer at that station?

So my theory is, they may come back into the show later?

Ooh - interesting idea!

This post is demonstrably not correct in relation to the plotlines. Last night's episode was further evidence of that fact.

Strong disagree! I don’t want to do spoilers - and it was slightly more ambiguous in that there were three β€œcelebs” - but pay attention to who spoke first!

Piggywaspushed · 21/08/2026 18:20

Isn't the actor who plays Evans now in The Pitt? Hence his departure.

No! Unless I’ve misremembered who spoke first with the sisters and the old lady? I’m largely infallible but I did make a mistake back in 1999 so it could potentially happen again. πŸ˜‰

That was the Theatre Royal in Windsor πŸ˜†

thank you for that, I was sure I recognised it but was then confused as it’s set in Cambridge

Just spotted this thread. I got dh to close his eyes whilst I put it on. Lovely surprise for him. Love Ludwig.

So am I the only person not enjoying this? The plots don’t hang together. I know it’s not real but there has to be some credibility or what’s the point? His solutions are ridiculous.

Just watched it. I was apprehensive, because I enjoyed the first series so much (too much!?) whilst I had a newborn and I remember it very fondly. I was worried it would become ridiculous or not pivot well and plausibly to John becoming John. I really enjoyed it, all my favourite parts are still there and we laughed a lot throughout the episode.

I think there’s something in the lines about LBI Lucy Betts Investigations. John stayed at home to take calls where there was no office or phone, Lucy mainly on sticker duty and James made up mysteries and solved them himself. Combined with all the talk about who is the baddie, and the scenes we’ve seen of him being quite mean, the allusion to him being bored of his life - did James create this all? Stealing documents, in a way that is very clever (van empty when it arrived) and putting them in a lock up isn’t giving goodie vibes.

I also miss DCI Finch and Evans, I like that the script spoke to that with John saying he really liked them. Me too! @WhereYouLeftIt i think the implication is that they’ll end up in prison if they’re associated with John/James replacement which might be in the files. There is some plausible deniability if they’ve left when James retired. They can’t have anything to do with the cover up.

@PrincessScarlett I imagine she had feelings for John but he never asked her out or made a move. Or even showed any romantic or sexual interest in her. Then James probably asked her out and now she has a lifetime of shared memories, Christmases and having and raising a child with him. I don’t think it’ll go down the β€œshe loves John really even now” route, or I hope it doesn’t. At most it will be a deep regret that John never tried with her. The relationship between Lucy and John is very interesting because they know each other so well and clearly care for each other unselfishly and perhaps unconditionally. But that’s not romantic love. She misses her husband and the father of her child.

On to the murder itself! Great one, I must be stupid because I lapped up Ludwig’s explanation until I realised the differing reactions in the sisters. All the messing about with the chair really had me buying into it. I was waiting for the other sister to react the same way. DH said that was dangerous because it was almost calling the audience stupid, but we love Ludwig so much and lap up what he says. So clever for him to deduce set up a situation that will reveal the solution, when he can’t deduce the solution directly. Yes loved the Solomon theme throughout @RomanMum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JudgementofSolomon that should have been a clue! We went through the episode thinking both did it, and then I was convinced it was neither and a third party would be brought in.

Joanne Kemper is interesting. Cover-up about her dad? Ronan Ziegler seems honourable to me. Excited to see what the last line in this week’s episode is about.

Will be watching this weekly @Blondeshavemorefun and look forward to enjoying the tv pace chat with everyone! DH is also complying though he’s definitely binge if we weren’t Blondes followers.

What was everyone’s favourite standalone murder mystery from the first series? Keep the chat going until next Thursday!

Episode 1: the office stabbing
Epsiode 2: the grand home murder
Episode 3: Cambridge tour guide murder
Episode 4: construction site accident
Episode 5: teacher murder
Episode 6: Holly murder

I found the episode 6 Holly murder solution a bit unbelievable, the timing wasn’t pre-meditated and Adam doesn’t seem clever enough to swap knives in the moment, so I guess I was primed for believing a chair swing onto a blade accident!

Thank you. I’d worked out that it wasn’t the Festival Theatre in Cambridge (which is a similar shape, but smaller) nor the Theatre Royal down the road in Bury St Edmunds (similar), so I was lost.

declutteringonedayatatime · 21/08/2026 23:56

I thought the Cambridge Tour Guide episode was great. It had the Reverend from This Country in it.
